Stomach cancer is common throughout the world and affects all races, it is more common in men than women, and has its peak age range between 40 and 60 years old. Stomach cancer mortality is higher in Japan and Chile, presumably because of the different diets in those countries where they are less dependent on red meat.

Over the last 25 years the incidence of stomach cancer in the western world has decreased by 50% and the resulting death rate is less than a third of what it used to be but in less developed countries it is still a major cause of death, probably because in these countries by the time the disease is diagnosed (usually by means of a Barium meal) the stomach cancer is at a very advanced stage.

TYPES OF STOMACH CANCER

There are several different types of stomach cancer, some of which are very rare. The most common types of stomach cancer start in the glandular cells of the stomach lining (adenocarcinomas), this is where stomach acid and digestive enzymes are made, and where most stomach cancers start. When the stomach cancer becomes more advanced, it can travel through the bloodstream and spread to organs such as the liver, lungs, and bones. Stomach cancers that start in the lymphatic tissue (lymphoma), in the stomach muscular tissue (sarcoma) or in the tissues that support the organs of the digestive system (gastrointestinal stromal tumors) are less common and are treated in different ways.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Early clues to stomach cancer are chronic dyspepsia and epigastric discomfort, followed in later stages by weight loss, anorexia, a feeling of fullness after eating, anemia and fatigue. Blood in the stools may also be present and if the Cancer is in the Cardia (top) vomiting may occur.

CAUSATION

The exact cause of stomach cancer is unknown although the presence of the Helicopter pylori bacterium seems to be a major factor. Predisposing factors include environmental influences such as smoking and high alcohol intake. Because stomach cancer is more common amongst those with a family history and with people with type A blood, genetic factors are also implicated. Dietary factors, particularly methods of food preservation such as pickling, smoking or salting also have an influence on the prevalence of stomach cancer.

DIAGNOSIS

Stomach cancer is diagnosed through an examination that may include an upper gastrointestinal (GI) series; endoscopy or gastroscopy where a thin flexible tube is passed down the throat so the doctor can see into the stomach, esophagus and upper part of the bowel Barium meals and Barium swallows. Because stomach cancer can spread to the liver, the pancreas, and other organs near the stomach as well as to the lungs, the doctor may order a CT scan, a PET scan, an endoscopic ultrasound exam, or other tests to check these areas.

Stomach cancer can spread (metastasize) to the esophagus or the small intestine, and can extend through the stomach wall to nearby lymph nodes and organs. Metastasis occurs in 80-90% of individuals with stomach cancer, with a five year survival rate of 75% in those diagnosed in early stages and less than 30% of those diagnosed in late stages.

TREATMENT

Although stomach cancer may be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy, in many cases surgery is the treatment of choice. Even in patients whose disease is not considered surgically curable, resection offers a palliative effect and improves potential benefits from chemotherapy.

The nature and extent of the cancer determines what kind of surgery is most appropriate. Common surgical procedures include, partial and total removal of the stomach.

Antiemetics can control nausea, which increases as the cancer advances. In the more advanced stages, sedatives and tranquilizers may be necessary to control anxiety. Narcotics are commonly necessary to control sever and unremitting pain.

In some cases of advanced stomach cancer, a laser beam directed through an endoscope can vaporize most of the tumor and relieve obstruction without an operation.

PROGNOSIS

Stomach cancer is curable if detected early, but most people do not seek medical help until the disease is quite advanced, possibly because symptoms occur late and are often vague and non-specific. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidant vitamins (such as A and C) appears to lower the risk of stomach cancer. The rate of stomach cancer is about doubled in smokers so the cessation of smoking is essential.

In the United States and most of the Western world, the 5-year survival rate ranges from 5% to 15%. In Japan, where stomach cancer often is diagnosed early, the 5 year survival rate is about 50%. Five year survival rates for more advanced stomach cancers range from, around 20% for those with regional disease to almost nil for those with distant metastases.

Treatment for metastatic stomach cancer can relieve symptoms and sometimes prolong survival, but long remissions are not common. The survival of inoperable stomach cancer is usually only a few months if untreated. With chemotherapy the average survival is about 12 months. If cancer is found before it has spread, the five-year relative survival rate is about 61%.

Discipline of the mind and the body is the essence of yoga. Many yoga practitioners feel that without proper discipline and control over the mind and the body, you can not truly experience the full benefits of yoga. Part of the practice of yoga involves concentration and meditation, usually on breathing, to clear the mind and ground oneself to the spiritual and the emotional.

It is also important to remain disciplined in the practice of yoga. Once committed, regular yoga practice is the only way to tap into yoga’s true spiritual and health benefits. Regular practice increases concentration and the blood’s circulation and generally creates in one a sense of overall well-being.

Traditionally, the Hindu religion teaches spiritual and religious discipline in conjunction with yoga. The almost trance-like state experienced by some practitioners of yoga is believed to allow the mind to expand and receive knowledge and enlightenment, an essential element of many religion-based forms of yoga.

More widely practiced in the West, yoga without the practice of a religion focuses more on the physical discipline. Yoga as exercise helps to increase your body’s control and flexibility. You may find that the form of yoga you practice can be enhanced by heightened concentration and meditation and many instructors (yogis) focus on this as an integral part of the practice of yoga.

When intermingled with the meditation and focus on breathing, yoga also helps to control cravings. The emotional and physical control yoga creates allows one to more easily regulate how their body reacts to stress and increases the ability to have self-control. Many who practice yoga for weight loss experience as many benefits from the psychological discipline they develop as they do from the physical discipline.

To help with regular and sustained practice of yoga, you may choose to join a yoga class or have personal instruction from a yogi. Regular yoga practice at home can also be beneficial. Developing discipline takes place over time. You may even need to practice certain exercises repeatedly before mastery is attained. By being disciplined and committed, you can experience the increased physical and emotional well-being yoga provides.

Attaining emotional discipline and control can be trickier for some. That’s where meditation and concentration come in handy. Most practitioners concentrate solely on their breathing and free their mind from all other thoughts. Developing this discipline allows many people to remain calm during daily crises and help them develop self control over temptation (such as those faced when dieting).

Discipline and control allow practitioners of yoga to be at peace when practicing yoga and many practitioners translate that discipline into their everyday lives. To attain inner peace and overall well-being, yoga practitioners may even change their diet and their lifestyle to a healthier one, further enforcing the disciplines they have learned during the practice of yoga.

The application of yoga discipline in your everyday life can help you to become a calmer, more balanced human being and the health benefits caused by increased flexibility and improved circulation can allow you to live a longer and healthier life.

It is always difficult to promote the use of natural methods to treat this disease. Cancer is a very serious disease, which kills millions of people throughout the world and particularly in the West. Traditional medicine wants to arrogate to itself the exclusive right of scrutiny and treatment in this area. Yet the results are far from satisfying.

The cancer continues to defy the technology of modern medicine and remains, after decades of intensive research, an enigmatic disease, responsible each year of millions of death. While a few types of cancer are now successfully treated, several others remain extremely difficult to fight and are a major cause of mortality. More than ever, finding new ways in which we can improve the effectiveness of current anti-cancer therapies is of paramount importance. The naturotherapy is one of those means. “

Many oncologists recognize naturaltherapy as a preventive mode in order to avoid the development of cancer. They also recommend regular consumption of certain foods as a method to support conventional treatments for those who are undergoing cancer treatment, radiation and chemotherapy. However, for some, herbal remedies or natural cancer treatments have no positive effects on cancers, either preventive or curative.

A global study on a large scale has shown that if each person consumed at least 150g of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables per day, the risk of cancer would be decreased by 30%. If there were a pill that would fall by 30% the risk of cancer, it is likely that everyone would consume it. Why not try natural remedies? In fact, most plants used in natural remedies can grow in your own backyard (Astragalus, Burdock root, Green tea, for example). Along with natural cancer alternative and/or conventional cancer treatment, alimentation plays an important role in your recovery from cancer.

A good alimentation has not only a significant role in cancer prevention, but can also provide the cancer patient who must undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy, the means to fight against the aggressor. No treatment can work properly without a healthy diet, either conventional or natural cancer treatment.

The remedies exist in the form of dried or fresh plants for preparation and capsules or liquid ready to use. Of course, it is illegal in the USA to claim that a natural remedy can treat cancer, but we believe it is unfair not to mention these methods, which are supported by some doctors and testimonials patients, have no anticancer properties.

Many supplements and natural remedies can be used to fight against cancer, either alone or in supplement to conventional therapies. Our Cancer herbal remedies may reduce hair loss, improve appetite, reduce nausea (for those undergoing chemotherapy), and amplify the positive tumor shrinking effects of radiation therapy. A high blood cholesterol level is something that needs to be taken very seriously because it is one of the main risk factors for increased chances of arteriosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke. One of the best ways to deal with this medical condition is through diet and for most people that means finding a list of low cholesterol foods.

Fortunately it is relatively easy to separate food types into those that contain cholesterol and those that don’t. Any food that comes from an animal source contains cholesterol because it is a primarily used to create and maintain cell wall membranes along with hormone production.

Food from plant sources or derived from plant sources are for the most part cholesterol free and eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts can help significantly lower blood cholesterol levels. There is a big but that goes along with this because food preparation can significantly change whether or not that healthy food suddenly becomes a ticking cholesterol time bomb.

Recent studies into the effects of diet on cholesterol have found that it isn’t always the amount of cholesterol in a particular food that is dangerous. In fact many cholesterol containing foods don’t significantly raise blood cholesterol levels when eaten as is. What these studies have found is that saturated fat and Transfats are much more dangerous to cholesterol levels. When combined with high cholesterol foods in the preparation of meals these two fats can lead to dangerously high blood cholesterol levels.

This does not mean that eating high cholesterol foods is a good idea but by being aware of how to prepare your meals you can see significant reductions in your cholesterol levels. Here are some tips on how to best manage cholesterol levels through diet.

1. Avoid and eliminate foods high in saturated and Trans fats as well as avoid preparing meals with these types of fats. This is why fried foods are dangerous to anyone with high cholesterol levels.

