Most older people do not develop mental health problems, but a significant minority have dementia or experience problems such as depression.

Introduction

It is estimated that 18% of the general population in the UK are of pensionable age and that this figure will grow to 20% by 2025. As a society, we tend to assume that older people will develop mental health problems as a ‘normal’ aspect of ageing. Most older people do not develop mental health problems, although a significant minority does. For example:

about 25% of people over 85 have dementia.
between 10-15% of people over 65 have depression
between 4-23% of older adults seen by medical staff have an alcohol problem.

In addition to those older people who have an identifiable mental illness such as dementia, there are many who experience psychological or emotional distress associated with isolation, loneliness or loss. These problems are not recorded by the health or medical care system.

What problems affect people in later life?

Dementia

Dementia is a decline in mental ability which affects memory, thinking, problem solving, concentration, perception and behaviour. Some forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, are degenerative. That is, they get worse over time. Other forms of dementia, such as vascular dementia, may be non-degenerative. That is, they may not get worse over time.

People with dementia can become confused. Some people also become restless or display repetitive behaviour. They may also seem irritable, tearful or agitated. This can be very distressing for both the person with dementia and their family and friends. Some people with dementia also develop other problems such as depression, disturbed sleep, aggression, inappropriate sexual behaviour and incontinence, although the latter issues tend to be associated with more advanced dementia.

About one in 20 people over the age of 65 are affected by dementia and this figure rises to one in four people over the age of 85 (Audit Commission, 2000). People under the age of 65 can develop dementia but this is rare and is known as early onset or pre-senile dementia.

What causes dementia?

Dementia occurs as a result of the death of brain cells or damage in parts of the brain that deal with our thought processes and functioning. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. We do not know what causes Alzheimer’s disease but we do know that ageing is the biggest risk factor. The second most common type of dementia is vascular or multi-infarct dementia. This occurs as a result of a series of mini-strokes which constrict blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

Can dementia be prevented and is there a cure?

Most types of dementia cannot be cured but a number of psychological treatments and anti-dementia drugs can be very effective for those in the early stages of dementia. It is therefore very important to get a proper assessment of cognitive function from a medical practitioner as early as possible.

There are no guaranteed ways of preventing dementia, but you may find it helpful to follow a sensible diet and pursue a healthy lifestyle. Regular physical exercise and supplements like Gingko Biloba can help to ensure that there is always a good supply of blood to the brain. Please consult your GP before taking such medication. You can also help yourself by keeping your mind active, for example by doing crosswords or puzzles.

Depression

Depression describes a range of moods, from feeling a bit low to a severe problem, which interferes with everyday life and normal functioning. People with severe depression may experience a range of symptoms including low mood, loss of interest and pleasure as well as feelings of worthlessness or guilt.

Depression can affect anyone, of any culture, age or background but it affects proportionally more older people than any other age group. It is estimated that around 10-15% of elderly people in the community exhibit depressive symptoms, with this proportion rising to about 40% of care home residents. That said, you will not necessarily become depressed just because you are getting older.

What causes depression?

There are a number of risk factors that play a role in increasing older people’s vulnerability to depression including:

being widowed, divorced or retired
neurobiological changes associated with ageing
use of medication for other conditions
greater physical impairment and disease
loneliness and isolation
genetic susceptibility, which increases with age.

Can depression be prevented and is there a cure?

Depression in later life is a widely under recognised and under treated medical condition. Up until recently many health professionals – including GP’s – failed to offer the treatments and supports available to other age groups. Most forms of depression can be treated, using medication, talking treatments or other strategies.

It is can be difficult to diagnose depression in older people because it often occurs alongside other mental and physical illnesses, such as dementia, stroke, diabetes and cancer. In addition many older people do not seek help from their GP until they have a number of symptoms. As with dementia, it is important to seek help as early as possible.

Self-help strategies that can help reduce the risk of depression include:

taking regular exercise
planning for critical transitions such as retirement
seeking support from family and friends following the loss of a long-term partner
ensuring that you pursue a range of interests in later life.

Dementia and depression

The relationship between dementia and depression is complex. The symptoms of dementia and depression – including withdrawal from social activities and general apathy – are very similar. An elderly person with severe depression may occasionally be misdiagnosed as having dementia. A person with dementia may also become depressed.

Alcohol abuse

It is estimated that between 4%-23% of older adults seen by medical staff experience problems with alcohol. Figures also show that older men are currently between two and six times more likely than older women to be at risk of abusing alcohol.

Although alcohol abuse is a problem for people of all ages, it is more likely to go unrecognised among older people. Many older people use alcohol to deal with loss or loneliness. Approximately 10-30% of older people who abuse alcohol become depressed. They are also at greater risk of suicide.

Medication

Prescribed medications can cause mental health difficulties among older people. A 2001 Department of Health survey found that 79% of older people take prescribed medicines. Many older people take four or more medications at the same time. There are risks associated with taking multiple medications, including confusion.

More detailed information about medication and mental health problems can be found at the following sites:

Other mental health problems

There are a number of rarer mental health problems that affect older people, including delirium, anxiety and late-onset schizophrenia. The prevalence, nature, and course of these disorders are different in older people, as are the treatments that may be offered.

