Breast cancer is the commonest form of cancer that occurs in women and, behind lung cancer, it is the second leading cause of cancer death among females. In 2004 some 186,772 new cases of breast cancer were reported by the American Cancer Society and this number would seem to be going up on a yearly basis.

It should also be noted that breast cancer is not confined solely to women and that some 1,815 men were also diagnosed with the disease in 2004 and that 362 men died of breast cancer that year.

Women’s breasts are complex structures consisting of glands, fat and connective fibrous tissue. They have several lobes which are split into lobules ending in the milk glands and there are also a large number of tiny ducts from the milk glands that connect together and end in the nipple.  

Eight out of ten breast cancer cases start in these ducts and this condition is called infiltrating ductal cancer. It is also relatively common for cancer to originate in the lobules where it is known as lobular cancer. Other types of cancer are known as inflammatory breast cancer.

Pre-cancerous changes (called ‘in situ’) are also common in women and are changes that have not yet spread from the area of the breast where they started. Where these changes take place within the ducts then the condition is known as ductal carcinoma in situ or DCIS and where they occur in the lobules they are called lobular carcinomas in situ or LCIS.

The most serious form of breast cancer is metastatic cancer which involves the spread of a cancer from its original site of growth. It commonly metastasizes into the lymph nodes under the arms or above the collarbone on the same side of the body as the cancer which leads to pain and swelling as the lymphatic drainage system is compromised. Other quite common sites for breast cancer metastasis include the liver, brain and bones.

Excluding the very obvious factor of gender, age is a critical factor when it comes to breast cancer. Despite the fact that breast cancer can appear at any age the risk of finding it certainly rises with age. A normal woman of 30 will usually have a 1 in 280 chance of getting breast cancer by the time she reaches 40. However, this then increases to a 1 in 70 chance when that same women is in her forties.  

Family history is also an important risk factor for breast cancer with the risk being particularly high when you have a close relative (like a mother or aunt) who has developed breast cancer at a young age.

Adam Federico is truly a Triple Threat in the beauty industry.  Heâ??s the owner/manager, Artistic Director, and head educator at the venerable AJF Salon in Sacramento. Adam also serves as the Creative Director at the third-generation, family-owned Federico Beauty Institute.

 

If Adamâ??s education track had been at a traditional, four-year college, he would certainly have earned his Masterâ??s Degree â?? perhaps a double Masterâ??s — by now. 

 

After graduating from beauty school â?? Federico Beauty Institute, of course!  â??  and earning his cosmetology license, Adam re-located to southern California for about three years to further advance the talents and skills needed to become a â??world-classâ? stylist in a high-end salon. Through a few, year-long Assistant Programs , Adam worked alongside first-rate beauty professionals learning creative and advanced techniques of cutting and coloring.  He also gained â??real-worldâ? experience in the retail aspect of the business, such as building a loyal client base and providing excellent customer service.

 

Adam returned to Sacramento from southern California in the late 90s and started teaching at the Institute.  AJF Salon soon opened in 2000, and despite the huge responsibility and time demands of starting a business, Adam continued to teach advanced haircutting and coloring techniques at the Institute.  These special advanced classes are not part of the Cosmetology curriculum, but extra-curricular and only open to the top eight (8) students at the time.  These students, who have completed their freshman classes, are selected for being in good standing at the Institute, as well as having good attendance and grades.

 

During this hectic period Adam found time to â??reap the rewardsâ? of the Assistant Programs where he clearly excelled.  From 2000-2005, he was a platform artist for Sebastian International, one of only 32 world artists, who traveled to Japan and France to represent Sebastian.

 

Another important aspect of Adamâ??s educator role is working with instructor trainees for a three-month period to ensure their skills meet the high standards required of educators hired by Federico Beauty Institute.

 

In his role as Creative Director at Federico Beauty Institute, Adam will soon form a student artistic team where he will help the team with conceptualizing seasonal collections, crafting hair shows and trend casting  –  â??whatâ??s in the futureâ? for hairstyles and beauty techniques.  

 

When asked if AJF Salon hires Federico Beauty Institute graduates, Adam enthusiastically responds, â??Thatâ??s all we hire!â?Â  All AJF stylists come fresh out of the school and follow a career path similar to Adamâ??s â?? they become Assistants â?? to Adam.  He estimates that â??in the past 10 years, about 98% of my stylists have been Federico Beauty Institute graduates.â?

 

Reviewing his busy schedule, Adam estimates that he spends 80% of his time managing the Salon and providing hairstyling services to his clientele.  He wears his â??educator hatâ? 20% of the time working with instructor trainees and students to ensure they are the best that they can be.

 

Adam reflects on what type of career he might have pursued if he hadnâ??t been born into

the third generation of a beauty industry family.  (Adamâ??s grandfather,  James Federico, founded the school in 1946). 

 

â??Growing upâ?, he says, â??my passion was music. I went to beauty school as a back-up career in case the music career didnâ??t work out.  After graduating from Federico, the beauty profession replaced music as my number one passion.   I know I would have done something in the creative arts â?? perhaps as a musician or a chef.  Definitely something that involved working with my hands.â?