2. Eat only lean cuts of meat in moderation. Grill or broil them to allow the fat to run off before eating.

3. The best source of protein in a low cholesterol diet can be gotten from chicken and seafood.

4. Eat fiber rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grain breads and cereals. Fiber has been shown to help remove cholesterol from the body and is an important part of the digestive process.

5. Dairy products can be eaten if you choose low fat or skim products that have had the saturated fats removed or significantly reduced.

6. Increase your intake of foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Much seafood such as salmon is rich in this vital nutrient or you can take it in supplement form.

As you can see managing this problem is much more then just finding a list of low cholesterol foods. While eating only these types of foods can decrease your risks you can do much more by understanding how certain foods and their preparation can affect cholesterol levels. The key to this is avoiding and eliminating saturated fats and Trans fats from your diet and eating those foods containing cholesterol in moderation.

Health, according to the dictionaries, is a feeling of well-being. That was the old definition! The modem definition of health says that you must not only feel all right but also that you must not be aware of any pain or irritation anywhere in your body. Moreover, you must have what the quacks used to call vim, vigor and vitality-a feeling of positive health. You must have the desire to be up and doing. You must be free from fatigue. You must not get tired easily.

Once we thought that we could give people a lot of simple rules for keeping their bodies in health. Now we have learned so much more about the nature of disease that the rules have become complicated. Doctors used to say that you could take three or four meals a day and that this would take care of your needs as far as health was concerned. The list included breakfast at 8 o’clock, dinner or lunch at noon, perhaps a supplement in the form of tea or a little snack around 4: 30 in the afternoon, and then supper or dinner about 7: 30. Nowadays we know that some people do even better on six small meals a day; others seem to be quite healthful with just a light lunch but with a fairly good breakfast and not too large a dinner. We are so individual in our construction and in our constitutions that it is impossible to put down a rule for positive patterns of eating or amounts of eating that will apply to all people.

The same considerations apply to rest and sleep. Some people need more rest and more sleep than do others. Some are able to get along quite satisfactorily on six hours; others seem to require as much as ten or twelve hours of sleep to be at their best during the waking hours. Eight hours of sleep might be put down as an average, with recognition, however, that some are above and others below the average.

The hygienists used to say that everyone ought to have at least a quart of water a day, recommending eight glasses-one before breakfast, one between each meal, one at each meal and one before going to bed. Nowadays we know that our appetites and our sense of thirst may be a reasonable indication of what we ought to have in the way of fluids. One health expert recommended three pints of water daily, indicating, however, that it could be taken in tea, coffee, cocoa, milk, soup or some other liquid. Pure water is an excellent drink, as is milk. When you take a beverage that is rich in nourishment as, for instance, beer, the nourishment must be counted in the daily intake as well as the fluid.

Food is not just bulk but includes also such specific constituents as protein, carbohydrates and fats, mineral salts and vitamins. The National Research Council, through its Food and Nutrition Board, has compiled a list of basic foods that everyone ought to have every day and on which he may build the remainder of his diet.

Why do we exercise? Among other reasons, exercise improves the power and tone of the muscles. It helps the blood by increasing the amount of oxygen that is carried by the coloring matter of the red blood cells. It stimulates the circulation, thus making certain that all of the tissues receive the proper amounts of oxygen and also that waste products are carried away. Exercise also provides relaxation because it is a pleasant undertaking if performed under proper circumstances. People who take competition too seriously and who disturb their nervous systems and fail to relax during exercise are not helped, but may well be injured by the wrong kind of exercise. Finally, those who exercise to the point of exhaustion find that recovery is somewhat slow; for them over-exercise has proved just as harmful or perhaps more harmful than would be no exercise at all.

The human body is a self-regulating mechanism. Ordinarily, elimination of waste material from the bowel and the bladder goes on without much attention from the person concerned. There is no absolute rule about elimination from the bowel. Doctors say once daily is average but some people go much longer and others go much more frequently, and both may be quite within the range of what is normal for them.

Even bathing may be carried to excess. Some people develop an absolute obsession about cleanliness. They will rush to wash their hands at the slightest sign of soiling. These people, in many instances, need examination from a psychological point of view. Some people indulge in bathing to a point at which they become a nuisance not only to themselves but to the rest of the family. They soak long hours in the tub, and end with fatigue. A bath that is too hot leaves a person gasping; a bath that is too cold may shock the entire heat—regulating mechanism of the body. All sorts of specialized baths, such as steam baths, salt water baths, carbon dioxide baths and similar ablutions are recommended for special purposes; but like every other specialty they need to be prescribed for the individual for certain specific purposes and when not so regulated may do harm.

One of the first books on hygiene designed to keep people in health was the Bible. The rules there set forth as to rest and relaxation and mental attitude and diet were all designed for people of a certain period.  Modem conditions have brought new points of view. Thus the day of rest varies among different races of people and among various religions. Similarly attitudes toward food vary with various races and religions. Scientific study has shown that it is not so much exactly what you do in this regard as observance of the need for regular periods of rest to permit recovery of the tired tissues. The diet should be free from infectious material and visible dirt. The point of view toward life must be moderate and temperate.

In the Middle Ages the School of Salerno developed a book called “The Regimen of the School of Salerno”. The chief emphasis in that guide to health and hygiene was moderation in all things. Any modem book of advice on health has to begin with the same general admonition: Be moderate in everything-moderate in food, in drink, in work, in thought and, particularly, in temper.

Nowadays we give much more consideration to the way in which anger, agitation, worry or excitement may seriously damage the functioning of various portions of the body. A contented mind is an essential to a healthful body.

Allergy is an umbrella term embracing all physical body reactions to certain triggering factors; most of the time with the environment. While western medical practice requires medical consultation if you suspect that you are allergic to certain substances or environmental factors; it is still a known possibility that Chinese medicine for allergy is also worth the try.

Chinese medicine makes use of natural herbs to treat different types of allergies. And in some parts of the world this approach is used in combination to conventional medical practice. There are proven evidences and testimonies from those who have experienced the positive effects of utilizing Chinese medicine for allergy.

The good thing with using natural herbs for allergy treatment is the fact that there will be no chances of facing the consequences of negative side effects. This is because you are making use of an all-natural organic substance with no harsh pharmaceutical ingredients in which the body may react to.

With Chinese medicine for allergy you are not only relieving the symptoms that the allergic reaction brings about. As you continue to consume the medicine even as symptoms have subsided, there is a greater possibility that the natural herb is working on to treat the underlying cause of the allergy. Soon, you will notice that fewer allergic episodes are occurring until it completely vanishes. This is another great possibility that Chinese medicine can bring about.

Many Chinese medicines for allergy are available in health food stores, herbalists, and other outlets selling Chinese traditional medicines. One of the most well-known natural herbs that have the potential of treating allergy is the Reishe Mushroom. This natural herb was recognized for its antihistamine properties as well as the capacity to lower cholesterol level in the blood. Reishe mushroom is available in capsule form from the mentioned Chinese medicine outlets. While eating it fresh is also a good idea, still the capsule form is a more convenient and effective method of getting enough dosage necessary to treat the allergy.

Other Chinese medicines for allergy:

Cure Allergy With Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the oldest Chinese mode of treatment that can be used virtually on all types of diseases.

Through acupuncture, Chinese medicine practitioners try to treat the problem right from their roots. As per Chinese medicine, allergies arise due to the element wind.

Acupuncture tries to address a person’s allergic reaction by treating the lungs, the spleen, or the stomach so that they won’t get easily irritated with allergens.

Herbal Treatment for Allergies with Minor Blue Dragon Formula

This Chinese herb is a good decongestant, which is especially helpful for people who experience nasal problems due to allergic reactions.

It would also clear one’s phlegm. The herb also strengthens the person’s lungs so that it becomes more tolerant to most allergens.

Natural Cure for Allergies with Astra 8

Astra 8 is another herbal formula that is designed to detoxify the lungs and the spleen. The herb could remove all the organisms that could make these two organs more prone to allergic reactions, as brought about by the wind and the environment. The herb can also help in making the person’s immune system stronger.

Chinese Treatment with Kinesiology for Allergy

Kinesiology is a part of the Chinese traditional way of healing. It can be classified as a diagnostic process in treating allergies. Here, the person is tested for sensitivities through the reaction of his muscles. A test substance will be used in order to determine if a person is allergic to it or not. If the muscles retracted, then the person is positively allergic to the substance.

While some communities combine Chinese medicine for allergy with conventional medical practices; it is still greatly suggested to consult everything with a doctor. The keys to successful dating for men

Dating is probably one of the most exciting yet daunting adventures any single individual might ever encounter. Traditional datingmeeting up, going out and eating outwith somebody you are interested with can be a challenge as well as a learning experience for everyone.

More than the women, men feel more pressured when going out on a date because they are expected to do almost everything to make the date a success. Since they are the ones who will carry out most of the so-called “dating tasks” here are some tips that can help men go through with the exciting process of dating the girl they are interested with.

BARING THE BASIC DATING ESSENTIALS

Dating can be a daunting task especially for those men who haven’t dated for a long time, for those who haven’t been successful with women, and even for those guys who are so used to dating without knowing the basic rules in playing the game.

Remember, people need conform the rules whether they like it or not. In the case of dating, there are simple rules that need to be followed to ensure success for both parties.

1.Ensure cleanliness by keeping on eye on your hygiene and style. The worst thing any man can do is to turn up on a date smelling, unshaven, and looking dirty so the first thing you should do is to take a bath, brush your teeth, and shave those stubborn stubbles. Men who do not know how to maintain hygiene are no-nos for the more hygienic sex. So it pays to spray on some decent cologne and gargle before you meet up with your date.

2.Dress up to look your best. Looking your best when you go out on a date gives the idea that you have prepared for the special occasion even if it’s only a first date. If you don’t have enough dough to buy new shoes or clothes, at least try to wear those decent ones to impress your date.

3.Be on time. The first impression of women is usually based on how much men value their time. If you ask a woman on a date, make sure that you can turn up on time because not doing so will give her the impression that you don’t value your word. If you don’t want your date to think you are unreliable, try be early or at least on time when going out on a date.