Capacity and older people with mental illness

People with dementia or severe mental illness may have difficulty in making and communicating decisions. Very few people are unable to be involved in making choices at all but some may have partial or fluctuating mental capacity and may need help with c
ommunication. Different approaches are also required to engage a person with dementia. They often need longer to make decisions, may need an advocate to speak on their behalf and their mental functioning may also vary by day, and time of day. Family members or carers are often useful sources of information but it is important to take account of the views of the person with dementia alongside those of their carer.

Help for carers

Caring for an older person with mental health problems can be very stressful, time consuming and emotionally and physically challenging. Caring for an older person with dementia is associated with higher levels of stress, with a third of carers suffering from depression.

Many people feel that health insurance is a misuse of money. These people are often quite healthy and have no need to see their physician beyond yearly check-ups while some others are not aware about affordable health insurance life. However, health insurance is extremely important because it not only offers you protection from harmful illnesses or diseases and creates a better quality of life, but it can also protect you from financial devastation in the case of an emergency.

Having a middle class background or being fraught with many responsibilities in life can be a financial downside to say the least. Or it may happen that you may be dependent on someone else to cover your daily expenses such as a place to live and food to eat. Health insurance is something that everyone needs and not enough people have it because of these other financial burdens. Any emergency such as a car accident or broken bone will require adequate medical assistance. What do you do when you don’t have insurance and can’t afford expensive medical bills?

One of the most serious reasons for having health insurance is to cover the expenses of medical bills – urgent situation or non-emergency. Without health insurance, you may be tempted not to see a doctor about medical issues you have, or you may assume that they are not serious. Both of these options are harmful and unwise as medical issues will often progress and worsen over time.

If you find yourself financially helpless at any time in your life, you are probably without health insurance. This can be a nightmare whether you have a family or not because medical expenses can put you into debt quickly. Luckily, there are ways of finding affordable coverage providers that can keep your health, as well as your finances, safe. A simple visit to the doctor can cost you significantly more money than it would with insurance.

With so many health insurance plans and restrictions out there, it can be difficult finding the best health insurance for you. However, this process is quite possible to do with a little research. There are a few items to look for when deciding on health insurance plans, and by considering them all you can make a good decision for yourself and your family about health insurance. These include coverage like physician visits and fees and hospital expenses such as room and board in case you are kept overnight or longer for observation or treatment. Lastly, consider price. After researching different coverage plans or international health insurance plan and physician requirements, compare deductibles and monthly premiums to find the best deal. Often, you can get group rates through your employer, or you may find that artist organizations (for freelance artists) offer health care plans. By researching price, as well as other health insurance options, you can make the best choices for your family.

Let’s face it: finding gift ideas for men can be tough. Valentine’s Day, you’re thinking chocolates or his favorite beverage. His birthday, a cake of course, and – a tie? Gets old, seems kinda lame. A movie, a concert? Nice, but… Why not really surprise him? You take good care of your skin. Why not help your favorite guy do the same with a gift of men’s skin care products, or maybe even a cosmetic dermatology treatment?

Men are catching on to the idea that it’s a part of good grooming to take care of their skin. Maybe you’ve seen a bottle or tube of “product” lurking around the bathroom! But, you should know that men’s skin is different from women’s, and that means extra attention when choosing men’s skin care products.

On average, a man’s skin is about 25% thicker than a women’s, and twice as oily. His skin oil is denser and more complex, due to the presence of testosterone. This means cleansing is key – and proper cleansing agents are really important to remove impurities. Here’s the paradox. Even though it’s thicker, male skin tends to be more sensitive, because it generally undergoes a daily exfoliation process: shaving. Shaving reduces the skin’s natural layer of protection, increasing its fragility and producing dryness. Harsh bar soaps and alcohol-based colognes and aftershaves are just too drying.

Here’s where contacting a cosmetic dermatologist really makes sense. Choosing medical grade skin care products does more than just ensure efficacy. The delivery system of these products allows for deeper penetration of the active ingredients into damaged skin. Ask for cleansers and moisturizers designed for male skin, including those with vitamin C and other nutrients.

Dry skin from shaving can be further impacted by bathing. As many women know well, the daily run or workouts at the gym can lead to frequent showering, sometimes more than once a day. This can leave skin dried out! So, give your guy some advice along with your gift – warm (not hot) showers; no harsh soaps, just wash where you really need it, then pat dry. And then, he’ll be ready to moisturize with the skin care product you’ve selected.

Men with outdoor jobs or active lifestyles often suffer from the environmental damage of sun and wind exposure. This brings on premature aging of the skin, with an increased statistical risk of skin cancer. The most common areas for men to develop skin cancer are on the back, shoulders, scalp, neck, ears and face – all maximal sun exposure areas. It’s a fact that, on average, men do not notice suspicious skin growths as early as women, nor do they seek treatment as quickly.

