Issues

The Primary Health Care (PHC) strategy has proved to be a turning point in the history of health care policy. PHC was defined as â??essential health care based on practical, scientifically sound and socially acceptable methods and technology, made universally accessible to individuals and families in the community through their full participation and at a cost that the community and the country can afford to maintain at every stage of development in the spirit of self-reliance and self determinationâ?. PHC was expected to form an integral part of both the countryâ??s health system, of which it is the central function and main focus, and the overall social and economic development of the community. It would be the first level of contact of individuals, the family and community with the national health system, bringing health care as close as possible to where people work and live, and constitute the first element of a continuing health

care process.

PHC comprises eight elements:

ü      education concerning prevailing health problems and the methods of preventing and controlling them,

ü      promotion of food supply and proper nutrition,

ü      adequate supply of safe water and basic sanitation,

ü      maternal and child health care, including family planning,

ü      immunization against major infectious diseases,

ü      prevention and control of locally endemic diseases,

ü      appropriate treatment of common diseases and injuries, and

ü      provision of essential drugs.

The ideology and principles behind PHC closely match what was and has since been advocated in human development such as social justice, equity, human rights, universal access to services, giving priority to the most vulnerable and underprivileged, and community involvement. It is a recognized fact that the promotion and protection of the health of the people is essential to sustained economic and social development and contributes to better quality of life and to world peace. These prioritized PHC as the main strategy for achieving health for all. Despite this commitment and several years of work, not much has been achieved.

There is a need to examine the implementation of primary health care and identify strategic interventions needed to cope with the new challenges facing health systems, as a contribution to developing an agenda for strengthening PHC in the 21st century.

Key ISSUES that may need TO BE REVIEWED/addressed for strengthening PHCâ??s are:

ü      PHC policy formulation: How was the PHC policy formulated? What was the process of formulating PHC policy, the content of the PHC policy etc.

ü      PHC policy implementation: How are the PHC policies being implemented? Aspects to examine include advocacy and marketing, actors and partners, structures and processes etc..

ü      PHC resources: What resources are available for PHC implementation, for example human and financial resources, as well as PHC physical resources and structures?

ü      PHC monitoring and review: How are PHC policy and strategies being monitored and reviewed?

ü      Health trends: What are the trends of the main health and health-related challenges?

PROCESS

Data for the review to be obtained from the following sources:

ü      Unstructured interviews with interviewees/informants that have intimate knowledge of PHC implementation, such as policy makers, implementers at all levels, other sectors involved, WHO and other partners.

ü      Discussions with a wider audience of people who have intimate knowledge of PHC implementation. These included policy makers implementers, NGOs, private sector, health related institutions, WHO and other partners

ü      A desk analysis of available documents and reports specific to the country and extensive analysis of all available published and unpublished documents and materials.

The Sub-Centre is the most peripheral and first contact point between the primary health care system and the community.  Each Sub-Centre is manned by one Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) and one Male Health Worker MPW (M) (for details of staffing pattern, see Box 1).  One Lady Health Worker (LHV) is entrusted with the task of supervision of six Sub-Centres. Sub-Centres are assigned tasks relating to interpersonal communication in order to bring about behavioral change and provide services in relation to maternal and child health, family welfare, nutrition, immunization, diarrhea control and control of communicable diseases programmes.  The Sub-Centres are provided with basic drugs for minor ailments needed for taking care of essential health needs of men, women and children. The Department of Family Welfare is providing 100% Central assistance to all the Sub-Centres in the country since April 2002 in the form of salary of ANMs and LHVs, rent at the rate of Rs. 3000/- per annum and contingency at the rate of Rs. 3200/- per annum, in addition to drugs and equipment kits. The salary of the Male Worker is borne by the State Governments.  Under the Swap Scheme, the Government of India has taken over an additional 39554 Sub Centres from State Governments / Union Territories since April, 2002 in lieu of 5434 number of Rural Family Welfare Centres transferred to the State Governments / Union Territories. There are 146026 Sub Centres functioning in the country as on September, 2005 as compared to 142655 in September, 2004.

Primary Health Centres (PHCs)

PHC is the first contact point between village community and the Medical Officer. The PHCs were envisaged to provide an integrated curative and preventive health care to the rural population with emphasis on preventive and promotive aspects of health care. The PHCs are established and maintained by the State Governments under the Minimum Needs Programme (MNP)/ Basic Minimum Services Programme (BMS). At present, a PHC is manned by a Medical Officer supported by 14 paramedical and other staff.  It acts as a referral unit for 6 Sub Centres.  It has 4 – 6 beds for patients.  The activities of PHC involve curative, preventive, primitive and Family Welfare Services.  There are 23236 PHCs functioning as on September, 2005 in the country as compared to 23109 in September, 2004.

