“The People” have had enough apparently!

An “insider” revealed today that the “World of Medicine” is scamming people – and even worse: with the help of “law-makers!”

It seems that “money” (as usual) has blinded doctors and medical practitioners to the degree that they are now willingly *suppressing* the truth regarding Heart Disease – its control, management, and even its cure!

That’s right: “cure!”

And what should shock you even more:

It seems that it’s against the law to say the word “cure” when describing anything that actually cures you.

Yet it’s very much okay to say that something “treats” or helps “offset” the symptoms of some health condition or disease.

But if you say “cure” (and even including when you in fact have a real and bona fide cure for something and can even prove it!) you can get arrested.

Ever wonder why we have a “healthcare” industry and not a “healthcure” industry?

It’s simply because no one’s out to “cure” anyone because there’s little money in doing so.

Instead, keeping you sick and marginally pain-free is all anyone’s really out to do for you these days – as doing so means you being “forced” to buy all the same drugs over and over again, and again, and … (you get the point!)

Of course, if a cure came along it would mean you buy it one time, and then you’re cured – and that’s that (over and done!)

But a number of doctors, philanthropists, and just plain old “good folks” armed with “real answers” and “real solutions” are stepping up and are NOT afraid of “Uncle Big-Bully Brother!”

One courageous fellow by the name of Melford Bibens, CPT, is doing exactly this, as he’s helped others overcame “naturally” the condition known as “Heart Disease!”

Not only that, but Melford has lectured and personally helped individuals beat the disease to the point that proven sufferers have actually gotten re-diagnoses as “no longer having the disease at all!” (Something that’s pretty much always been ruled out as a possibility altogether! – and now which may even be against the law!)

But it’s not certain how long Melford will be allowed to do this because “Uncle Sambo” has actually started using “Gestapo” tactics whereby people and businesses truly offering “cures” have been raided with masked armed police who even go to the point of forcing customers in the stores to get down on the floor at gunpoint!

There are many causes of benign breast cancer. These are the changes in the breast tissue, any breast infection or injury, and any medicine that are taken that have caused the lumps or the breast pain. Changes in the tissues of a woman’s breasts occur with the fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone during the menstrual cycle.

Types of Benign Breast Conditions

There are many types of lumps and conditions in the breast that are benign and it is very important to know them so that you will not have to be unnecessarily alarmed when you find a lump in one or both of your breasts.

    * Fibrocystic changes. This increases the size and tenderness in the breast before the menstrual period. These lumps are just milk ducts and surrounding tissues that have grown and dilated to form cysts. The lumps that are formed may be hard or rubbery. Fibrocystic changes are often noticeable among women in their 40s.
    * Simple cysts. These are just fluid filled cysts that change in size with the woman’s menstrual cycles.
    * Fibroademonas. These are considered the most common benign tumors in a female breast. They are solid, round, and rubbery, and they can move freely in the breast once they are pushed upon and it is usually painless. This type of benign breast condition is due to the excessive formation of the milk producing glands and the surrounding breast tissue. This condition will most likely occur in women between the age of 20 and 30.
    * Intraductal papillomas. This condition is characterized by small, wart-like growths in the lining of the mammary duct near the nipple area and women between the age of 45 and 50 are the most likely to be affected.
    * Traumatic fatnecrosis. This condition will occur if a trauma like an injury occurs in the breast and the characteristics of the lumps are round, firm, hard, single, and usually painless.

What You Should Do If You Find A Lump

Once you discover a lump in your breast you should immediately see a physician because it might be a benign breast cancer condition. It is recommended to see a doctor right away if you find the following in your breasts:

    * An area that is distinctly different from another area in either breasts
    * A lump or a thickening near the breast or the underarm that is persistent
    * A change in the size, shape, and contour of the breast
    * A mass or lump in your breast
    * Changes in the feel or appearance of the skin on the breast or the nipple.
    * They are dimpled, puckered, and appear scaly or even inflamed.
    * A bloody or clear fluid discharge from the nipples
    * Redness in the skin on the nipple area or anywhere on the breast

A monthly examination of the breast is recommended to detect any abnormalities that are found in the breast and to prevent any development of benign breast lumps.

A prevalent phenomenon in today’s world is the existence of weight loss businesses such as Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. Are these good for the average person? Or, are they a complete waste of money, resulting only in a return to obesity shortly after stopping with them?