And, as I’m the first to admit, the male psyche sometimes prefers not to concern itself with risks like ultraviolet radiation – so men may be less likely to guard their skin with sunscreen, protective clothing, and hats. If this sounds like your sweetie, then a high-quality moisturizing sunscreen, some gentle (loving) nagging and a really cool hat could make the perfect birthday or Father’s Day gift!

If you want to pull out all the stops, give your man a skin care treatment. Your choices range on up to microdermabrasion or laser treatments. But, to start simply, a facial massage and treatment makes a great gift. Look for a cosmetic dermatologist who uses essential oils with fruit, plant and marine extracts. Performed correctly, a facial increases the flow of blood and lymph to purify and energize the skin cells. He’ll feel pampered, relaxed and refreshed – what a stress-reliever!

So if you’re stuck with that same old “What to give that guy” theme – well, men’s skin care products are a unique way to say “I care.”

This simple, yet effective formula is excellent at transforming the old and worn out aspects of your life into a brand new and beautiful life. Are you tired of going in circles and failing to meet your goals one foot before the finish live? You are not alone. It has been my experience that many of my clients quit only a few minutes before the miracle occurs and when you can bring awareness to this aspect of yourself and in following this simple three step process, your dreams really can come true.

Step One: Develop a beautiful mind.

A beautiful mind is your key to a beautiful soul and your soul is strong enough, bold enough and wise enough to always guide you to the finish line. In developing a beautiful mind you can do several things:

– Meditate – any form will do!

– Heal past traumas with theta healing techniques and /or EMDR (Eye Movement Desentization Reprocessing).

– Study and follow the Law of Attraction.

– Reprogram your thoughts with positive affirmations.

– Become your ego’s best friend – love him/her unconditionally.

– Set clear intentions.

– Look for the beauty in your life and be grateful for all that is you and your mind.

Embrace the power of your mind. As you replace outmoded thoughts with new, empowering ones you will be able to tap into the genius in you. Healing your emotions will serve to keep your thoughts and emotions balanced and they will work together, for you rather than against you.

Step Two: Honour Your Beautiful Body

Having a beautiful body does not mean that you have to be a size 4, 6 or even an 8 or 10, beautiful bodies come in all shapes and sizes. Along with a healthy love and respect for the body you do have, you can also do the following to honour it:

– Continue to heal negative and gear based emotions through theta healing techniques and EMDR. When our emotions intertwine with our thoughts we create disease in the body.

– Choose one or two physical activities and do them 3 to 4 times per week.

– Strengthen your core body – you will be amazed at how good this feels.

– Eat healthy, according to your blood type.

– Take anti=oxidants.

– Dance like no on is watching.

– Dress in fashions that accentuate the beauty of your particular body type.

– Take care of your skin with good skin care products.

– Protect yourself from sun damage with sun block.

All these combined will strengthen and revitalize your physical being. Your body is the house to your spirit – maintain it as you would your home. Love it as the ideal sanctuary for your spirit that it was intended to be.

Step Three: Our spirits are simply awaiting our permission to express themselves.

You will know what form of expression that is meant to be for you by the passion and commitment that you feel when you do it. To help you further clarify your spirit’s expression you can do the following:

– Pay attention to what ‘moves’ you – what brings joy and fulfillment that you can do for hours on end without realizing the time has passed.

– Think back to all the things that your friends and family have noticed about you and compliment you on frequently. Sometimes we don’t give ourselves credit for our unique gifts and talents. They are often reflected in others as a way for the universe to bring our attention to them.

– Give yourself permission to express your talents passionately, regardless of any objections or obstacles that appear to test you. They are only tests as to your real commitment for manifesting your heart’s desires and honouring your spirit in the process.

– Let go of the need of having to know how to do it; when you are clear on the ‘what’ of your spirit, the how will reveal itself , one step at a time.

– Let go of the need to do it perfectly. There is no room for perfection on the road to excellence!

– Develop an expansive mind-set. Make room for miracles and step into your light and shine, without apology.

All three steps in this formula, when done with an open mind and a loving heart can be the catalyst for you transforming your life, however good, or unsatisfactory, as the case may be – into an exciting, rewarding and holy adventure.

Healthy Living is the number one goal among North Americans. However, 80% of the population do not know that cooking healthy, eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, and making healthy choices can mean the difference between life and death. I have written this health and fitness article so that people can make healthy choices for their own personal health care and well being.

Here are 25 ways to eat and drink healthy:

1. Do not drink iced water, especially not with meals. This interferes with flow of your digestive juices and impairs digestion.

2. Drink a cup of fresh pure water, at room temperature, the first thing in the morning and last thing at night. You should drink it hot only when you are constipated. In that case, a little lime or lemon may be added.

3. Drink six to eight glasses of water every day, approximately one glass for every fourteen pounds of your body weight. Drink mineral water to be on safe side.

4. Do not drink water with your meals, but drink it half hour before or two to three hours after your meals so as not to disturb the process of your digestion by diluting the digestive juices.

5. Sip the water slowly, never swig it down at once.

6. In order to restore life elements of the water lost in boiling or processing, pass it through the air, pouring it from one cup to another. You will soon notice that this gives a slightly invigorating and stimulating effect, which is absent in dead and devitalized water.