 Community Health Centres (CHCs)

CHCs are being established and maintained by the State Government under MNP/BMS programme . It is manned by four medical specialists i.e. Surgeon, Physician, Gynecologist and Pediatrician supported by 21 paramedical and other staff.  It has 30 in-door beds with one OT, X-ray, Labour Room and Laboratory facilities.  It serves as a referral centre for 4 PHCs and also provides facilities for obstetric care and specialist consultations. As on September, 2005, there are 3346 CHCs functioning in the country.

Are you thinking seriously about sexual health? The last thing we want to admit is that we’re not doing everything we could or should to protect ourselves from sexually transmitted diseases, sexual dysfunction or unwanted pregnancy. “I didn’t know” is never an excuse, so whether you’re 15 or 45, it’s time to give yourself a serious once-over and be sure you’re taking the right steps to live a healthy lifestyle.

Recent studies suggest that trust is a large factor in the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, and it’s not just teenagers who put too much blind faith in their partners. Adults need to take their sexual health more seriously, health experts say.

New research suggests that the number of sexually transmitted diseases has doubled in less than ten years for people over 45 years old. Approximately 45% of older adults with an STD suffered from genital warts specifically, and 1 in 5 had herpes.

Older adults are less likely to use condoms, which explains the 127% increase in incidences. Teenagers most commonly contract things like genital warts, HPV, chlamydia and gonorrhea. Some say the increased access to birth control and the ease of treatment for many STDs has led to a rise in teens having sex, while other health experts argue that our society has changed and teens will live dangerously regardless. At any rate, sexual health is contingent upon education; not just from a class at school, but from at home. Parents should heed their own advice as well.

Male and female sexual health plays a role in pregnancy. Reproductive health problems go beyond the ability to have a healthy, happy baby, and get right down to brass tacks and the sense of personal fulfillment in a relationship. Differing expectations or inability to perform can cause a partner to stray; thus, leading to divorce, or may create depression from continual disappointment.

There are many factors that influence reproductive health, such as age, lifestyle, genetics, habits, medication and environment. The good news is that many of the sexual problems adults face can be corrected.

As we age, sexual health becomes more and more important. For women, not only does the risk for cervical and breast cancer increase, but women also undergo “the change of life” with menopause in their fifties to sixties. For men, the risk of erectile dysfunction, testicular or prostate cancer and irritable bowel syndrome can increase.

“If I could highlight one significant change from over the past five years, it would be the greater willingness of midlife and older adults to discuss sex as a health issue with their health professionals,” said Linda Fisher, research director at AARP. A survey done by AARP reported that more people consult their health care professional about sexual health topics, more than twice as many men use performance enhancing drugs and more people feel that both sexual and overall health is a critical part of a good relationship.

Diabetes can be controlled effectively by taking exercise regularly and eating a healthy diet. The two main issues that need to be considered by anyone on a diabetic diet are sugar and fat intake. Constant weight monitoring is essential to prevent excessive weight gain as this can contribute to a number of problems.

Medication, Exercise and a Diabetic Diet

There is medical evidence that regular exercise can actually help prevent a person contracting diabetes as well as controlling it. The muscles in the body use up glucose during exercise, which leads to a reduction in the overall levels of sugar in the blood. The minimum recommended amount of exercise for it to be effective is 20 minutes taken three times a week. It is important to consult your medical practitioner before you take up a new form of exercise, especially if you have existing health problems apart from diabetes.

Exercise, on its own, is not sufficient to help control diabetes, which means that a diabetic diet should also be followed. Much of the advice that a dietician will give regarding a healthy diet applies to both diabetics and non-diabetics alike. The key is moderation in all things. However, a diabetic diet does have an emphasis on reducing the amount of sugary foods, especially cakes and cookies, and increasing the complex carbohydrate intake by eating more brown rice and whole-grain foods.

Medication is often not necessary to control diabetes as regular exercise and a diabetic diet is sufficiently effective. There are some diabetics for whom this is not enough and medication is needed. The majority of diabetic medications are taken orally. A diabetic may be prescribed one medication or a combination of different medications to properly control their diabetes.

The five main classifications of diabetic medication that may be prescribed are:

Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors
Biguanides
Meglitinides
Sulfonylureas
Thiazolidinediones

Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors

This group of diabetic medications slow down the rate at which sugar is absorbed in the digestive tract. However, it is rarely prescribed on its own as it has potentially serious side effects, including stomach and bowel problems.

Biguanides

Overweight diabetics are most likely to be prescribed this form of diabetic medication as it can help with controlling their weight as well as their diabetes. They cause the insulin to be used more effectively by the body than normal. Side effects are normally minor but can include nausea and diarrhoea. Biguanides can be prescribed on its own or combined with other medication.