4.Before asking someone out, make sure you have a job to flaunt. Women always find security in men you are secured themselves. Although financial stability is too early to discuss, your current job will give her an idea if you can manage dating her for a long time. Men who have jobs give women the impression that they are ambitious and they have the will to go on top.

5.Do all the necessary preparations. Preparing for things you can say during the date will ensure the easy flow of conversation all throughout. Getting your knowledge levels up and sharing it with your date will definitely make her date interested. The safest topic to discuss includes current events so make sure you watch the news or read quality broadsheets.

6.Know when to stop talking and start listening. Opening up topics for a conversation will pave the way for an interesting intellectual stimulation but you must know when the ice has been broken. After you have given your thoughts on a certain topic, ask her what she thinks and listen to her intently.

7.Issues on bills. The general rule in dating is that whoever asks for that date should pay for it. Since you are the one who asked for and you are the man, then, by all means, you should pay the bill. But if the idea of your paying for the entire bill does not sit well to the woman you’re dating and she insists paying for her own, make a compromise. Suggest that she pays the half and you’ll pay for the rest.

8.Being a gentleman pays. Simple things that show your gentleness like holding the door open for her, letting her walk through the door first, and pulling out a chair for her will definitely make an impact on her. Showering her compliments throughout the day will also make her think that you appreciate her efforts of looking good for the date.

9.Watch out for body language. After the date, watch out for her body language before attempting to kiss her goodnight or before trying to seduce her to jump into your bed. Sex on first date is not a good thing unless she wants to. Lastly, don’t tell her that you’ll call her if you don’t have plans of doing so.

10.If you are serious in the woman you’re dating, start learning how to live a healthy life. Smoking and drinking only show irresponsibility and carelessness because you are not taking care of your health.

7. Yoga consists of a lot of practice, both physical and mental. These can be further split up into two major categories. The first is the performance of a set of exercises or techniques intended to produce a positive state of mind in us. The second is the complementary practice of letting go old behavioral patterns, habits and attachments that hold you back

8. In Yoga, focus is the key to making improvements. With focus come control and power, which is the nature of consciousness itself.

9. Return to the basics, the more you untangle your life the better off you will be.

10. Yoga is the progressive process of replacing your unconscious thought patterns and behavior with new, more beneficial patterns, which lead towards a better life. It takes time to reach this goal of self-realization. Hence, practitioners must first practice patience.

We should be willing to commit ourselves to a lifetime of practice. There must be a basic desire to grow, regardless of whether or not we achieve enlightenment in this life. One of Yoga’s fundamental beliefs is that no effort is ever wasted. Even the slightest attempt at transforming oneself makes a difference. It is patient cumulative effort that, ultimately, grows into self-realization.

Diabetes is growing by 3 percent each year for children and youth

November 14 is celebrated each year as Children’s Day and World Diabetes Day. This year the theme is “Diabetes in children and youth”. Let me take this opportunity to write about diabetes in children.

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases that affect children. It can strike children of any age, even toddlers and babies. If not detected during early childhood, the disease can have deadly consequences or result in serious damage to the brain. Diabetic child is often completely overlooked. This is the time miss-diagnosed as flu or doctors fail to diagnose it at all. Every parent, teacher, doctor involved in child care should be familiar with the warning signs and be alert to the threat.

The warning signs are Frequent urination, Excessive thirst, Increased hunger, Weight, Fatigue, Lack of interest and concentration, Blurred vision, Vomiting and abdominal pain (often mistaken as the flu).

In children with type 2 diabetes, the symptoms may be moderate or not. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes: Diabetes occurs as a result of problems in production and supply of the hormone insulin in the body. The body needs insulin to use energy that is stored in food. When a person has diabetes their body cannot create insulin (Type 1diabetes) or their bodies cannot use the insulin made effectively (type 2diabetes).

Type 1 diabetes is most common type of diabetes in children. However, as a result of increasing childhood obesity and always lifestyles, type 2 diabetes is also increasing rapidly in children and youth. In some countries type 2diabetes has become the most common type of disease in children.

Type 2 diabetes in children is probably under-diagnosed because it may have no symptoms. To prevent Type 2 diabetes in children, emphasis should be laid on physical activity, less frequent activities such as television and views of a healthy diet. If diabetes is diagnosed, paying close attention to all cardiovascular risk factors, as well as prevention is important. We need to fit in the modern industrial city on a healthy way. Diabetes is a serious health problem and expensive and there is much that can do to reduce its impact. The earliest description of diabetes from the Philippines to 2,500 years ago and the role of obesity, frequent behaviour and dietary factors are known in ancient times. What is needed now is concerted public health action against the risk factors for diabetes.

We can do our bit to prevent diabetes and other diseases. Food for children with diabetes is a minor consideration. A dietician will be able to tell you more but it is certain essential that your child has a healthy, balanced diet, high in complex carbohydrates and fibre. It is necessary to be careful Sweets but it need not be 100 per cent from the menu. Some of the foods planning of goals for children with diabetes are the same as for other children. They must eat food that will help them have good general health, normal growth and a healthy weight. But children with diabetes also have to balance their carbohydrate intake with their insulin and activity levels to maintain their levels of blood sugar under control. In addition, children with diabetes should also eat foods that help maintain the level of lipids or fats in the blood (such as Cholesterol and triglycerides) in a healthy range. Food this way may help prevent some of the long-term health problem that can cause diabetes. These days, with huge amounts of food choices, we need to teach them to read the labels of food, especially the carbohydrate content. They must understand the serving size and how to change one food for another.

Children with diabetes face the same challenges of food everyone – largely sticking to healthy eating habits over time. It can be difficult with so many temptations, so it is important to prepare food that your child enjoys. The food may make you plan vary depending on your child’s diabetes, but to help your child Dietician, you can tailor meals to planning your child’s food preferences and eating habits

Detox Health

Body cleanses or detoxes are popular treatments within alternative medicine. Advocates maintain that a special diet of a limited duration will remove accumulated toxins and other unwanted substances from the body. As such, they see regular cleanses as providing desirable effects or health benefits. The belief is that our modern lifestyle, with its stresses, strains, unhealthy food choices, lack of exercise and habits such as smoking all contribute to a lack of well-being.

There are various cleanses and diets to choose among. A vegan detox is one possibility. Advocates claim it helps our body eliminate the toxins and therefore shift the scales in favour of good health.

Veganism Explained

A vegan detox is rooted in veganism, which for some people is a permanent way of eating and living. Before discussing the vegan detox, it is good to understand what veganism is all about.

Veganism is a subset of vegetarianism, but with greater restrictions. Vegans eat or use no animal products. Vegetarians, for example, might consume cheese, eggs, butter, milk, cottage cheese and yogurt. Vegans do not. Vegans also do not use animal products in clothing or for other purposes.

If a temporary vegan detox is what interests you, then you have no need to go the length of eliminating leather, suede, and other similar products from your life. Detox Health

How Much Can a Vegan Detox Promote Health?

By definition, detoxification is a process in which you remove environmental pollutants from your body’s system. These pollutants enter our bodies in the foods we eat, through the use of alcohol and drugs, through exposure to environmental hazards and through breathing in fumes and pollutants in the air.

Vegans and people who follow the raw food diet are likely to tell you that the benefits of a temporary cleanse or detox are limited. They insist that the very idea that a simple diet can detoxify the entire body in a few days or a couple of weeks is impossible. The truth us that our bodies already have the capacity to repair, restore and regenerate tissues as well as eliminating toxins.

Although they agree that a detox diet might speed this process up a wee bit, this temporary diet cannot undo a lifetime of damage or even years of damage. Similarly, it is not especially helpful to slightly speed up the removal of toxins that would have moved through the system with forty-eight hours anyway.

However, advocates explain that a detox diet can be helpful if maintained for longer periods of time — at least a month, ideally more.

If you continue this way of eating for several months, advocates state that you will start to experience optimal benefits. You may feel some improvement after a few days, but a few months down the road, you will experience a heightened feeling of well-being, improvement in any pre-existing diseases or illnesses and increased mental alertness.

The Real Benefit: Improved Nutrition

Vegans point out that the real health advantages to a vegan diet do not stem from the cleanse or the detox, but rather because you have stopped eating unhealthy foods and are now eating foods that are in keeping with Nature’s plan for us. The improved nutrition leads to more stable blood sugar levels, better cholesterol levels and other indicators that suggest good health. Detox Health

Are you looking to lose weight? If you are, there is a good chance that you will start your own weight loss program. When many individuals start their own weight loss programs, they do so with the help of a number of weight loss products, like diet pills or exercise equipment. If you are interested in buying these types of weight loss products, you need to always be on the lookout of scams, as they do exist.

When it comes to weight loss products, like exercise equipment and diet pills, many people automatically wonder how they can tell if they are being scammed. Unfortunately, you often cannot tell by reading an advertisement in a magazine or online or by watching a television infomercial or even by looking at the weight loss product in question. The best way to determine if the weight loss product you are interested in buying is really worth your money is to do research first.

When it comes to researching weight loss products, there are a number of different ways that you can go about determining if the product or products you want to buy are worth the cost. One of the easiest ways to go about doing so is by visiting the online websites of retailers that allow their customers or the general public to rate or review their products. Many consumers like to alert others to a product that is a waste of money or even alert others to a product that is well worth the cost. If you are able to find weight loss product reviews, you are advised to read them.

When reading weight loss product reviews, like product reviews for diet pills or exercise equipment, it is important to remember that no product is perfect. Even the best products, like the ones that come highly rated and recommended, will have a few bad reviews. What you need to be cautious of is any weight loss product that has more bad reviews than it does good reviews. This is a surefire sign that the weight loss product in question may not be worth your money.

You can also find product reviews or just specific weight loss products being discussed by performing a standard internet search. When performing a standard internet search, you will want your search phrase to be the name of the weight loss product in question. Your standard internet search may lead you to online message boards where weight loss and other health issues are being discussed. These types of websites and message boards are a great way to also learn about weight loss products that you may not have otherwise came across.

Another way that you can determine if you are being “scammed,” by a weight loss product, is by examining the online website of the product distributor or manufacturer. When you buy a diet pill or another weight loss supplement, you should be provided with as much information as possible. Be cautious of any product whose website only claims to help you lose weight, but doesn’t explain how it is done. The same can be said for exercise equipment.