The writer generally believes that one can do for oneself what Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig can do. Therefore one should simply use one’s own head without contracting with others. But, that opinion is perhaps too obtuse and unrealistic for the person just starting out on a physically transforming lifestyle.

Making a new year’s resolve to drop fifty pounds, thereby looking great for this year’s upcoming Christmas is hard. It takes a lot of effort to refuse the food you probably love and feel you cannot really live without. It also takes a lot of courage to simply do your daily workouts. Simply sticking with it may almost take all of your emotional time and energy.

If that is true for you, you may not be as able to wisely choose what you should eat for energy and tissue repair. Jenny Craig and Weight watchers do a good job of telling you what to do in these areas. They can even send you individual meals if you would like. Having your diet on that kind of cruise control can free your mind to stay on track with your workout routine.

Places like Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers will also encourage you. Largely, this is because your success is the best advertising for them. But it’s also because many of those who work for them have been overweight as well.Consequently, they will know what you are going through and will be able to encourage you in a way that will not damage your pride.

You need nutritional and emotional support of this nature. Too few of us get these from home, where we may even have spouses who are against our weight loss aspirations. Granted, they may not be openly antagonistic, but the threat of a physical transformation may actually cause some resistance in them. That can result in them not helping with the dietary changes that are necessary. Sad to say this may even be the case in spite of your MD saying that you simply must drop the weight to avoid more serious future problems such as diabetes.

Should you try one of these big chains to help you win the losing game? Yes, if you need them as many of us do. The only warning is that their diets may not be enough if you are also on a strenuous bicycle or running program. In that case you might want to at least tell them beforehand or consider supplementing with controlled amounts of extra calories from things like honey or olive oil.

Controlling your weight and avoiding weight gain as you get older are important ways to prevent a host of weight-related health problems.

Indeed, if you are more than 20 pounds over your ideal weight, you are at greater risk for a rogues gallery of potentially deadly conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, endometrial cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, and breast cancer.

What is more, most people who are overweight tend to avoid exercise, and that avoidance just adds to the toll paid for extra pounds.

If you have a sedentary lifestyle and are overweight, you are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and other health problems. And, if you already have a medical condition such as high cholesterol, being overweight puts you at higher risk for complications.

The good news is that even modest amounts of weight loss can improve your health significantly. Loss of 10% of body weight can reduce blood pressure, high cholesterol, , and high blood sugar levels.

Today, there are many procedures that can contribute and help people loss weight effectively. One of the known procedures in losing weight is through hypnosis.

However, many misconceptions have come up with regards to the application of hypnosis in losing weight. And because it does not involve drugs or any kinds of medications and surgery, many people tend to think that losing weight through hypnosis seems to be one of the safest weight loss programs.

To know more about hypnosis and its effects on losing weight, here is a list of some facts that will give you an insight about what it can do to your body weight.

1. Hypnosis can be an imminently risky if not done properly and not utilize by people who are highly trained with the real concept of hypnosis.

Even if many people tend to think that hypnosis will not pose imminent danger to their health, still, it is important to know that the person who will do the procedure is skilled enough and that he or she knows what factors to consider before doing the procedures.

2. Hypnosis alone cannot eliminate excess fat from the body and, therefore, make somebody lose weight.

Most health experts contend that hypnosis should only be a part of a whole assimilated process. It should never be used as the sole weight loss procedure.

Moreover, one session of hypnosis will only have very minimal results on an individuals weight. When losing weight, hypnosis matched with psychotherapy will be more effective than hypnosis alone. This is because hypnosis is only a state of deeply relaxing the mind, in which one can still be in control of his or her own body.

3. Hypnosis is one way of getting into the subliminal state of a person. When a person is on the hypnotic stage, the body is more responsive to suggestibility because of its intensified state of concentration.

However, this does not necessarily mean that through hypnosis, one can already reprogram the mind of an individual.

In reality, hypnosis can only run the range from trouble-free relaxation condition to proper initiation managed by a professional hypnotist. Hence, it should not be considered paranormal and magical in its upshots.

Boiled down, people should be more aware that hypnosis is not a sole effective process in losing weight. It is more of a facilitator of various treatment techniques.

Therefore, it should be combined with other weight loss management program to be effective in making people lose excess weight. In this manner, people will be able to lose more weight with a more relaxed and refreshed state of mind.