7. It is better that you eat fresh fruits and vegetables than to drink fruit or vegetable juices.

8. Do not keep juices standing, as they will lose their precious enzymes. Apple juice for instance loses one third of them after 30 minutes and all of them after two hours.

9. Coffee, tea, alcohol and chocolate are not recommended because tannic acid, theine, caffeine and theobromine are stimulants.

10. Milk is really a food, not a drink. You should have it in small sips. Otherwise, it will likely produce indigestion.

11. It is not the amount of food you consume that nourishes your body, but only the amount the body itself can assimilate.

12. Choose carefully the foods that fit your system, choose them just as carefully as you choose a shirt, a hat or a tie. You have to try different food combinations until you figure out which health food suit you best. Make health choices such as steam fresh vegetables.

13. Avoid all devitalized foods like canned food, polished rice, white flour and white sugar. Use unpolished rice, whole wheat flour and brown sugar or honey.

14. Another healthy choice is to chew your food carefully and slowly, especially if it is the starchy kind, so that it may be properly mixed with saliva, otherwise starch will be waiting for digestion for several hours.

15. Toasted bread is better than fresh. Do not eat it with liquid. Drink before eating the bread, as starch should be converted into glucose by saliva.

16. Eat only one starch to a meal. For instance, if you have rice then omit potatoes, bread, macaroni starchy pudding and so on.

17. If you suffer from gas, it is advisable to plan your meals so that you do not eat protein and starch together; and especially not with cooked sulphur foods like green peas, cabbage, broccoli, eggs, turnips, and so on because gas is produced by sulphur working on the starch.

18. Do not throw away the water in which vegetables have been boiled but use it for gravies, soup or for drinking. Potato water is excellent as it alkalizes the body.

19. Fried greasy foods as well as rich dishes should be avoided altogether, because these digest more slowly than fat itself. Fat is the last to leave your stomach, carbohydrates is first and then proteins.

20. All saturated fats, such as lard, butter, margarine, eggs, and dairy products will increase the blood cholesterol level and can be classified as unessential fats.

21. Any diet which is high in saturated fat is dangerous. So you should eat a balanced meal, a high fat and low protein diet inhibits the function of enzymes.

22. Remember, it is not only the calories and amount of fat that decide the nutrition and health, but the quality of fat. Bacon, for instance has caloric fat value only. It contains nothing else, neither vitamins, nor minerals.

23. Six cups of fresh raw cabbage juice a day keep peptic ulcers away.

24. The richest source of protein is soya bean. Two pounds of soya been flour contain as much protein as five pounds of cheese, five pounds of boneless meat or six dozen eggs or 10 liters of milk. Soya bean is the only non-acid forming protein.

25. The most essential rule about food, however, has nothing to do with quality, quantity or preparation, but with your mental attitude at the time you are eating it.

Staying healthy is extremely important in this modern world. However, many people find that despite their best efforts they just cannot stay as fit as they should be. Many people dream of change in their bodies, though the best way to do this is simply to learn more about health and about the human body. Health education is extremely important, and an often overlooked factor when it comes to maintaining optimum levels of fitness.

Whilst many people are interested in staying healthy, recent surveys have suggested the American population are actually extremely unaware of what it really takes to keep us healthy. This could be due to the fact that not enough information is available on health, or it could be down to the fact that people just don’t know how to interpret the information that is there. Many modern illnesses are a result of stress, of our diet, of our environment, and most importantly of our attitude. There are many unhealthy behaviors which we need to try change order to stay healthy. The only way we can do this is to learn exactly what is healthy and what is detrimental to a whole.

Health education is not something that will come to us, it is something that we have to actively seek. Many of us are connected through the Internet to a vast amount of information at our fingertips (this includes a over its 60% of the population of America). However, whilst there are hundreds of websites detailing information on health and the human body, many people are not actively seeking out this information. These sites or just not for medical students, they’re for anyone who is willing to learn about the health of their bodies. For example there are images, videos, articles, and the regularly updated blogs detailing many, many ways in which to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Health comes from many different sources. We should learn about what is a healthy diet in order to keep our bodies healthy, but we should also combine this with creating an exercise regimen that works for us as an individual and learning about possible risks. Understanding cardiac physiology it helps us to understand about the heart, and therefore about the blood that shows throughout our bodies. Heart problems are one of the most common killers in today’s society, so this is just one way in which you learn about health in order to prevent problems in later life.

Health education is not difficult. You can either choose to read about the specific health problems, or you can learn about human health in general. Whether your family has a history of illness, or you are just interested to know how you can prevent yourself from getting one, the information is all there at your fingertips if you choose to look for it. Staying healthy does not have to be difficult, and health education is just part of a process by which we can incorporate health into everyday lives. Our body is complex, but learning about how to look after it is not.

When a heart surgeon who has seen the insides of 5,000 people’s arteries has a “change of heart” it’s definitely something to take note of!

Especially if you want to protect your health, and the health of the ones you care for. The doctor, Dwight Lundell, actually caught onto something that, in hind-sight is pretty obvious. However, with his medical expertise, he was able to not only shed more light on the topic, but also figure out the all-important WHY of the matter.