Meglitinides

This types of diabetic medication is particularly effective for maintaining low blood sugar levels after eating, especially if a diabetic diet is being followed. The tablets are taken with food and have few, if any, side effects.

Sulfonylureas

By far the most frequently prescribed type of diabetes medication, this helps with insulin production in the body. Although there are few side effects for most people they cannot be taken by anyone with a sulpha medication allergy.

Thiazolidinediones

Perhaps the least used type of diabetic medication, this increases the sensitivity of cells to insulin. There are few or no known side effects with this form of medication.

The majority of diabetes can be controlled by taking one or more of the above oral medications. However, there may be cases where diabetics need to inject insulin. This is especially the case if the pancreas has ceased producing insulin completely as in Type 2 diabetes.

Effective diabetes management can usually be achieved by adhering to a sensible diabetic diet and exercise on a regular basis. In fact, this is often sufficient for most diabetics. It is important to consult with your medical practitioner on a regular basis and monitor your blood sugar levels. He can prescribe some of the many diabetic medications, if necessary. If you are in any doubt whatsoever regarding meal plans for a good diabetic diet or anything else related to your diabetes, you should always seek medical advice. However, the internet has a wealth of articles that you can read to keep yourself well informed about your condition.

Summary:

Exercise, on its own, is not sufficient to help control diabetes, which means that a diabetic diet should also be followed. Much of the advice that a dietician will give regarding a healthy diet applies to both diabetics and non-diabetics alike. The key is moderation in all things.

The men who I’ve talked to know very little about the prostate gland and its function. They do know, it’s not good news from the doctor if he says you have prostate cancer. The prostate gland supplies the semen with protection and nourishment. The prostate also starts to enlarge around the age of 40 years old in most men. Moreover, as the prostate starts to enlarge it begins to constrict the urethra compromising the urine flow and applies pressure to the bladder causing frequent urination. Around the age of 40 all men should take some form of all natural prostate enhancer.

Sexual Dysfunction

Through inactivity and a poor diet to name a few important blood vessels that lead to the sex organs become compromised in their duties. As a result, the sex organs functions maybe impeded or even in some cases completely shut down. There are a few methods that can be implemented to bring back a healthy sex life again.

Women nowadays suffer from various kinds of mental and physical issues that are mainly caused due to the high levels of stress and anxiety that they suffer from. It has been seen that women are usually prone to different kinds of health problems as compared to men because they are genetically different and their hormones and reproductive organs are usually the main sources of their trouble. The health of a woman is crucial because she is not only responsible for her own health but also has to bear a child.

Thus it is vital that women implement various steps to know more about women’s health and related issues so that they can take better care of their body and thus avoid and prevent these ailments and diseases. There are various kinds of physical and mental ailments that befall a woman and these deal with issues like breast cancer, diabetes and reproductive and birth control issues. It has been seen that most of these issues are critical and need immediate care.

It is vital for women to understand that that their body types and structure are not the same like men and hence taking care of their body the same way that men do is not going to help. One of the biggest issues that women have to face today is the problems of drinking and smoking. It has been that the consumption of alcohol in women has gone up drastically and this has resulted in various kinds of health problems and other related issues.

This is also one of the biggest causes of lung cancer and accidents in women because alcoholic drinks affect a woman much faster than a man. It has also been seen that smoking is unhealthy for women because they bear children and these smoking habits are hard to get rid of. As a result many chain smokers continue to smoke even when they are pregnant and this has an adverse effect on their health and body. Thus to avoid these problems women should also avoid smoking because it leads to various forms of cancer also.

There are various other kinds of women’s issues pertaining to their mental health and these include issues like anxiety, apprehension and mental ailments, which also includes annihilation. Various psychiatric have seen that these issues are more prevalent amongst the women in contrast to men and as per researches depression claims twice the number of women as opposed to men. Also the level of severity is more advanced in women and hence there are higher chances of deaths in women due to the same.

Studies and researches by medical practitioners also reveal that the level of stress is a major contributor to the overall transformation in the brain. This in return has the power to affect the overall mental health and thus women are prone to such kinds of diseases. Also the other major issues with women are heart diseases, which is contrary to the earlier belief that women don’t get heart diseases easily. Again the major contributors here are food habits, smoking and drinking, which claims more lives for women too.

Women also relieve their sexual frustrations by masturbating, just as men do. But in women, the mechanism of masturbation is more complex than in men. While men can achieve their orgasm just by applying a steady and strong pressure on the penis, women require a mental framework along with physical contact to reach their climax. In women, the touch is not the important part of the masturbation; the thought in their mind is. Also, male masturbation is a largely external process; but in women, masturbation is done by stimulating the internal genitals like the vaginal tract.