As they say, a healthy mind is a healthy body.

Cervical cancer is known to develop on the lower area of the uterus, which is known as the cervix. In the United States, cervical carcinoma or cervical cancer is regarded as the third most prevalent gynecologic cancer among women of all ages. However, it is known to be the most common among those in their twenties. This type of gynecologic cancer is known to usually affect women who are aged 35 to 55 years old.

The Cause

The cancer of the cervix is typically caused by the human papillomavirus or HPV, and the transmission of this virus is through sexual intercourse. The younger the age of a woman when she first had sex and the number of sexual partners she had would increase the risk for cervical cancer. The risk for acquiring the illness would also escalate if sexual intercourse is done with men who had previous sexual partners also having cervical cancer. A weakened immune system and smoking cigarettes are also other risks for the development of the cancer of the cervix.

The Symptoms

The precancerous changes that could lead to cervical cancer will typically bring no symptoms at all. During its early stages, cervical cancer may bring no symptoms or may cause abnormal vaginal bleeding, usually after sexual intercourse. Spotting or bleeding that is heavier than normal could also happen in between menstrual periods or heavier periods than normal may also be experienced. Large cancers in the cervix have the tendency to cause bleeding and may also cause vaginal discharge that has a foul smell. Pain on the pelvic area can be experienced with cervical cancer as well.

Swollen legs as well as lower back pain could also be caused if the cervical cancer has already spread to the other parts of the female reproductive system and the other nearby organs. As this could block the urinary tract, kidney failure may happen without proper treatment, thus leading to death.

The Diagnosis

Regular Pap smear examinations and other such tests are known to detect the early signs of cervical cancer. In fact, Pap tests are known for as much as 90 percent accurate detection of cancer of the cervix, even before symptoms begin to develop. These tests could even detect dysplasia, which when treated could aid in the prevention of cancer.

If a Pap test is able to detect dysplasia or cancer cells or if a sore, an abnormal area, or a growth is noted during a pelvic examination of the cervix, then a biopsy would have to be performed. This will confirm or rule out cervical cancer.

The Treatment

The treatment for cervical cancer would depend on its stage. Those who are still experiencing the early stage of the cancer could undergo the removal of an area of the cervix. However, because cancer is known to be recurring, women who go through this are advised to return for regular Pap tests and examinations that would need to be as often as after every three months during the first year and then after every six months after this. In more advanced stages of the cervical cancer, hysterectomy as well as radiation therapy or chemotherapy would already be called for.

The Prevention Method

If you want to avoid getting cervical cancer, then it is very important that you subject yourself to periodic Pap tests and pelvic examinations. It would also be best if you get the newly developed HPV vaccine. However, you should keep in mind that this vaccine will only prevent cervical cancer and will not cure it.

We have heard so many times that the way to lose weight is to limit our calories, fats, and carbohydrates. The bad fats are saturated and trans fats. The good fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats along with omega-3 fatty acids. If we eat too many bad fats we can be at risk for some diseases. While the good fats lower this risk. As weird as it may sound, our body needs some fat to work.

The good fats lower the bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol. Good fats can be found in a number of healthy foods. Monounsaturated fats are in nuts, avocado, olive and canola oils. Polyunsaturated fats are in salmon, corn oil. Saturated and trans fats raise your bad cholesterol. These are mainly found in animal products. Trans fats are found in commercially packaged foods.

How can we lower our bad fat intake and raise our good fat intake? When you use cooking oils use ones that are low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat; canola oil and olive oil are good alternatives. Even though saturated fats are found in animal products use low-fat dairy products and trim the fat and skin off meats. Also, by avoiding commercially packaged foods you can avoid trans fats.

We need the good fats in our diet. There are actually many health benefits. It has been recommended that we eat 7-10% of our calories in fat. We get important fatty acids, like omega-3 fatty acids which are found in fish, from the good fats. It is hard to get all of the omega-3 fatty acids your body needs from diet alone, taking a good supplement that include essential fatty acids is a good way of getting the proper amount. It is also important to take a sustained amount of omega-3 supplement, because it takes weeks for the tissues in your body to absorb the fatty acids.