The problem is, it seems to fly in the face of a lot of “common medical knowledge” and goes against all sorts of rhetoric the public has been hearing for years. The topic is heart disease, cholesterol, and heart-attacks. Heart disease is the #1 killer of people in the USA today, and it’s likely to keep its top spot so long as no one changes their diet. Pharmaceutical companies would love the answer to be ‘cut cholesterol’. But, what if cholesterol build up on artery walls was only a SIDE EFFECT of something else going on in the body?

To study this further, you need to understand inflammation. Inflammation is a body’s natural reaction to some harmful substance. A bee-sting will certainly cause inflammation of the surrounding tissue, until the poison and histamines are removed from the area. Inflammation can be good—if only continued for short periods of time. The problem occurs when certain parts of the body are frequently, or constantly inflamed. Then, instead of being beneficial, the inflammation turns to harm…and can even be deadly.

In the case of the cholesterol side-effect, it’s the arteries of the body that are under attack from frequent inflammation. Cholesterol is used by the body to coat the arteries and protect them from inflammation. The problem is, this restricts blood flow and can cause dangerous pieces of this coating to break off and cause any number of maladies. This is what people today see: cholesterol as the enemy, building up to ‘attack’ people in various ways.

The root however, lies deeper.
What if you could stop cholesterol from building up? Sure, you could take expensive medicines, but wouldn’t it be better to fight back at the core cause:  inflammation?

You are what you eat:
This is a fairly simple illustration, and perhaps that’s why it’s often overlooked. With the abundance of unsaturated fats, vegetable oils, low-fat foods, diets, low-carb alternatives, artificial sweeteners, 0-calorie (non-water) drinks, pills, prescriptions, and any number of countless other “health foods” is obesity and heart disease actually on the RISE?

No one can answer that question. If all that stuff really was as good for you as it was said, then everyone today should be super fit. Heart disease should be on its way into the history books, not at the head of the charts. The answer isn’t “Oh, people are being bad and skipping all that sort of thing”. Can 60% of Americans be that far off base? (60% of Americans are considered over weight today, in 2009) It’s very hard to believe that this many people could be so enamored of doing the wrong thing so consistently.

What’s the real problem?
These low-carb, artificially sweetened, omega-6 oil rich foods are actually the culprit in causing inflammation in the arteries. The main enemies are simple carbohydrates found in processed foods (these turn to sugars very quickly) , refined sugar, and omega 6 oils (oils that when out of balance produce cytokines, the inflammatory molecules).

“What does all this have to do with inflammation?   Blood sugar is controlled in a very narrow range.   Extra sugar molecules attach to a variety of proteins that in turn injure the blood vessel wall.  This repeated injury to the blood vessel wall sets off inflammation.  When you spike your blood sugar level several times a day, every day, it is exactly like taking sandpaper to the inside of your delicate blood vessels. “

While refined sugar and simple starches may be a bit easier to avoid, what about the omega 6 oil? Your body DOES need some of it for healthy function, but it must be balanced with the healthy omega-3 oil. The ideal ratio is more omega 3 than 6. However, with saturated fats, animal fats, and other sources of omega 3 being labeled as “fattening” or “less healthy” the balance has been thrown off. Omega 6 fat also gives foods a longer shelf-life which is best for the bottom line—not you!

The truth is, while omega-6 may look attractive on the surface (such as soy oil, sunflower oil, corn oil) due to slower spoilage and being ‘unsaturated’, they’re actually behind a lot of the inflammation that’s keeping people at risk and over-weight!

“Animal fats contain less than 20% omega-6 and are much less likely to cause inflammation than the supposedly healthy oils labeled polyunsaturated.  Forget the “science” that has been drummed into your head for decades.  The science that saturated fat alone causes heart disease is non-existent.  The science that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol is also very weak.  Since we now know that cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, the concern about saturated fat is even more absurd today.”

So what’s the good news in all of this?
It’s not too late! Chances are, if you are reading this article, you CAN reverse the damage to your artery walls. And you can also prevent more inflammation from occurring in the future. When you cut out inflammation, you also stop the body’s need to plaster the artery walls with potentially harmful cholesterol. There are also many delicious solutions, and great reasons to raise omega-3 levels.

Omega-3 may actually play a part in weight loss success! Jade Beutler an author of Understanding Fats & Oils says “Omega 3 fatty acids are gaining popularity with those looking to lose weight while attaining optimal health and the latest research has revealed numerous slimming secrets attributed to Omega-3s”. USA Weekend magazine also reports on a study where overweight dieters who included omega 3s in their eating plan lost 2 more pounds monthly than the control group, who did not.

First, eat greener:
Try to add more unprocessed foods to your diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables may have carbohydrates, but they are mostly complex-carbohydrates. Even in the sweetest fruits, these are broken down more slowly and blood sugar isn’t so heavily affected. Stay away or minimize starchy foods like white potatoes and white breads. The healthiest food is the food that’s closest to its natural state. Grass fed beef, free-range chicken/turkey, colorful fruits, squash, vegetables, nuts and seeds are the key to stopping inflammation so your natural healing process can take over.