Another great way that you can determine if the weight loss products you are interested in buying are worth the money is by speaking with your doctor. Often times, you don’t even have to schedule a visit; a telephone call should get you the answers that you were looking for. Most doctors can let you know if a weight loss pill or supplement that you are interested in buying is worth the money. If they can’t tell you about the specific product in question, there is a good chance that they can at least review the ingredients with you. For exercise equipment, your physician may also be able to provide you with advice.

Of course, if you have the money to spend on weight loss products, you may be interested in going ahead and buying the product or products in question anyways. That is fine to do, but you also need to remember that many weight loss products, especially the ones featured on television infomercials are priced relatively high.

Our skin is very important to us and we should not compromise its health. This is especially true in this day and age where more and more toxins are present in the air than ever. We are exposed to harsher conditions, punishing sunlight and contaminated air – and while it is doing damage to the ozone, it is also slowly eating away at the skin. For others, the effect might be a little more accelerated than others and that is why science and the pharmaceutical/cosmetic industry has stepped in with an answer – a temporal reprieve to the problem. Skin creams can give you clearer youthful skin, combating the effects of a more tarnished atmosphere as well as giving you the power to turn back the hands of time for a little while by making those wrinkles and fine lines disappear. Here are some tips you need to know about to keep your skin looking young and healthy at all times.

Always have a moisturizer handy, because dry skin is the number one villain of healthy looking skin and overly dry skin can actually fissure painfully and bleed out, leaving unsightly scabs and scars all across the skin. Constantly moisturizing your skin will ensure you this will not happen. Also, you need to have a light skin cleanser – one that you can use for both your hands and your face. This helps to remove the dirt, grime and even light soils from the pores of your skin. Cleaners not only keep skin looking clean, but they prevent a lot of other problem from cropping up with long-term use. Dirt and grime stuck in the follicles can lead to an infection, which will turn up as an unwanted acne or pimple. And that is just social death for anyone in this world we live in today.

You should also be in the know about some of the key ingredients used in many skin care products – especially if you insist on buying those which do not use synthetic chemicals at all. The popular ingredients can include the soothing Aloe Vera or even the highly hydrating avocado fruit. Some of these creams employ the use of olive oil, strawberries and even garlic root extracts to stimulate moisture, act as an antibacterial formula as well as using the natural vitamins within to repair damaged skin and keep it looking healthy. A quick look would reveal to you the variety of skin care products that tout the one stop solution for clearer youthful skin. Experience would denote that there is no one solution, but several ways for you to always get that glow you want.

Smart shoppers always have a bag with several creams and lotions in it, and this is because they prefer having focused products, rather than an all in one diluted solution that may be a jack of all trades but master of none. As always, I will end my article with a reminder – nothing beats eating fruits and vegetables everyday. What you put inside you is just as important as the stuff on the outside. Combine the two and you will get a platinum skin care solution – a first class guide to clearer youthful skin.

It is common in the Western world and is rare in Asia and Africa. In countries where the people have adopted western diets, the incidence of colorectal cancer is increasing. There was a time when giving someone a beauty related item as a gift was seen as being the easy option. But now there is a whole range of premium beauty gifts that are sure to bring a smile to the face of anyone lucky enough to be on the receiving end of one.

One of the main reasons that gifts from big name companies are becoming so popular is that our everyday skin regime is very different from the one we indulge in when we have some spare time to ourselves. While some people may use a cheaper everyday type of body lotion for during the week, those same people like to pamper themselves at the weekend, by dipping into a more luxurious range.

If you like the idea of treating someone you know to an indulgent weekend in, you can create a personalised beauty gift that will cater for their every need. For example, start with some luxury hair products to give their locks some much needed care and attention in place of their usual shampoo.

Then buy a selection of items they may not normally use â?? such as a mask for example â?? to really make their skin feel alive again. Thatâ??s part of the beauty of buying this type of gift; it allows the recipient to enjoy aromas and sensations that their normal range of products doesnâ??t achieve for them.

Beauty products like these are big business, and over time the ranges available have expanded to introduce more ingredients and combinations to treat your loved ones with. There are plenty of ways to creatively give a gift of beauty products as well; they donâ??t just have to be wrapped in the usual gift wrap.

Why not buy a woven gift basket and fill it with a selection of luxury beauty products for example? Any combination of luxury products nestled onto a bed of shredded tissue paper and decorated with cellophane to finish would be a well received gift.

Gift bags, boxes and even china dishes also work well as containers to put your gifts in. However they are presented, luxury beauty products are a far cry from the usual soap and flannel gifts that used to be the norm. They are well received because itâ??s obvious that a lot of thought has gone into the items; not only in the selection you have made but also in the creation of the product itself.

That is why luxury beauty gifts will be around for a long time to come.

Exercise is a vital part of the management of diabetes. All diabetics should aim to make exercise a part of their daily routine. Exercise can help to improve the quality of life for diabetics. But there are some safeguards to consider before you start an exercise regime. It is wise to consult your health professional before you begin. This would be true for anyone, but it is especially so for someone who suffers from diabetes.

There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 usually manifests itself at an early age. It is sometimes referred to as adolescent diabetes. In Type 1 the body cannot produce enough of its own insulin. Type 2 diabetes manifests itelf later in life. In Type 2 diabetes the body fails to produce adequate levels of insulin or it becomes resistant to its own insulin.

In both types of diabetes the body is unable to process sugar properly. Blood sugar levels increase because the body cannot transport sugar to the cells where it is needed. It becomes essential to reduce blood sugar levels. This can be done by medication, by diet and by exercise.

Exercise can, therefore, be a valuable tool in diabetes management. This is true for both types of diabetes. Whether an individual has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes they can benefit from exercise.

Type 1 diabetics will benefit from exercise because it can assist in the maintainance of insulin sensitivity and increases the use of glucose by the muscles. Exercise will also help to avoid excessive weight gain. Type 1 diabetes cannot be cured, but some of the health problems associated with it can be reduced by means of exercise.

Type 2 diabetics will also benefit from exercise. Type 2 diabetes is preventable and exercise will help in its prevention. Even such a simple activity as a 30 minute walk every day can reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

To sum up: exercise will reduce blood sugar levels and help maintain insulin sensitivity. It will also improve circulation. This is important for diabetics because they are known to have circulatory problems. Diabetics often suffer from poor circulation in the legs and feet. Exercise helps to promote blood circulation. Regular exercise will also help to lower blood pressure and so reduce the risk of stroke.

There are, however, certain risks associated with exercise for diabetics. Since exercise lowers blood sugar diabetics must measure their blood sugar levels before and after exercise. The body will use more sugar during exercise and become more sensitive to insulin. Exercise can potentially result in hypoglycemia. Checking blood sugar levels will avoid this danger. With this precaution the benefits of exercise will outweigh the possible risks.

A diabetic should also take care to carry candy or fruit juice with them during exercise in case their blood sugar falls too low. They should make sure to inform the staff at the gym or their exericise partners that they are diabetic. An exericse buddy is a good idea for anyone but doubly so for a diabetic. Exercising with a friend can help maintain your motivation and for a diabetic it can help avoid the dangers of your blood sugar falling too low.

Watch out for the tell tale signs of low blood sugar level. Check your heart rate after exercise. Are you sweating abnormally, shaking, or feeling very hungry? These can all be signs of low blood sugar.

The general rule for everyone beginning exercise is to take things slowly. For diabetics this should be emphasised. Build up your routine as your level of fitness improves. Set yourself realistic goals. Begin with short sessions of gentle exercise. Gradually move on to more ambitious targets are you feel confident to do so. There is not need to push yourself to the point of exhaustion. Little and often is the best plan.

Successful incorporation of exercise into your daily routine will significantly improve your quality of life as a diabetic. It will help you manage your condition and avoid many of the health problems associated with diabetes.

Weâ??re in trouble, Kansas â?? heavy trouble. Thatâ??s â??heavyâ? as in obese. Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and may lead to other life-threatening illnesses, like Type II Diabetes or heart disease. Yet, across our state the number of overweight and obese individuals is rapidly increasing. In the Sunflower State alone, more than 61% of adults are overweight or obese â?? and the cost to our taxpayers for dealing with obesity-related illnesses adds up to a staggering $195 million per year.

But what is obesity, exactly? Obesity is the condition of being significantly above a healthy weight, as determined by oneâ??s body mass index (BMI). A person with a BMI of at least 25 is considered overweight; and someone who has a BMI of 30 or above is considered obese.

Obesity in Kansas is more than just trouble. It is an epidemic â?? the most serious threat to public health currently extant. How can we stop it?

The Surgical Option

The fight against obesity can be a struggle. Many people attempt to lose weight by means of trendy diets, Spartan exercise programs, or special pills, shakes and powders. Some sufferers actually lose a lot weight this way, but the vast majority regain it quickly as soon as they discontinue their weight loss program â?? and many more do serious damage to their health in the process.

Another increasingly popular option is weight loss surgery. Numerous studies have shown that bariatric surgery is an effective means of minimizing or resolving obesity-related health problems for individuals who are severely or morbidly obese. It can also help people who struggle with their weight but have no co-morbidities achieve a healthy BMI and reduce the likelihood that they will develop weight-related health problems in the future.

About Weight Loss Surgery

There is no royal road to instant weight loss. The only way to lose excess weight is to reduce the bodyâ??s caloric intake below its daily caloric needs. When this happens, the body begins to draw upon stored energy (fat) to keep functioning. Weight loss surgery is a minimally invasive medical procedure intended to counter a patientâ??s obesity by limiting the amount of food â?? and thus calories â?? that he or she can consume.

Bariatric procedures are performed under general anesthesia, and most (though not all) are performed laparoscopically. The three main types of weight loss surgery are: malabsorptive (during which the patientâ??s intestinal tract is altered), restrictive (during which the surgeon creates a smaller stomach pouch that limits the amount of food needed for the patient to feel full), and combination (during which the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and alters the patientâ??s intestinal tract). Each procedure entails different risks and benefits.