As already mentioned, there are various techniques of female masturbation. One of the most popular techniques women use is to arouse the clitoris. Women may begin with caressing their vulva and labia first; but gradually they will work their way to the little pea-sized pink organ known as the clitoris which lies between the folds of the labia. Women respond a lot to a rubbing kind of movement on the clitoris, which is generally done by the women with her first two fingers. The pressure and the rapidity of the strokes differ from women to women.

Since masturbation in women is an internal process, they can afford to be more adventurous than men. Though a woman produces enough lubricating fluids when fully aroused, some women would still apply lubricants such as KY Jelly or Vaseline. An external object in the vagina leads to an enhanced stimulation in most women. For this reason, women also experiment by inserting several objects shaped like the penis into the vagina. The list includes fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, gourds, bananas, radishes, etc. While putting any foreign objects such as these, it is necessary to lubricate the vagina more than its natural lubrication.

There are many sexual toys available to help women in masturbate. The most popular one is the dildo, which is a device shaped just like the human penis. This device could be mechanical or it could be battery operated. The idea is to insert the dildo into the vaginal tract to get a similar feeling as during penetrative sex. Advancements in the dildos have provided vibrators to them, due to which the pleasure it provides is greatly enhanced. Women use dildos even to stimulate their anuses. Thus, it can be said that the dildo is a versatile masturbatory device designed for women.

Positions adopted by women during masturbation also vary greatly. Most women prefer a sitting position with their legs stretched apart. This provides them easy access into the vaginal tract, and also facilitates a better stimulation of the clitoris. It also provides them with a comfortable posture. Women can also masturbate while lying down on a surface, but this is very inconvenient as the woman will need to stretch to reach out to her genitals. Standing postures are also employed. Some women rub their crotches against hard surfaces such as desks or kitchen stands and get themselves masturbated without having to touch their genitals.

It has been observed that in women, masturbation is more of a mentally aided process than a mere physical activity. Women need to be fully sexually aroused before they can achieve their full pleasure by masturbation. Women would love to have some music or to be able to look at something aesthetic like a painting or an erotic sculpture to masturbate, rather than looking at a nude male body. Several women can masturbate just by listening to some favorite music of theirs or by reading some erotic book, without even touching their genitals in actuality. It is possible for women to achieve masturbatory pleasure by just folding their legs and providing muscular pleasure within the masturbatory tract. For this reason, it can be said that in women masturbation is more of an intellectual activity than a sexual activity.

When it comes to a couple, then masturbation takes a different meaning altogether. Masturbation is very much useful in couples where the woman is pregnant and penetrative sex becomes cumbersome for that reason. When couples masturbate, it is called as mutual masturbation. This is usually preceded by foreplay. The male stimulates the genitals of the woman. He could begin by caressing the vulva, then the labia and finally reaching out to the clitoris. Rubbing the clitoris provides the woman with immense pleasure. At the same time, the woman can masturbate the penis and the scrotum of the male. Such mutual masturbation can also be employed when the couple does not want to have a baby or do not want to indulge in penetrative sex for some other reason.

Long since considered taboo, today women are becoming more open with their masturbation sessions and are even discussing that with their gynecologists. Doctors are in fact prescribing masturbation to some women in order to relieve themselves of their sexual frustrations especially when suffering from some diseases that make penetrative sex difficult. Masturbating women are at more peace of mind than women who indulge in penetrative sex with several men to douse their libidos.

For some peculiar reason, whenever I address a health issue and my male friends are present, the discussion is quickly redirected to another subject as they try to avoid the discussion. I recently encountered the same phenomenon and one of my friends responded that men are feeling guilty of making mistakes when it comes to their health. From forgetting to eat their daily fruit and veggies indulging in a hamburger of French fries, to scheduling an appointment with the doctor only when the symptoms they have been experiencing for weeks intensify, But although this can be partly explained due to societal standards that portray men to be strong and touch, this potentially life-threatening health negligence cannot be justified. Enduring pain and being able to overcome any type of problem they face does not seem as an adequate explanation for this type of problematic behavior. The truth is that men tend to view doctor’s visits as uncomfortable and involving potentially painful procedures and in general men are not capable of handling or enduring pain.

Health Issues in Men

Alcoholism is the consumption of alcoholic beverages to a point that this behavior impedes with the alcoholic’s normal life. The chronic alcohol consumption caused by alcoholism can result in psychological and physiological disorders.

Drinking alcohol is not always detrimental to health and in fact drinking in moderation can be good for you. Try to drink sensibly. Drinking 3 to 4 units (or less) a day for men is just fine. You should see to it that these daily limits shouldn’t exceed even if you only drink occasionally. A few days in a month without any alcohol can prove to be quite beneficial to your overall health, too. Health issues are always on the news these days and this is to educate a lot of people about their health especially their sexual health. Common men’s sexual health matters include prostate cancer, sexual transmitted disease or STD, AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. There’s also a problem about erectile dysfunction commonly known as impotence that is represents a serious issue for those couples that want to have a baby but then they are not blessed because of that illness.