Want to help balance your omega-3 and omega 6?
As you may know, fish and fish oil are rich in healthy omega-3 oils. But what if you don’t want fish every night? Don’t like the idea of cod-liver-oil? Worried about fish absorbing harmful pollutants and spreading them to your family? Or maybe, you want to follow the vegetarian path so that the oceans can recover from over-fishing. No matter what your reason, Omega-3 just got a lot healthier and easier to add to your diet!

Enter, the Chia Seed
This tiny seed is nature’s richest plant-based source of omega-3 oil. By weight, it is even richer than salmon, so every spoon full of chia can help you tip the balance to the healthy omega-3 side. The best part is, there’s no flavor. You can add these see
ds to whatever you like (unlike fish!) to get your daily amount of omega-3. They’re also full of b-vitamins, more calcium than milk, and more magnesium than broccoli…all with the taste of whatever you’d like!

“Food of convenience” is part of the reason for this obesity and cholesterol epidemic. Easier, faster, tastier, and longer-lasting has been the motto. Chia Seeds may be the ultimate convenient food. What is easier than sprinkling a spoonful onto something you were going to eat or drink anyway? What is more delicious than the best taste that YOU specify? And what natural, uncooked, preservative & pesticide free food lasts 2 years without refrigeration? Nothing else but ‘the chia seed’ can answer yes to all these questions.

As we all know, a company’s receivables count for approximately 40-50% of their actual assets. With the economy in chaos we need to revise the rules of the game. Or at least start the game over and play by the rules! Face it friends, businesses are sinking, and if you wish to stay afloat, you must safeguard your “life jacket”. In this day, age, and market, our life jackets ARE our receivables. Let’s talk about how this differs from previous years though. It USED to be that we needed to ensure that potential clients that we bring in and extend credit to were financially “healthy”. We would insist that we had credit applications, personal guarantee’s signed, received business credit analysis reports on ALL new clients BEFORE extending credit terms to them. We would set terms and conditions and didn’t look back UNTIL there was a red flag signal. Today we still must ensure that we do all of this pre emptive research before we extend credit terms and conditions to possible new clients HOWEVER we also must make sure that our clients ( even long term customers) receive their daily financial checkups!

For instance, when a baby is first born, they are checked out thoroughly by the Doctor before they leave the hospital. Once they receive a clean bill of health, they are sent home to begin their new life with their family. Yet there are many checkups along the way. Several the first year and then as the child grows, although they are seen less, they still receive annual physicals. We should treat our clients with the same care. In the beginning of a new relationship, after credit is extended, we should monitor their habits closely in the beginning but we should also ensure that we “check up” on our clients as the relationship matures. In my business, you constantly receive calls from clients that say, “They have been our clients for 15 years…they started getting behind I simply blamed the economy, I never would have thought they would buy from me in November and file Chapter 11 in December”. I have heard that constantly this month. So HOW can we ensure that our receivables are “healthy”?

First ensure that your Front Line work is Clear and Complete ….

• Have EVERY new potential client complete and sign credit applications. These credit applications should not only give you the necessary information to “check” their financial health but it should also outline your credit terms and conditions in detail. Add a clause that states if accounts are past due by 30/45 (your preference) days there will be an interest charge. Explain that the client will be held responsible for any and all legal or collection fees if the debt exceeds credit terms. Make sure that you secure your rights in the very beginning, because once terms are giving, it is hard to change them (or get an additional signature down the road). Also, in the credit application process, ask identifying questions, such as how much product do you expect to purchase on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis? Do you expect your purchases to grow as time passes? Give them additional space to explain their answers. This allows you to also see what the client will expect of you along the way. It can also be used when determining credit terms. We will address this shortly.

• Although it used to be extremely difficult to have new clients sign personal guarantees, most understand this request in our “rocky” economy. I have suggested to many clients to simply add the PG statement at the bottom of the credit application. This seems to work best then giving a separate form for the potential client to complete.

• Of course having a client complete a credit application is only ¼ of the work. YOU MUST FOLLOW THROUGH! Make sure that every single reference is called. KNOW what questions to ask! Then take the extra steps. If you do not have access to credit business reports, you can still check online with the secretary of state in their licensing state to ensure they are active and check for any recent judgments or liens. Google them. Take those few extra steps to give your receivables “peace of mind”.

Now we need to work on slowly “training” our clients moving forward…..