Considering Surgical Weight Loss

Weight loss surgery can be a true lifesaver, if the patient is willing to adopt comprehensive changes in diet and lifestyle along with the surgery as part of a total health-improvement plan. Patients who fail to follow postoperative instructions or who refuse to alter their unhealthy lifestyles will almost certainly regain weight lost over time.

Although it is an effective weapon in Kansasâ?? arsenal against obesity, weight loss surgery is no magic bullet. Those considering bariatric surgery as an option for the management of obesity should research their options and discuss with their physician the risks and possible outcomes of these procedures before making any decision.

Men, just as much as women, need skin care products to make themselves feel good about their appearance, making them more attractive to the opposite sex. Aside from that, men take good care of their skin so they will feel more confident at work and at play.

Although both men and women pay attention to their physical appearance, men primarily groom themselves for hygienic purposes. When women are worried about any pimple marks or blackheads, men usually encounter burns or reddish dots after shaving. That is because not all men are educated with the proper skin care tips, such as what kind of products to use after shaving.

For example, some men just shave their mustache or beards without even applying an alcohol-free shaving cream or applying moisturizer right after shaving. Some men only consider a bar of soap as their primary grooming tool to clean their face and their body.  In reality however, experts suggest that men also get a facial. The reason: men also get as much dirt as women, like getting blackheads. Men can also use other skin care products like a facial mask if they are uncomfortable being treated in a spa or skin salon.

Men also experience having pimple breakouts due to oily skin. They may also experience having dry skin because of the regular bar soap they use for the face. One of the best skin care tips: use a foaming cleanser instead of a regular soap for the face. The reason for this is that the soap can actually remove the natural amount of oil that gives moisture to the facial skin.

Grooming the skin is not just for females but for males as well. Menâ??s skin care is just as important as cleaning â?? it also encourages right grooming and hygiene.

Cancer Can Be Cured â?? Natural Herbal Remedies

Although we know more about cancer today it is still literally a growing concern. Most people have a family member or know someone who suffers from cancer. Many people have died. Death tolls and suffering are alarming. Having said that, there are many ways we are able to prevent and protect ourselves from contracting Cancer.

The causes are many and largely unknown. It is difficult to predict both onset and final outcome. However, in spite of all the doom and gloom, many people myself included; do recover fully cured of terminal cancer. It is not the death sentence it once was. Simply put, cancer is invasive and there are natural, powerful, preventions and cures.

By way of explanation; cancer cells are abnormal and are called free radicals. Free radicals attack healthy cells, divide and continue to spread throughout the body. Malignant cancers are life threatening and terminal. Benign cancers tend to be less invasive and not life threatening. They can however, become malignant in some rare cases. No one is safe from cancer. It affects people of all ages, young and aged. The elderly are most at risk given their frailty.

Cancer has been linked to Carcinogens. Through toxic poisons introduced into the body, or contact made with infectious agents. Smoking is a direct cause. Over 4,000 carcinogens and poisons have been identified in tobacco. These include Formaldehyde, Cyanide, tar, nicotine and many other poisons. Contact with Radiation, Asbestos, Motor oil, other chemicals and agents are also main causes. Many causes of Cancer remain undetected and unknown.

Cancer also has the ability to alter genetic blueprints. Indeed it is hereditary in some people. Therefore, some are more susceptible to Cancer than others, through exposure to toxic elements and/or genetic reproduction.

Ongoing Research has taught us much about Cancer. We are therefore better equipped to deal with both prevention and cure. A complete cure-all is still some ways off, given the complexity of the disease. Lack of data is also a barrier.

Diet is vital. Food intake serves as a major cause of Cancer. Food products are known to include minute traces of poisons introduced in the manufacturing process. Chemicals, additives and preservatives are also a high risk factor. Regular food intake has therefore a cumulative effect. This increases the amount of poisons found in the system.

High amounts of toxins and chemicals introduced in this manner, cause severe illness and mortality rates. Other harmful factors in diet are overtly high amounts of saturated fats and extreme bad Cholesterol levels. Very high sodium levels through salt intake are also contributing factors. Although not conclusive, causes are linked to high instances of prostrate cancer in males.

Smoking cessation and limiting the amounts of additives, preservatives and toxicity in the body, prevent and cure cancer. As is complete abstinence from manufactured and processed food. Fresh green vegetables, plants, fruits and juices are high in anti-oxidants that both prevent and cure cancer.

Again diet is vital. Green foods produce antioxidants that attack and replace free radical cells in the body. Free radical cells are morphed into healthy cells through the aggressive work of antioxidants. Asparagus, Kale and Spinach are examples high in antioxidants. Organic foods are best. Noni juice, Goju and Xango juices are also very high in antioxidants.

All prevent and cure Cancer. In my case the abstinence of poisons and chemicals and the introduction of all organic foods, fruits, juices, and herbal medicines have restored me to full health. I have experienced a miraculous cure from Cancer and certain death. I know many other people who also have been spared certain death from Cancer by these methods.

Cancer can affect anyone. The good news is; life expectancy for cancer victims has increased. Mortality rates are decreasing markedly. Many Cancers can be cured. Simply put, Herbal and natural cures together with organic diets rich in antioxidants reduce, prevent and cure Cancer. In addition, complete abstinence from ingesting toxic poisons into the body, prevent and cure most Cancers. I have heard many people say; they do not like to eat vegetables and certain foods. This begs the question: what are you prepared to do to live.

Do not be limited by your own negativity. Find the things you do like. All that is needed is to take action.

A patient recently came into my office for a consultation. She was in her early 50s, overweight, and was struggling with constant tiredness and a sense of being overwhelmed. She had tried multiple diets, with little to no success, and when she succeeded in dropping a couple of pounds, they came right back on. She was sick and tired of being sick and tired. She, like countless other baby boomers, is dealing with a physical condition that is nearly epidemic in proportion. If untreated, it has the potential to lead to full blown diabetes. This condition is called insulin resistance.
As I have treated numerous patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes, over and over again the thought occurs to me that the diagnosis of diabetes does not magically happen overnight. It is a process that the body goes through as it compensates for an unhealthy state.
Diabetes and Insulin Resistance
At the outset, we must differentiate between Diabetes Mellitus Type I and Type II. Diabetes Mellitus Type I occurs when the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas (beta cells) so that an inadequate amount of insulin is secreted and blood sugar rises, with subsequent life-threatening ketoacidosis. Type II Diabetes, on the other hand, is a product of our Western society’s habit of overeating carbohydrates, especially refined carbohydrates (sugar). It is preceded by the condition I described earlier, called insulin resistance.
Before moving on to what procedures I use in my practice to treat diabetes and insulin resistance, let’s look at where this whole problem with diabetes began. This requires us to do some elementary biochemistry. All carbohydrates eventually break down in the body into glucose. As the blood glucose, or sugar, rises, insulin is released from the beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin takes the glucose to insulin receptors on each cell in the body, so that glucose can enter the cell. On the average, 50% of this glucose will be burned as energy, 10% will be stored as glycogen, and 40% is stored as triglycerides. [ii] Glycogen is the storage form of glucose which can be immediately released when the body needs more sugar. Most of the glucose stored as glycogen is in muscle, and the rest is stored in the liver. Triglycerides are a specific type of fat (lipid) molecule that can be burned as energy in the body; however, they are not as easily accessible as glycogen.
When refined carbohydrates (sugar) are ingested (cookies, candies, cakes, Twinkies, PopTarts), especially when taken without fiber, blood glucose levels rise rapidly. This rapid rise in blood sugar is followed by an overshooting of the amount of insulin released from the pancreas, causing the blood sugar to drop or fall below normal. The body does not like the sugar levels to be low, so it triggers a stress response in the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland will release adrenalin, which stimulates the breakdown of glycogen in the liver, slowly causing the glucose levels to rise in the blood.
Another way to relieve the symptoms of hypoglycemia triggered by this overshooting is by the ingestion of another refined carbohydrate. These two corrective mechanisms may cause the blood sugar to overcorrect (that is, the blood sugar’s too high again), with another overcorrection by insulin, and the cycle repeats itself over and over and over … .
Effects of Diabetes on the Body
After years of these glucose swings, the cell wall thickens (there are approximately 30 trillion cells in our body), insulin receptors become less efficient at glucose delivery into cells, and insulin resistance results. By definition, insulin resistance is seen as high fasting levels of glucose and insulin. Normal healthy fasting level of glucose is between 75-80, although any number in the 80s is acceptable. A healthy level of insulin in the fasting state is 0-5, while 5-10 is borderline. Anything above 10 is cause for concern. A diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus Type II is made when the fasting glucose level is greater than 126 or 140 on two separate occasions.
To understand the effects of high glucose levels to the body, we need to understand a principle called glycosylation [iii] . This is a fancy term for the binding of glucose to proteins. Glycosylated LDL (“bad” cholesterol) molecules do not bind to LDL receptors, nor shut off cholesterol synthesis. Glycosylated red blood cells do not carry as much oxygen, are more sticky, and clump together more. Glycosylation of the lens of the eye may lead to cararacts. Glycosylation of the myelin sheath around nerves leads to loss of nerve function, tingling, pain, and numbness called neuropathy. Atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the blood vessels) is the single biggest complication of diabetes. It may be due to platelet stickiness, glycosylated LDL, glycosylated red blood cells, or glycosylation of proteins in the blood vessel wall.
Atherosclerosis causes a reduction in blood flow, with subsequent organ damage, hypertension, cyanotic feet (with possible gangrene and amputation), retinopathy, and even kidney dysfunction and failure. Poor healing of skin from infection or trauma leads to chronic ulcers or sepsis (bacteria spreading throughout the body through the blood stream). [iv]
High insulin levels affect the body differently. They increase fat formation and storage, while inhibiting fat breakdown to be used as energy. This makes it easy to gain weight, and VERY difficult to lose weight. High insulin also enhances sodium (salt) reabsorption from the kidney, thus promoting water retention and hypertension. High insulin levels also stimulate certain ovarian hormones that result in elevations in free testosterone, with subsequent androgen effects. [v]
Treatment for Insulin Resistance and Diabetes
Diet is the reason we got into this mess and diet is the key to getting out of it! Since all carbohydrates break down into sugar, we must decrease the total amount of carbohydrates coming into the body. This translates into no more than 60-100 grams of carbohydrates per day — the less, the better. We need to look at those foods that are high and low in carbohydrates. As a start, all sugar must be eliminated. The next highest source of carbohydrates comes from potatoes (look out, Idaho!) and grains such as wheat (bread and pasta) and rice. Fruits are the next highest source of carbohydrates; their mostly fructose sugar is converted in the body into glucose. Certainly, whole fruit, with its fiber, and whole grains (rather than refined flour or wheat) for breads and pasta, and whole brown rice are much better tolerated than the refined, processed white foods and low fiber juices.
The legumes, which include beans, peas and soy, have about 1/3 carbohydrates, 1/3 protein, and 1/3 fats. (This is a highly simplified version of these ratios.) Generally nuts and seeds have that same ratio. Vegetables have the least amount of carbohydrates, although corn, tomatoes and carrots (the ones we tend to like the most) are the highest of the vegetables in the carbohydrate category. There are no carbohydrates in meats, cheese, or eggs.
So, the recommendation is: eat less of the breads, potatoes, rice, pasta, and fruit categories, and eat more of the legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, eggs, cheese and meat (sparingly) categories.
Nutritional Options
There are nutritional substances that reduce insulin resistance in the body. These include chromium [vi] , vanadium, biotin and alpha-lipoic acid. There is mixed success in reducing carbohydrate cravings with Gymnema or L-Glutamine, but these are certainly worth a try if sugar cravings persist. Vitamin E at 900 IU/day improves insulin action and may prevent many long-term complications. It also plays a significant role in the prevention of diabetes [vii] (the recent vitamin E scare is incorrect). For more information, you may want to visit my blog site, www.drstangardner.com).
Magnesium plays an important role in glucose management, through its effect on insulin. Magnesium levels are lowest in those patients with diabeti
c complications. Vitamin C is needed for collagen formation, which is at the core of all repair in the body. It also improves insulin sensitivity and is a potent antioxidant. It inhibits glycosylation of proteins. [viii] Vitamin B6 protects against diabetic neuropathy, probably because it also inhibits glycosylation. Some studies indicate it may even resolve gestational diabetes. [ix] Omega 6 fatty acids offer protection against diabetic neuropathy, and omega 3 fatty acids protect against atherosclerosis and augment insulin secretion. Niacinamide may prevent development of Type I Diabetes Mellitus. If taken early enough after onset, it may help restore beta cell function, or slow down their destruction in Type I Diabetes Mellitus. [x]
Exercise enhances insulin sensitivity, perhaps through increasing levels of chromium. Lowered triglycerides and improved weight loss are other beneficial effects of exercise. The benefits of exercise are addressed in another article.
Summary
1 Low carbohydrate diet (no more than 60-100 grams per day).
2. Chromium (200-400 micrograms/day)
3. Vanadium (100-125 milligrams/day long term or 5-10 grams/day, short term)
4. General supplements include:
a) Vitamin C (2000 mg/day)
b) Vitamin B6 (150-200 mg/day)
c) Vitamin E (900 IU/day)
d) Magnesium ( 600-1000 mg/day)
5. If insulin resistance is still present with the above recommendations, add Biotin (9-16 mg/day), Glucophage (500-1700 mg/day). Glucophage needs a prescription.
6. For Type I Diabetes Mellitus, Niacinamide (1000-2000 mg/day) and insulin
This approach puts a much heavier emphasis on treating insulin resistance, the underlying cause of diabetes, rather than treating the symptoms of high blood sugar with medications like sulfonylureas that push the beta cells toward increasing insulin release, irrespective of the glucose level in the blood. More insulin is not what is needed. Less insulin resistance is needed. With this approach, we get away from the problems associated with high insulin levels. We also avoid the potential exhaustion of beta cells because of their chronic high production to handle insulin.
Diabetes is the end result of problems in the body that can be addressed with nutrition. The positive results I have seen in my practice are incredibly successful! It is critical to begin addressing our health issues at the cause level, rather than the end organ damage level.