Sometimes the erectile dysfunction from the medications is a side effect that goes away as the body adjusts to it. Other times the doctor is going to need to adjust the dosage or even try out new medications. Many males don’t want to share this problem with their doctor though so they just stop taking their medication. That is certainly not a good solution for any male who is having problems with sex due to medication conditions as well as their age. Low self esteem is a major problem for men with their overall physical appearance as they get older.

Premature ejaculation could very well be one of the most common problems plaguing the sexually active men of today’s world. It is the condition when the person ejaculates too soon, i.e. before the female partner reaches her climax. The male climax is obtained when there is the discharge of the seminal fluid from the penis during the sexual act. In men with premature ejaculation, this happens all too soon.

Naturally, one of the major problems with premature ejaculation is that is allows neither partner to enjoy the sexual act in a proper manner. The male is dissatisfied because he cannot hold out the pleasurable sensations of sexual contact for a longer period; and the female partner is satisfied because she doesn’t arrive at her sexual peak.

Though premature ejaculation is a condition when the male comes too soon, there is no limit as to how soon. That is to say, there is no fixed time limit before which it can be said that the man is suffering from premature ejaculation. An early definition of the case suggested that men who ejaculate within two minutes of the penetration are suffering from premature ejaculation; but this definition is now considered redundant because a staggering 50% of all men of the world – young and old – are known to ejaculate within this time frame, and in most of the cases the women are entirely satisfied.

The causes of premature ejaculation are too many to list completely. In young men who are trying out sex for the first time, there could be so much excitement that the discharge may occur too early. Sometimes, young men may be performing the sexual act secretly, and this would need them to ejaculate soon. This could become a habit in later life. The world over, premature ejaculation is found more in young men than in older men. Older men learn the tricks of the trade better and by exercising self-control, they are able to delay their ejaculations.

Men suffering from diseases such as diabetes also suffer from premature ejaculations, i.e. if they get an erection at all. Diabetes can make a man impotent. Mental stress and tensions also play a role in forcing the man to ejaculate before both the partners are fully aroused. Similarly, smokers are known to ejaculate prematurely while having sex. The usage of certain drugs – therapeutic as well as narcotic – can cause premature ejaculation in a person.

Since premature ejaculation is so widely rampant among males of today’s generation, there are also many suggestions available to rectify the situation. One of the important techniques used widely is the ‘squeeze’ technique. The male – or the female partner – arouses the penis by fondling it. When the discharge is just about to occur, the glans (i.e. head of the penis) is squeezed with the thumb and the forefinger. This avoids the semen from getting ejaculated, and the penis becomes limp as the blood gets disgorged out of it. After a minute or so, the penis is aroused again, and again squeezed when the man is about to ejaculate. Doing this a couple of times during each sexual act can increase the arousal value. Also when the male finally ejaculates, it will be a copious amount of semen.

All sexual experts emphasize the need of being totally stress-free when performing sex. When having sex, the person must concentrate just on the act and not on any worldly matters. By using mind-control, an experienced man can delay his ejaculation.

One more method is to masturbate just a few minutes before the sexual act. Masturbation relieves some of the sexual frustration. Also since an ejaculation has already occurred, the man will take a longer time to ejaculate when having sex with his female partner.

During the sexual act, more importance should be paid to foreplay. Foreplay means the arousal of the non-genital organs of the body, such as the nipples, earlobes, nape of the neck, thighs and basic contact with the skin itself. Prolong the penetration for as much time as possible and focus on other arousal centers of the body. Talking with the partner during sex is also a means to delay the actual ejaculation.

Alcohol was considered – and is still considered by some – to be a solution for premature ejaculation. The prime argument in its favor was that alcohol numbs the nerves, and so it can delay the ejaculation for some time. Now this is not true. Whether alcohol helps people with premature ejaculation or not, one fact stands and that is that alcohol is harmful for the basic health of the person. Hence one should be cautious what treatment he takes when sexual problems like premature ejaculation are concerned.

The most important thing about premature ejaculation is to remember that it is not a disease, but a dysfunction. So, no amount of medication can be used to ‘treat’ this condition. This is necessary advice for protection from quacks who swindle good sums of money from gullible young men. Just keep in mind that almost every man in the world feels that he has come too early in the sexual act, and that the act can be better if prolonged.

While there are many health issues that are universal concerns for men, women and children,

there are also a variety of health concerns that specifically to men and affect a man’s

overall health. Issues such as arthritis, heart disease, prostate cancer and other forms of

cancer, sexual health and vigor all comprise the top concerns men face today. And,

unfortunately, most, but not all, are age related.