• Once you establish their financial health…take things slow. Allow your client to earn your trust through a quarterly reviewed credit line. This will give them something to work toward and protect you along the way. You would be surprised how many of my clients simply extended new clients a full credit line of up to $100,000.00, the new client placed two orders, never paid and disappeared. In these cases, we implemented a new process. This may work for some, and not others, if you have particular challenges, call me and we can discuss at no cost!!! The process they began (and has been working quite well) begins with the credit application process, where they asked those predictive purchasing questions. They utilized this information and offered 50% credit terms (based on average predicted order cost) for the first 6 months. This means the client would pay 50% upfront COD and were extended the remaining 50% on credit with either net 15 or net 30 terms. Additional orders are not accepted until the balance is paid in full for the first 6 months. Then at the end of their 6 month term, there is a review. Were payments made on time? Were orders consistent? Were there any invalid dispute claims? Take all of this information into consideration before moving forward with a 75% credit line the second half of the year. And the process continues and is revisited upon their one year anniversary. This process has worked well for many clients in not only safe guarding their receivables but earning the respect and trust of their clients. It also gives you time to “get to know” your clients. If they order 100 crates for 9 months and suddenly order 1000 crates…..that is a red flag. If the first six months they pay by net 30 and suddenly they are late the following two months, this may be a red flag. Taking the time to learn your clients’ habits is important because the slightest change, in this economy, could be trouble.

• Last but certainly not least, just as a child needs structure and boundaries to mature and thrive, so do clients! When boundaries are set and then broken, there must be consequences. Although there is the occasional exception to the rule (if client has a valid dispute, if they request payment arrangements ONCE and follow through, if there was an error on your part) but the occasional exception should not be the norm. If your clients know that at 35 days past due there will be a hold placed on their credit, at 55 days there will be a final demand notice offering them a “last payment option” to avoid collections, and as 65 days they will be sitting in the collectors office (so to speak) they will ensure that YOU are their priority! If your clients know what to expect (as you should outline in the beginning as a part of your credit application), then you will only earn their respect through the process. If your clients see that you waiver many of your policies, they will utilize you as a second bank. This is not healthy for either of you. So you must have a WRITTEN Receivables POLICY in place and ensure that everyone involved with your company follows this structure. Keep in mind that your sales department should also be aware of these guidelines, and not make false promises or speak of your policy as if “anything really goes”. If everyone in your organization is united regarding receivables, it will only strengthen your company’s bottom line as a whole!

So the rules may not be changing, as much as we have to adapt to actually live by them. These are all basic Accounting 101 procedures, however for so long we have been complacent and so concerned about our clients that we have lost sight of our own bottom lines. We must restructure, reinvent, and reinforce our A/R process if we wish to survive and thrive in the years to come.

The heart is a muscle and like any other muscle in order for it to be strong it has to be developed. The heart is the most important muscle in the body as it circulates the blood and is basically the life source of the body.

The first step we must do to change our bad and unhealthy habits to good and healthy ones is to associate pain with the bad habit, and pleasure with the good one.

This is the main reason why most people find it difficult not to over eat. For you to avoid these hunger tendencies, you need to eat high quality foods.

The higher the level of your HDL, the lower your LDL will get. Exercise also strengthens the most important muscle in the body, which is the heart. As it gets stronger it will be able to pump more blood.

Whenever you would buy canned or packaged food make sure that you go through the amount of fat content it has. Sometimes the label says fat-free on many items but this does not mean they are a hundred percent fat-free.

When you exercise, you increase your cardiovascular health, and your heart begins to work better. Exercise can be had anywhere, anytime, simply walk instead of drive your car.

The flavonoids in Lipton tea are antioxidants, which protect the cells from free radicals. Just one cup of black or green tea a day has around 200 mg of flavonoids which help strengthen the immune system.

With research you will find all the information you ever need to know to manage your condition better.

People who eat 500 calories worth of peanuts daily eat less at mealtime. Additionally, their metabolic rates measure eleven percent faster. As an added bonus, peanuts also provide benefits to the immune system. Other great nut choices are walnuts, which contain cancer-fighting omega-3 fatty acids and pecans.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, there is no better time like now to start a healthy habit and have a bette awareness of your cholesterol. There are a variety of natural nutritionals to help lower your cholesterol prior to being placed on the prescription medications.

You should change your life style to prevent heart disease. That means exercise, eating more fish than meat, eating fruits and vegetables and nuts and grains.

Almonds have the ability to sustain your energy and restore your health and vitality daily.

These are factors such as the history of your parents or any other close family member who had cardiovascular diseases that should tell you whether you are at risk. Diseases of the heart tend to arise and worsen with age.

The Cholesterol is a lipidic, waxy steroid that can be found in the cell membranes and transported in the blood plasma of all animals.

This super fruit supplement can be an easy way to go above and beyond your recommended daily intake of your average fruits and vegetables.

With any healthy lifestyle changes you are making, be sure to set small goals and celebrate as you reach them. That can be a motivation in itself!

I love those self help books which tell you how to easily remove stains and odours, be more efficient and various other useful tips, just by using some common sense and normal household cleaning products, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

Do you know that practically all cleaning can be done efficiently and quickly using these two amazing, totally safe and non-toxic ordinary household items?

I’m not going into this here, because this article is all about using some really common homeopathic remedies at home. But I encourage you to check them out. Just imagine, no more toxic fumes or dangers for small children or pets. Or you, for that matter.

Back to home remedies.

Just imagine your small daughter falls and cuts herself badly. She’s screaming, you’re panicking and you’ve got a flat tyre on your car. Your neighbours are away on holiday on one side, and at work on the other. The bus drivers are on strike. Your family live miles away. And you’re a single parent.

Well, you could panic some more.