High cholesterol is determined by taking a blood test and is responsible for many health problems, including heart disease, gallstones, impotence, mental impairment and high blood pressure.

The disease is caused by several factors, some of which can be controlled and others that cannot. It is a silent condition that does not cause recognizable symptoms. High cholesterol is frequently linked to various forms of heart disease, such as heart attacks, strokes, and artery disease. It’s is often linked to a diet which is, or has been, rich in saturated fat.

The condition can affect anyone because it is a condition that affects your arteries by blocking off some of the passageway for blood to reach the heart.  High cholesterol or hypercholesterolemia is defined as total cholesterol greater than 200 mg/dL with the high risk category greater than 240 mg/dL.

High levels are among the primary causes of heart disease, because cholesterol produces fatty deposits in arteries. It can be avoided by staying away from processed foods and fatty cuts of meat.

High cholesterol is the best known of all the many threats to a healthy heart. It is more common in men younger than 55 years and in women older than 55 years. This condition increases the risk of other conditions, depending on which blood vessels are narrowed or blocked.  It is largely preventable and treatable. A high cholesterol reading is a total cholesterol reading over 240. It is diagnosed by a total serum cholesterol test.

This disease is something that every individual should take seriously, even if you have not been diagnosed as having it. It may be genetic, but in order for it to get it out of hand, your diet must be poor.

High cholesterol levels in the blood could affect the heart, kidneys, brain and other parts of the body and puts you at increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral artery disease. It tends to run in families, so obviously genes play a role. High cholesterol caused by inherited (genetic) lipid disorders usually is treated aggressively at any age, often by using medications.

Treatment for the condition should not be based on a single LDL cholesterol measurement. It should be based on the average of 2 or 3 measurements. Treatment is even more critical for those who already have coronary artery disease or diabetics or those who have had a heart attack or stroke.

Treatment will depend on whether you need primary or secondary prevention. However, diet therapy is most effective for lowering cholesterol in people who have higher-than-average fat intake in their diets.

Supplement your diet with vitamins A, C and E and the mineral selenium. Supplements contain specific ingredients that support the body and help it to normalize cholesterol levels naturally, lowering total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides.

Supplements For high triglycerides should always be discussed with your own health practitioner.  Supplements can be taken before or after meals. These are only part of Omega 3 total intake so be sure that Omega 3 foods are considered.

A recent study found that supplements containing red rice yeast and fish oil lower high cholesterol levels even more effectively than statin medications. Another great supplement is GUGGUL: (gum guggul), a resin produced by the mukul mirth tree.

Supplements as well as Omega 3 foods should be part of the calculated total intake.  Supplements contain specific ingredients that support the body and help it to normalize cholesterol levels naturally lowering total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides.

Fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while some nuts (English walnuts) and vegetable oils (canola, soybean, flaxseed/linseed, olive) contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

Fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) also may have some effect on lowering blood pressure. Fish contains omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids which decrease the chances of getting blood clots. Fish is a good source of cholesterol lowering foods because they help you achieve a level of good cholesterol.

Omega 3 fish oils have the benefits of fish oil without the negative impact of consuming mercury, which is unfortunately now found in pretty much all fish sources. Omega 3 fatty acids are useful for fighting disease and also preventing disease before they gain a foothold on our bodies.

Omega 3 fatty acids are important for their ability to fight a variety of disease organisms thereby improving your total health picture. They can also help with a multitude of common ailments and are available in supplements; but it is not necessary to purchase these since it is contained in many of the foods we eat.

TB Wright One Penny Millionaire!™

The source of cancer doesn’t exist anywhere but in the mind. Some people will read that sentence and react with “but cancer is real!” If that’s what you did, then read the line over again. Yes, cancer is a real creation of the mind, and yes, it does exist in time and space, but regardless, the source of cancer always originates within us. Upon hearing that Truth, most people immediately want it proved to them. But Truth cannot be “proved to” because it can only be “proved by.” That’s just the way Truth works. Anyone who is arrogant enough to believe that they can prove Truth to another is just way off mark, unless of course they’re a Saint, The Buddha, or Jesus, but that’s another conversation entirely. This “proved by” is just the way The Universe works. Truth is proved by our living out of it, not by our proving it to the disbelievers, something that customarily can’t be done anyway! In every case, your own experience is what is of value to you, not any other’s, except that is, to support you in showing yourself that whatever truth you see being lived out by another, can be and has been, done. But after that eye opener, still, it is you who have to be off and running toward proving whatever Truth you are interested in living out, through your own example.

Think about proof in this way. Ten thousand millionaires can give you ten thousand methods for achieving wealth, but unless you take a single one of them up on their method and then apply it to your own life, you won’t have gained a single penny. No millionaire can prove to someone in poverty, who refuses to develop the mindset necessary to get themselves out of their poverty, that their methods work. Only that person in poverty can prove by following those methods, that they work. Truth is belief lived out through action. Our health is no different, in that it too follows this Universal rule of belief/action/there’s the proof! Ten thousand sources can come at you from ten thousand different directions, all saying the same thing, that your health is up to you, and that with your mind you can improve any physical condition at any time, but unless you actually believe and then practice this Truth, you won’t shift your health in the desired direction you want it to go in. I would imagine that would be toward more and more robust and vibrant health!

Our dilemma with our health and shifting it ourselves through the power of our mind is that we have been so thoroughly trained in doing exactly the opposite. We have been brainwashed to take the easy way out. Common practice is to take a drug, and hope that “it” cures us. But think about it. What do drugs actually do? They might for instance, kill bacteria at a more rapid rate than our bodies usually manage to do, but that’s only because we have not yet trained ourselves to be that healthy through our minds! And even when we take an anti-biotic, after it’s done its job, what heals our bodies? Our bodies do! Through the power of our minds. So the job drugs actually do is to allow our bodies to more rapidly heal themselves, through the only means available for our bodies to heal; our own bodies, and that’s it! Drugs have their value, just like herbs and other remedies have always had their value, but the greatest value on our health of all is our body as it is directed by our minds! Just ask any doctor if stress is not the one most influential factor on our health. And where does that come from? Us! Our minds! Through worrying! Through having excessive concern! It would follow then, that if a negative force such as stress that so obviously only comes from our minds, can so affect our bodies, that there also must exist a positive aspect of our minds that can affect our bodies in the opposite direction from that which stress leads us; toward robust health!