As a man ages he is subject to several conditions that can affect his mortality. The most

common cause of morbidity in the aging man is cardiovascular disease, be it heart attack or

stroke.

The second leading cause of death is cancer, and we currently do not know exactly why. This

may be due to the oxidative stress that our bodies are under, and the inability of our diets

to provide us with enough antioxidants to combat these effects. This all get worse as we get

older, in particular, prostate cancer seems to be on the rise. The cause of this is

uncertain. Part of it may be related to improvements made in early diagnosis of the disease.

There is an obvious correlation with prostate cancer and aging.

Men suffer drastic hormonal changes as we get older, usually after the age of 35. Prostatic

enlargement known as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy) is becoming the fastest growing

health concern men face today. BPH is in large part related to hormonal changes that occur

with aging which relates to male hormonal function (androgens). Significant BPH can lead to

obstruction of urinary function and potential renal failure if untreated. BPH has been

reported in over 90% of men over the age of 85, although it is relatively uncommon before

the age of 35.

The incidence and prevalence of osteoarthritis increase as we age as well. Painful swollen

joints, caused by the deterioration of cartilage between bones occur, as well as decreased

pain free range of motion.

But, as we mentioned earlier, not all health issues are age related. Men, in their youth

and prime, are very active. Maintaining that level energy and vigor is of great concern to

men of all ages. A well rounded, nutritionally balanced diet is essential to a man’s

readiness and ability to perform well, on the field, court even in the bedroom.

It just makes sense that better nutrition consumption would results in better performance, and nutritional deficiencies can often result in poor performance, decreased endurance, early fatigue, or inability to perform to your optimal levels of activity.

maintaining adequate amounts of vitamins and antioxidants It is essential to optimal health and vitality. B vitamins help minimize the risk of heart disease and stroke by decreasing levels of homocysteine. Antioxidants are important to combat the diseases of aging, to minimize oxidation of cholesterol (which can lead to heart attack) and to maintain proper immune function.

Any active male should be very watchful of there dietary intake. The research shows that strenuous athletic activity and or exercise can and will rapidly deplete the essential nutrient your body needs to perform daily functions properly. IN these cases,

vitamins, minerals and other supplements may be necessary to help improve performance.

For some peculiar reason, whenever I address a health issue and my male friends are present, the discussion is quickly redirected to another subject as they try to avoid the discussion. I recently encountered the same phenomenon and one of my friends responded that men are feeling guilty of making mistakes when it comes to their health. From forgetting to eat their daily fruit and veggies indulging in a hamburger of French fries, to scheduling an appointment with the doctor only when the symptoms they have been experiencing for weeks intensify, men feel guilty for not taking care of their health and try to avoid any type of discussion that reminds them of that fact.

If you are familiar with the old story that men do not need to ask for street advice, as they can always find their way, they also generally tend not to seek out help when it comes to their health as they are always capable of surpassing the problem they have been facing and heal themselves. In fact, statistics reveal that women worry more about their health status than men do, and they take more preventative measures to protect it. After conducting my own focus group with some of my male friends, I discovered that this is totally true. Most of them avoid going for their regular check-ups, especially younger men, and decide to pay a visit to the doctor’s office only when something is broken, usually because a woman is present and insists that this is serious and should not be left to chance. Then it is only logical that men have, on average, a shorter life expectancy than women by six years.

But although this can be partly explained due to societal standards that portray men to be strong and touch, this potentially life-threatening health negligence cannot be justified. Enduring pain and being able to overcome any type of problem they face does not seem as an adequate explanation for this type of problematic behavior. The truth is that men tend to view doctor’s visits as uncomfortable and involving potentially painful procedures and in general men are not capable of handling or enduring pain. While women are biologically capable of handling the pains of a pregnancy they are also more open to discuss health issues and educated themselves regarding the threats associated with their health.

If one only considers the fact that the magazine’s and website’s focus is not on men’s health compared to the women’s health issues discussed, it is only logical to conclude that men’s health does not seem to be a priority either for men or for society. It is not that men do not get sick or are not experiencing signs of weakness from time to time; it is rather that their social role does not permit them to look or express that weakness.

Yeast infection in men, what you never thought about it. Then, one day you wake with one and it is everything you can imagine. Your entire day is with something you never thought could you pass deflected. Trying to ignore a penile yeast infection, it is nothing more than wishful thinking. They are, at least, to raise awareness with obvious itchy red spots on the very important addition made by himself. Often, you are reminded through the day, not only with itching, but with burning pain, as well.

After an attempt to deny that it happened to you, the thing that supposedly happened only with women, you have no other choice but to accept the reality of yeast infection in humans. To convince the seemingly endless hours of suffering, that penile yeast infection is a reality, despite the fact that it is a rare phenomenon.