Or you could ring for a taxi, which will probably take a while to come.

You might try ringing your friend, but she could be out of town. Or, at the very least, a few minutes drive away.

You drive to the local hospital.

And then you wait…

Don’t you just love the wait?

You could be dying, for all most hospitals seem to care. They seem to be more interested in your private insurance cover, or your next of kin – great feeling of confidence.

Now supposing you had a small kit of common homeopathic home remedies, with an instruction sheet.

You could quickly get that out, run through the ailments section and pick the appropriate remedy for the wound.

That might take a couple of minutes.

Almost like magic, your daughter stops screaming. With peace descending, you wash and dress the wound. By the time your friend or the taxi arrives, the worst is over. Your daughter wants to get back to playing.

You’re left wondering why you were in such a panic. But you know it was real. There’s a wound to prove it.

Homeopathic home remedies work so fast, as soon as they hit your tongue they’re working, provided you have selected the correct one.

Learning something new, like using the most appropriate home remedies in emergencies, is something so valuable for us all, if should be taken very seriously.

So, where do you look for help?

My suggestion is to find a good, regular (at least weekly) natural health or homeopathic ezine (internet magazine) to subscribe to. This way, learning becomes almost effortless. Learning which common home remedies do what, could stand you in good stead later in life.

How to get in to a positive frame of mind.

Life is not all plain sailing. Indeed, hardship, trials and tribulations are part of parcel of being. Encountering difficulty is not a bad thing –what matters is the way we deal with it. A positive frame of mind is important for so many reasons. Positive thinking is proven to enhance performance in productivity and quality. We tend to think more and actively and perform better when we are feeling positive and well.

There are biological explanations of this. A positive frame of mind is due to enhanced levels of neuro transmitters like serotonin that regulate the performance capabilities of the brain. The knock effects of a positive frame of mind also include better health – not just better mental health but better in the physical sense. This is due to the boost to the immune system that a positive frame of mind can give you from positive hormones .

The reverse is also true, when we are depressed we are far more liable to contracting other diseases and mental health issues. Our relationships with others deteriorate, we begin to think irrationally and our productivity can ground to a direct halt. In short this is a frame of mind that is best to avoid at all costs. Feeling unhappy from time to time is not unusual- but how we choose to deal with a problem comes from our default state of mind.

A positive mental attitude is also about giving you a can do attitude. People who think positively are far more likely to see challenges rather than problems or opportunities rather than difficulties. For instance, entrepreneurs who are successful often are because they are able to spot opportunities for growth in a market which others only see problems in. The positive mental attitude of the successful businessmen means that opportunity becomes a reality ; because they also have the drive and motivation to succeed and make their dream come true . So as you can see there is much to be gained from a positive mental attitude. The problem for a lot of people is in developing one in the first place.

It is true that some people seem to be more positive than others. Having a so called ‘ sunny disposition’ implies that there is something inherent or genetic to account for a frame of mind. While this may be true in some cases it is also true that a positive frame of mind is not an attribute for a privlleged few. It is something that is open to anybody. Anyone, that is, who is prepared to put the necessary work in to attain it.

Developing a positive frame of mind is not some new aged fad. For centuries religious men and scholars alike searched for and developed techniques to harness an inner harmony. While this may have begun to make one closer to god the essence of this idea is just as relevant today. That a positive frame of mind makes us closer to the divine while a negative frame of mind can only lead us in to ways of being that are a detriment to our lives. Monks realised this long ago which is why they devote themselves to a life of abstinence and mental and spiritual fulfilment.

One of the best ways to determine your frame of mind is to think about how you are with other people. A great way to do this is to picture how you behave towards people you do not know. Are you outgoing and open to meeting and talking with others? Or are you insular and afraid. Believe it or not one of the best ways to overcome a negative frame of mind is to change your attitude to the world around you and that means the people in it as well. If you are usually uncomfortable around others then try this experiment. One night force yourself to strike up a conversation at random in a public place. Do not be concerned about how you look or appear – or what you talk about.

A reference about the weather or anything will do. Just try it and note how you feel afterwards
You see, the way you are with others will affect the opportunities you get offered. Think about it in this way – who is the most likely to get the furthest in a workplace between two people of equal ability and experience except for one difference- One is uptight and ill at ease with others around them the other easy going comfortable in the company of others. If I was the boss of those two people I know which one I would pick for a promotion.

So really work on adopting a positive frame of mind and you will benefit big time.

For many, the worst symptom is the prolonged, throbbing, recurring pain. Migraines are thought to be caused by extreme constriction and then dilation of blood vessels in the head. Recent research suggests that migraines may result from altered levels of neurotransmitters (neurologically active chemicals) in the brain, particularly serotonin.
  • Pregnancy Health: There has never been better news for pregnancy planning! Maternal and fetal complications of pregnancy and childbirth are at an all-time low, prenatal diagnostics and interventions have continued to improve, and the “information age” has offered unprecedented access to medically related information. Contraceptive options are also multiplying and improving, so that the goal of eliminating unwanted pregnancies in the 21st century is no longer in the realm of fantasy.