One note on drugs, or any other powerful catalyst we can use within our lives, for whatever reason that catalyst was developed, or is used. The use of drugs to support our bodies, regardless of the medical modality that most resonates with you, is something humans have done ever since time began. What’s changed is our shift into much more of a sole reliance on drugs, rather than a balanced reliance on our minds first, and then drugs, to eventually support us in healing. Used together with our positive mindsets, herbs, drugs, homeopathy, or any other modality you choose to use, can be highly effective. And it’s not that any modality is not effective, they all are, but only within their particular area of workability. For instance, when you have an open wound, you might want to use surgery, not acupuncture. That choice does in no way diminish the effectiveness of acupuncture within its realm at all. Neither does choosing any particular modality for healing, in any way diminish the effectiveness of any other modality either. This conversation was presented in order to diminish the “battle” between adherents of modalities. There is no battle. There’s only your health and then to choose what works best for you in any particular set of circumstances. And regardless of the modality you choose, it is now and ever will be, still your mindset first, and then your body, that eventually causes healing to happen.

Ultimately, just like proving that cancer originates only in the mind, it is us who have to prove whatever model of Truth we come up with, to ourselves, and then to live that model out through practice. How many inspirational stories have you read over the course of the last twenty years, about people who with their minds have deliberately cured themselves of cancer? There have been thousands of those stories published. How many tapes have you listened to, or movies have you watched, about not only miracles of journeys from poor health into robust health and wellness, but also simple stories of perseverance and strength that inspired and motivated you? Read those books and those stories, listen to those tapes, and watch those movies. There is a communication in there for you that will ultimately lead to your own increasing wellness on a continual and lifelong basis, whether that wellness is of your body, your relationships, or your financial picture. How many times do you have to do so? The rule of thumb is to watch those movies and read those stories as many times as it takes, and that’s it. Because another Truth is that if one single human being has ever done anything, whatsoever, then that possibility also, right now, exists for any one of us to do as well, period, bar none. Including healing ourselves of every condition imaginable, because it’s already been done! Just another Universal Truth!

Minnesota is known as â??the fittest state in the nationâ?. Our stateâ??s fine climate, its friendly folks, and its famous hot-dish hospitality combine to keep the overall health of Minnesotans well above the national norm. Sadly, however, we are below par in one important area of health: obesity. In fact, here in the North Star State, almost 61% of the population is overweight or obese.

And while looking bad is a consequence of obesity, itâ??s far from the worst. Obesity kills people, both by wrecking their health and by destroying their spirit. Elevated blood sugar levels and coronary problems aside, the shame and self-hatred felt by many of the obese can lead to serious psychological problems â?? even suicide.

Itâ??s beyond being just a problem. Itâ??s a crisis. Many scientists and physicians believe that the obesity epidemic is the most serious health threat facing the population of our state.

Dealing with Obesity

If obesity were just a matter of losing weight, there would be no problem. Once a personâ??s daily caloric intake drops below the level needed to sustain life, theyâ??ll lose weight â?? the laws of physics guarantee it.

But of course itâ??s not that simple. Yes, we eat too much â?? but why? Nothing in nature favors overeating, yet we do it anyway. If we could crack the secret of what makes people eat too much of the wrong foods, weâ??d be halfway to curing obesity.

Unfortunately, many Minnesotans try gimmicks in an attempt to slim down — fad diets, exercise programs, so-called weight-loss pills, etc.  Most of them quickly regain any lost weight later on. Yet many obese people ignore or are unaware of the best method of losing weight: a medically-supervised program of dietary changes and increased activity.  Experience has shown that such programs work well for most people who want to attain a healthy weight.

For some extremely obese people, of course, things are too far advanced for a 100% lifestyle-based obesity therapy.  Fortunately, another option exists: weight loss surgery.

Weight Loss Surgery

Surgical weight loss procedures â?? also known as bariatric surgery — have been proven to help ease â??or even cure â?? many co-morbidities, which are health conditions related to obesity. It can also help those who are obese but have no co-morbidities to reach their ideal weight, and guard against future health complications.

The three main types of weight loss surgery are malabsorptive, restrictive and combination surgery, each with different risks and benefits. Malabsorptive procedures alter the patientâ??s intestinal tract, changing the way the body absorbs food; restrictive procedures (e.g., the Lap-band and vertical banded gastroplasty procedures) create a small pouch that limits the amount of food a person can eat; and combination procedures, like the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, create a small stomach pouch and alter the intestinal tract.

For those with morbid obesity, weight loss surgery can mean the difference between life and death. It is not, however, magic. Recovery from obesity is a whole-life process; patients who fail to alter their lifestyles after surgery may regain any weight lost.

Weight loss surgery is a serious step. The risks associated with these procedures are real, and should always be discussed beforehand in consultation with a physician.

Considering Surgical Weight Loss

Minnesota may be the fittest state in America â?? but it could become the fattest if we donâ??t change our relationship to food and by adopt healthier lifestyles. By working together we can keep Minnesota fit!

Skin is your largest and most visible organ since it covers the entire body. Having attractive, healthy skin starts from the inside and reflects on the outside. The first step towards taking proper care of your skin is to determine what type of skin you are in right now. The American Academy of Dermatology acknowledges several different types of skin. Your skin type can also change depending upon certain internal factors, such as health problems, hormonal imbalances or taking certain medications.

The following are guidelines to help you identify your particular kind of skin and choose products with all natural skin care ingredients that are suitable for it:

Normal: This type of skin is neither exceedingly dry or oily and usually has no blemishes or discolorations. Natural treatments include chamomile, cypress, camphor, rose, lavender, rosemary, sweet almond oil, grape seed and soy.

Dry: If you skin is flaky, ashy, and tight but lacking in elasticity, you have dry skin. Herbal remedies include orange, jasmine, carrot seed, avocado, calendula, rose hips and rice bran.

Oily: Skin that appears slick or shiny with enlarged pores is considered oily. A tissue rubbed against this skin will have oily residue on it from all areas of your face. Helpful herbs include lemongrass, peppermint, thyme, cedar wood, geranium, patchouli, hazelnut, olive and refined coconut oil.

Combination: If you have combination skin, your forehead, chin and nose are oily and there are dry patches near your hair and jaw lines. When you rub a tissue on your skin and only the “t-zone” areas around your forehead, nose and chin yield oily residue, then you surely have combination skin. Holistic solutions for combination skin include ylang ylang, rosewood, sweet orange, jojoba and apricot.

Acne-prone: Skin with enlarged pores that is disposed to clogging, blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and redness is acne-prone. Herbal remedies such as tea tree oil, manuka, basil, mint, grapefruit, coriander, lime, hazelnut and grape seed are often used for acne-prone skin.

Sensitive: This type of skin is often blotchy and prone to redness, rashes and irritation. Natural treatments with rose, jasmine, carrot, almond, sesame, calendula and jojoba have been effective and are usually non-irritating.

Water is another simple, all natural skin care solution for people with all types of skin to keep hydrated. Experts have found that healthy skin is promoted by consuming water equal to half of your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you would drink 75 ounces of water a day for maximum health benefits. Furthermore, the simplest and most effective skin care regime includes a using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen all year round.

By figuring out your individual skin type, you can incorporate all natural skin care products into a simple routine to enhance the health of your skin so that you can look and feel your best everyday.

Even though Chinese medicine has been used as an effective method for over 5,000 years, Western scientific proof continues to debate whether this is a logical method to help with healing. If you are interested in Chinese medicine, but are not certain of its effectiveness, you can look at the various research studies that have helped others to reach conclusions about its effectiveness.

The most debated science between East and West is the use of acupuncture as a medicine. At this point, the research studies have not led to any complete conclusions about whether acupuncture can be considered a science. At the same time, research indicates that the use of meridians in acupuncture is effective in healing. Scientists have also stated that because the treatment is harmless, it can be used, and simply needs to have more investigations related to it.

Another debate that has been studied by Western scientists is herbal medicines that are used from traditional Chinese medicine methods. While some of these have not been studied, other parts of the herbs are used in pharmaceutical medications that are prescribed to patients. Chinese wormwood, Ephedra, and artemisinin are some examples of ancient remedies that have moved into Western medicine from Chinese ideals.

Western Medicine – Western medicine has reached a high degree of technological advancement, and yet we have to admit that it has its drawbacks and limitations such as spiraling high-cost, limited access, side-effects, iatrogenic effects, etc. in working with chronic degenerative disease, lifestyle induced illness.Western medicines typically does not address the multitude of factors that often connect an individual to his or her condition.

Modern Drugs – Modern drugs often control the symptoms, but do not truly alter the body susceptibility to disease or sickness.Examples (a) antibiotics help eliminate the bacteria but they do not improve a person’s resistance to infection (b) diuretics rid excess fluid without improving inherent kidney function (c) allergy & heartburn medications may reduce the symptoms but also create a host of other side-effects and lastly, the high prevalence of depression in today’s society is certainly not from a lack of antidepressants in the diet.

Chinese Medicine – Chinese Medicine has a long history of over 4,000 years.Rather than treating symptoms as western medicine does, Chinese medicines focuses on strengthening your own vital energy (Chi) so that your body can heal itself. It’s true value is based in its power to enhance recuperative ability, immunity, and the capacity for pleasure, work, and creativity.

One of the shortcomings of Chinese Medicine is the lack of research in the area of toxins and heavy metals. This is because Chinese Medicine was established centuries ago when the world was not polluted by industrial waste or toxic chemicals. The lack of standardization in Chinese herbs and the possibility of toxicity present some of the major disadvantages in dealing with traditional Chinese herbs.

From the philosophy to the science, Chinese medication is a debated concept in Western society. However, there is also a growth and a beginning to understanding the concepts that have been used and experimented with over time. Through the various techniques of Chinese medicine to the continuous use by individuals who are looking for holistic health, Chinese medicine continues to become prominent in Western society.