“Can man get yeast infection?” is no longer a question in my head. In fact, it is no longer an issue for many men, tooand suffer personally, it is more serious than they imagine ever found. Yeast Infection in humans begins intensively researched and is a scientific fact. The disturbing and probably the most painful way is penile yeast infection. I think the majority would agree.

The symptoms of penile yeast infection include: rash-like bumps on the head of the penis, which can range from small red bumps into larger blisters and sores. This is the more common symptoms. Another symptom cana white discharge from the tip of the penis. A man can have one or two symptoms, depending on how the infection impact on his body.

Sometimes, when it comes to yeast infection in humans can, the symptoms of low. With only one or a few minor symptoms, a man can ignore and not try to appropriate treatment. Yeast as an internal matter, which is outward symptoms may not be the gravity of the situation that lead to a recurring yeast infection can. My recommendation is to seekTreatment for mild symptoms.

Here’s the shocker. Sometimes, when it comes to yeast infections in humans there are no symptoms. A man can have a penis yeast infection and not even know. This can lead to recurring yeast infection internally without the feeling that something is wrong. In some cases it may be too late for anything to be done about it. This can be very frightening.

What are the reasons behind Diabetes?

Much of our food which we eat is converted into glucose. To consume this glucose our body requires insulin. When lacking of insulin occurs, this glucose cannot be utilized properly by the body and diabetes occurs.

Why do symptoms occur in diabetes?

Diabetes symptoms occur because of storage of high blood sugar and less sugar utilization by the body parts.

Much harm can happen when blood sugar lies between 140 and 180 percent on long term basis. Also morning urine gives an average of all night’s urine. Blood sugar testing is therefore the best way to manage diabetes.

What is the most important number in diabetes?

Blood sugar testing gives blood level of sugar for that particular moment when the blood was taken for testing. A1C is another important test which gives an average of blood sugar readings over the past few months. A1C is even more important than a single blood sugar reading as it is to correlated with complications of diabetes in a patient.

Self esteem and weight loss constitute one of the main concerns of parents, teenagers and the general adult population. Often, the link if inextricable and many people go to great lengths to improve their outward, physical image.

The growing problem with obesity

The problem with obesity emerged even before the first World War, and has continually increased exponentially in many Western countries. People suffering from clinical obesity are getting younger and younger, and mortality rates are of course inversely affected. Sufferers of clinical obesity often suffer from a myriad of associate illnesses, such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and an increased risk of stroke and heart attack.

Self esteem and weight loss is not just about appearance. Society’s prejudgments may be harsh at best, but at the same time, it’s a good way of encouraging especially the young ones to keep their weight under control.

Teenage obesity

In the United States, the increased dependence of people on fast food has contributed significantly to teenage obesity. Children who have literally been brought up on take out food are more likely to overeat in their later years than children who were brought up on home-cooked, organic meals.

The fast food chains might be quick to dismiss such an accusation, but it is a proven fact that fast food contains twice or thrice as much fat and sugars than regular, cooked meals. Take out counters abound key cities in the United States, and with the kind of rush-hour lifestyle that many people practice, it’s no surprise that self esteem and weight loss continues to be significant.

Avoidance is key

We know that it’s hard not to depend on take out food, especially during lunch time and snack times. But there has to be a concerted effort to reduce such consumption because only then will the obesity rate go down. Also, the rise of uncontrolled consumption of chocolate, soda products and other junk foods have also contributed to the decade high statistics. There’s just no other way to do it; control has to be imposed on eating and inactivity.

Self esteem and weight loss will forever be intertwined issues- because society places a premium on those who look slim and fit. Society might not be fair many times in a person’s lifetime, but it’s best to take society’s advice with a grain of salt. If one is overweight, and there’s opportunity to remedy the condition, then it wouldn’t hurt to try.

There are many ways to start solving the problem. For teenagers, it seems that sports have a magnetic pull. But the question remains- what kind of sports, and how do you convince the Playstation generation to start moving?

An easy way to encourage children to begin sports is by showing complete support. Find a team, a good coach and help your child find a good set of sports buddies. Give your child a reason to want to continue playing a sport. Of course, it would be better if the child excels in the sport that he or she has chosen. Herein lies the role of the first and most important mediator- the parent.

As parents we inherently have a desire to keep our children healthy, safe, and happy. One of the earliest hurdles we encounter to our childrenâ??s well-being is the issue of getting baby to sleep through the night. You may not realize this, but by delaying this skill you could be setting your baby up for more serious health related issues during their childhood and into their adult life. By establishing healthy sleep habits now, you increase your childrenâ??s chances of bypassing these challenges.