â??There are so many things to do and so little timeâ? muttered Malhotra Uncle to himself, while talking to the decorators and instructing the servants, he was also thinking of a way to manage so many guests. To introduce, Mr. Malhotra is the father of the soon-to-be-bride Megha. With only 3 weeks to the wedding, things were very busy at Malhotra house.

Two hours later, the house was dead silent. Neighbors said, after asking Meghaâ??s mother for tea, Malhotra uncle just collapsed on the floor.

An Angioplasty and two weeks later, Megha was still getting married but the preparations had lost their charm. Malhotra Uncle had to take a loan as his entire budget of 5 lakhs saved all these years, was spent for the two stents for the blockages in his heart. Mr. Malhotra was heartbroken. Had he taken a health insurance cover, he would have felt the joy of spending his own hard earned money on the wedding.

Malhotra Uncle had his car covered, his life covered but he did not have his health coveredâ?¦.

Many of us like Malhotra Uncle realize the importance of health insurance but too late.

With the kind of advancement in technology, we could safely say that we would be treated for most diseases but it is also true that we could hardly recover from the financial implications that a single treatment can bringâ?¦

Health insurance saves you from the medical expenses that hospitalization brings. Health insurance can definitely relax you in the financial front if not the emotional. Thus, Health insurance is often â??the blessingâ?? when diseases occur.

More reasons to buy Health Insurance

High medical cost

In India Hospitals are charging exorbitant rates today, making them inaccessible to all. The Government hospitals are also not always available or convenient. There are very few options between Government hospitals and very expensive ones as the quality deteriorates everywhere else.

Given a choice, Healthcare for your family is one thing, where you donâ??t want to compromise on quality, irrespective of the cost involved.

Accidents

Bikes skidding, road rage, drunken drivingâ?¦ there are innumerable dangers that surround the basic journey from your home to your office. There is very little that is in your control when you are outside.

Here, Health Insurance gives you immediate solution to the cash problem faced during accidents by the Cashless service, where the basic hospitalization can be availed by showing the Health Card.

Diseases we are prone to

We all know, at least one relative who suffers from Diabetes, Hypertension or suffering from heart condition. Genetically too we are prone to these. With stressful lives and bad fitness levels, we are on our way to serious health problems.

Getting a health insurance when young ensures that these are covered at a later stage. Heath insurance is really a life saver when the treatments for such expensive diseases are covered. A bypass costs between 3-5 lakh, compare it with the small amount we pay annually to the company and you will realize that health insurance really is a boon. Obesity is a growing problem in our country and it seems that the smarter we get and the more technological and scientific advances we make, the worse the problem becomes. This doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it?

What is being done to prevent obesity? Clearly not enough. More than 65% of Americans are now considered overweight or obese. Many diseases that are leading killers in our society are preventable. That is correct. I am talking about diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and even certain types of cancer. The medical community has convinced the general public that treatments for these diseases are readily available instead of focusing on the prevention of them. Why? Because these treatments are what put money into the healthcare system, not the prevention of the disease itself.

One of the most startling statistics of all – 70% of all cancers are lifestyle related. They are not genetic or caused by environmental factors, they are lifestyle related which means if we would make changes to our lifestyles, the development of the cancer could be prevented. Read on to determine ways that you can make changes and prevent some life threatening illnesses as well as lower your health care costs!

PREVENTION AND HEALTHY HABITS

The hardest step to take is the first one. However, if you set a goal of creating healthier habits for you and your family, just like a goal of painting your family room, you will get it done. If you never plan for it, you will never make the changes. Goal setting is the first step to healthier habits. Healthier habits are the first step to prevention and prevention is the first step to saving health care dollars. Most of us are investing in some sort of a retirement fund. We think of places we want to go, things we want to do and things we want to see when we retire. We dream of the things we don’t have time for now. However, if we don’t take the steps to prevent obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and a host of other health issues, our retirement funds will end up being spent on medication and health care instead of traveling and enjoying life’s golden years.

Here are some keys that you can incorporate into your lifestyle starting today to make changes that can lengthen your life, improve the quality and keep some healthcare dollars in your pocket.

-Get Started Today. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzkey said that in his early years a coach once made a great impression by sharing these words of wisdom: “You miss 100% of the shots you never take”. This is so true and applies to just about any situation in life, including creating healthier habits. If you never make the choice to start, you will never incorporate the healthy habits. All it takes is making the choice and moving ahead one step at a time.

– Plan. It is that simple. We have all heard the old saying “failing to plan is planning to fail” and that applies here as well. You must have a plan of what you intend to do, how you want to incorporate healthier choices and then simply follow the plan.

– Know where you are. Get a benchmark of how healthy you are right now. In order to determine the progress you make, you need to know where you are right now.

– Know where you are going. Use a journal to track your progress. This will help you stay on track and on the days you feel like you aren’t making any progress, you can look back at the last 30 (60 or 90) days and see how far you have come.

– Be Patient. Change takes time and seeing progress is going to take time as well. Chances are you didn’t see the changes happening to your body overnight and it will take time to see the positive ones as well.

– Keep it fun! Trying to follow a plan that is too strict or regimented is a sure fire way to fail. Keep a fun attitude, involve family and friends and make your new habits something that you look forward to.

– Expect obstacles. Just as knowing where road construction is happening can get you to your destination more quickly, knowing that obstacles are going to appear on your path to creating healthier habits will help you plan for them and get back on the path to your goal faster. Holidays, birthdays, celebrations, parties, emotional situations such as death, divorce or loss of a job are all things that can get us off track. As long as you expect some obstacles and plan for them, you will be better equipped to handle them and move on.

– Sleep. Sleep is underestimated in the role it plays in good health. We think that staying up an extra hour or two to complete a task is the best way to be productive. Studies show that we are more likely to make poor eating choices or overeat when we are tired as well.

– Get support from friends and family. Engaging your network of friends and family is a great way to ensure your success. And, you might help them create some healthy habits along the way to add years to their life and life to their years! Accountability goes a long way in staying on track and creating a healthy lifestyle.

Your doctor can help keep you on track and monitor your progress. Doctors can also help you monitor things that you can’t see or monitor on your own such as cholesterol and sugar levels.

Around the world Yoga is considered an enjoyable way to keep fit and healthy. And, though it has been around for ages, only recently has Yoga caught the American fancy. It is a well-rounded workout designed to tone up and strengthen muscles; at the same time it increases flexibility. Yoga is also an excellent way to shed weight and boost energy and vitality. As you start to practise Yoga or Pilates, for that matter you will notice the need for some basic Yoga or Pilates equipment and accessories.

Yoga Mats

Good Yoga mats help increase balance and coordination. Most folks are not properly aligned. As a result we do a lot of what we do asymmetrically. For those intending to balance and a sense of symmetry a Yoga mat is a must. Then again, we strongly recommend a hand-woven Yoga mat. However, for those into dynamic and vigorous kinds such Power Yoga, Sticky Mats are well worth considering.

Yoga straps

The Yoga strap is highly beneficial for beginners. They are either fabricated from cotton or nylon and let you grasp your limbs, you couldn’t reach. They also help you hold a pose longer. Yoga Straps are especially helpful in bound poses when the hands cannot reach each other or for asanas where you need to hold both feet but cannot reach them.

Yoga blocks

Yoga blocks are also called Yoga bricks and are useful in executing a variety of Yoga poses. Yoga blocks help in execution of poses and offer many other benefits. Some of the benefits of Yoga blocks are that they provide stability and support for proper alignment; they also help reduce the distance between the body and the ground.

Yoga cushions

Yoga cushions help practitioners establish proper spinal alignment so that the posture stays steady, straight, and comfortable. Yoga Cushions are also beneficial to pregnant women and to people recovering from surgery. With Yoga cushions, most poses can be done comfortably as you sit on a chair or using a chair to maintain balance while standing. For added support or cushioning, Yoga Cushions are also used on top of a Yoga Mat or Yoga Chair height.

Yoga balls

Yoga Balls are a versatile prop for many postures. Fabricated from durable vinyl, they help achieve the necessary balance and support for asanas. Yoga Balls effectively increase your flexibility, improve your range of motion and balance, as well as tone up the muscles. Besides, they also help shape the body and relieve of stress.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are a number of risk factor

Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the cells of the breast in men and women. Worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer (10.4% of all cancer incidence, both sexes counted) and the fifth most common cause of cancer death.

Breast Cancer Causes

In breast cancer, some of the cells in your breast begin growing abnormally. These cells divide more rapidly than healthy cells do and may spread (metastasize) through your breast, to your lymph nodes or to other parts of your body

Women who start their periods early (early puberty) or have a late menopause have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer.

Women who are taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or have recently taken it, have a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. Detailed information about HRT.

Although the precise causes of breast cancer are unclear, we know what the main risk factors are. Still, most women considered at high risk for breast cancer do not get it, while many who do have no known risk factors.

Breast Cancer symptoms

Breast lumps in general

The first symptom of breast cancer for many women is a lump in their breast. But 9 out of 10 breast lumps (90%) are benign. That means they are not cancers. Most benign breast lumps are not cancers.

A lump or a thickening in the breast or in the armpit: Some lumps or swelling in the breast tissue may be due to hormonal changes. But if a lump or thickening persists, whether it is in the breast or in the armpit area, it may be a cause for concern.

Fluid (not milk) leaking from the nipple: Between ages 41 – 58, there may be a small bit of non-bloody leakage from the nipples of both breasts. This leakage is usually due to hormonal changes and is not worrisome.

Treatments of Breast Cancer

Surgery

Breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy), mastectomy, and lymph node dissection, and what to expect from each.

Building Long-Term Health

Why it’s so important to stick to your treatment plan, take the full course of medications, and continue with regular tests and doctors’ visits to keep yourself healthy into the future.

Tests on your cancer cells

Your breast cancer cells can be tested to see if they have hormone receptors’ or biological therapy receptors. There are oestrogen receptors and progesterone receptors.

Simple mastectomy. During a simple mastectomy, your surgeon removes all your breast tissue — the lobules, ducts, fatty tissue and skin, including the nipple and areola.

Reconstruction with a tissue flap. Known as a transverse rectus abdominal muscle (TRAM) flap, this surgery reconstructs your breast using tissue, including fat and muscle, from your abdomen, although surgeons.