Obesity

Studies conducted at many well known research centers have shown that there is a connection between childhood sleep deprivation and obesity. At the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, researchers found that for each extra hour of sleep a child got, it reduced their risk of being overweight by 9 percent!

In a Harvard study, results showed that infants who slept less than 12 hours total in a day were twice as likely to be overweight by the age of 3 versus infants who slept 12 hours or more in a day.

Emotional Issues

For babies and children the emotional effects of sleep deprivation can be more extreme than that of an adult. Some of the emotional issues a child can experience are high levels of anxiety, depression, aggression, irritability, temper tantrums, excessive crying and fussiness and decreased patience.

These issues go hand in hand with the next set of problems lack of sleep can cause in children.

Behavioral Issues

If a child is not getting adequate sleep they can begin to display a variety of behavioral issues such as hyperactivity, poor concentration, poor school performance, poor impulse control, reasoning and memory, focus and a drop in their IQ.

If these symptoms sound similar to those of ADD and ADHD, they are. Hereâ??s a fascinating scientific findâ?¦

Research in sleep laboratories have shown that many children have been misdiagnosed as having ADD/ADHD, when really all that was going on was chronic partial sleep deprivation!

In addition to the above, sleep deprivation in children suppresses their immune systems, increases their chances of injurious falls, and creates a vicious cycle of poor sleep habits that are hard to break the longer they go on.

Both men and women are called upon to be care givers when loved ones are diagnosed with cancer, and both suffer the same psychological and emotional distress. Both need the embrace of a caring support network. But do both react similarly in similar situations?

When we envision the caregiver of a seriously ill family member we usually conjure up the image of a woman. This is not sexist bias. Both men and women think the same way in this regard. It’s a statistical reality. More women than men are found in the role of caregivers. Why?

In most marriages, the husband is older than his wife. Couple this statistic with the fact that women, on average, live longer than men. It is also statistically true that a man’s working environment is often more physically demanding and inherently dangerous that of women, even when working outside the home. This statistics describe a situation where the probability of accident and the normal ravages of age inflict the husband first, leaving his wife in the role of caretaker. Regarding cancer specifically, statistics infer that men are more likely than women to pursue lifestyle behaviors, such as smoking, misuse of alcohol, and poor diet that place them at greater risk of getting cancer, but statistics is a tricky discipline.

Even though our tendency to envision women as caregivers is supported by statistics that place male caretakers in the minority, it is in reality a sizable minority. Recorded incidences of cancer in women may be slightly lower internationally than that recorded in men, but the numbers are not that far apart. Actual numbers indicate that there a sizeable number of men that find themselves in the role of carer for a spouse or loved one fighting cancer. To what degree they are involved, however, is another matter.

Although employment demographics are now rapidly changing to reflect more equal opportunities for men and women in professional and higher paid employment, men have traditionally provided a larger part of family income. For either man or woman, where income or financial resources are sufficient, the caregiver may continue with a job or career and arrange for third parties to provide the day-to-day care necessary for the loved one. (Interesting to note is that these third parties, whether family members or hired professional caregivers are most often women.)

Others, less fortunate, may need to juggle many balls trying to provide both income and care. In all cases, however, the caregiver will benefit from the emotional support of a network of friends or from outside support groups. The question is, “Is a man as likely as a woman to seek out or accept outside guidance and emotional support as a woman would?”

According to a report from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, funded by the United States National Institute of Health, men, whether they have cancer or are the care giver, are less likely than women to join a live support group. Those that do, both men and women, attend for about one year before leaving the group. Both men and women attend for the same reason: to seek information about the disease, and to compare progress with others.

A recent trend is discussed in a paper by Tamar Ginossar, called Exploring Participation in Cancer-Related Virtual Communities, presented at the 2008 annual meeting of the International Communication Association in New York. Increasing numbers of men and women are using technology and turning to virtual internet-based support groups for emotional and informational support regarding cancer. It is interesting to note that while both sexes exchanged emails to share information about their respective types of cancer, men were less likely to post messages of encouragement and support than women. One can infer from this that men are drawn to virtual support groups to share important information and experience while emotionally isolating themselves from other group members.

Custom, tradition, culture; all have contributed to the go?it?alone, stiff?upper?lip comportment of many men when facing emotionally difficult challenges, including the impact of caring for a loved one with cancer. Hopefully, as our culture moves more and more toward equality of the sexes in personal, professional, and social relationships, men will find it easier to recognize and accept the intimacy and help that can be received from support groups, as they face the tribulations of caring for a loved one with cancer.

Caring for a loved one with cancer can be physically and psychologically exhausting. Sharing concerns and frustrations with others in an understanding support group of similar cancer hosts and caregivers can help markedly. Women seem to gravitate naturally to this type of support; men are more reluctant. It is important for all caregivers, men and women, to seek out and accept the help of a support network.