The good fats also keep our skin soft, give us energy, and most importantly deliver fat-soluble vitamins. The fat-soluble vitamins include Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K. These vitamins help your immune system, give you good eye sight, help build strong bones, and make sure when you are cut that you don’t bleed to death. Fat-soluble vitamins stay in your system until they are needed. Along with getting these important vitamins from foods, you can get them from a good multivitamin. Multivitamins give us the vitamins and minerals our bodies need that we don’t get from our foods. Essentially it fills in the gaps.

The best way of making sure you eat the good fats and avoid the bad fats is to read the nutritional label on the food. Look at the total fat on the label. Make sure it is low. The amounts of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated, and trans fats. By reading the label you can make sure you are cooking with the good fats and leaving out the bad fats. Here are three tips to cooking with the good fats. When you use cooking oils, use nonstick cooking sprays, and canola or olive oils. Also when you are cooking meat with fat on it, trim the fat off and grill or bake your meats. If the recipe calls for coating the meat use breadcrumbs and bake it.

Keeping the good fats and kicking out the bad fats will help your body to absorb essential fat-soluble vitamins found in our food and in multivitamins.

When the Wii Fit, the Nintendo video game, told me my ‘fit age’ was 41 – a decade older than I actually am – I took it personally. After all, I run 32km a week and weight train twice a week. As I stood on its wireless balance board, Wii Fit gauged my BMI and had me perform stability tests. Though I was slightly underweight, my balance scores were apparently pathetic enough to age me. So I tackled Wii’s fitness games for a week. Here’s what I learned.

Balance

The Routine

Four initial exercises; five advanced available.

Best For

Improving posture and overall body alignment.

Pros

Heading soccer balls, walking on a side and lean forward slightly. My balance scores shot up after a half hour of practice.

Cons

While the games kept me entertained for a week, I imagine I’d soon be sick of them and the post-workout evaluations by the virtual trainer who has a revolving script of tiresome one-liners.

Yoga

The Routine

Four poses initially. Master these, and 11 more are ‘unlocked.’

Best For

Stretching slackers.

Pros

My tight hamstrings could certainly benefit from yoga, if I had the time and courage. With the Wii, I was able to confidently work on my poses in private. And because the four-pose routine lasted only 10 minutes, I did it five days a week.

Cons

My den isn’t exactly Zen, so it was easy to get distracted. And I have to think doing Warrior I with one leg elevated on the board would appall yoga traditionalists. After a week, I was bored with the same poses – and you do them one at a time, without the flow of a normal yoga routine.

Cardio

The Routine

Choose from nine workouts, lasting up to 30 minutes.

Best For

Cross-training.

Pros

Of the games (jogging, dancing, step aerobics, etc.), boxing was my favorite. I burned some calories – and some steam.

Cons

Running in place in front of my TV was torture. I could never stand it long enough to get in any semblance of a legit training run.

Strength

The Routine

Five initial exercises; 10 advanced available.

Best For

Starting a strength-training routine.

Pros

This category has the best variety of activities, ranging from push-ups to lunges.

Cons

Wii sends you back to the main menu after doing only one set when I could’ve easily banged out two or three sets. And it’s a far cry from a living, breathing trainer. The Wii gives you the basics, but it’s not customized to your individual needs – especially if you have injury issues.

If you’ve noticed the news, Type 2 Diabetes is on the rise in the USA, and around the world, for both kids and adults. If you don’t have it, it’s not too late to take steps to prevent it. And if you already have it, there’s a new way to help manage it. Studies have proven the earlier you tackle any blood sugar problems, the better your chances are for success. It has also been made clear that losing excess weight can help ward off diabetes. If you could lose weight without being hungry, and if you could eat something that tasted however you wanted it to, would you do it?

Who wouldn’t answer ‘yes’ to that?
You don’t have to change your habits or start taking expensive pills. All you need are Chia Seeds. The Chia Seed, while not well known, is actually a Superfood. It was lost for centuries, ever since the ancient Aztecs used its super-nutrition for their armies. With the ability to keep people feeling full, and being 23% protein by weight, it isn’t any wonder they were able to conquer so many lands. Every tiny seed was a powerhouse of nutrition, vitamins and essential omega-3 oils.

How easy is it to use?
Chia Seeds are actually one of the easiest things you can possibly add to your diet. It’s as simple as sprinkling them onto anything you already like to eat or drink. Chia Seeds don’t have a flavor of their own. Instead, they distribute the flavors of food or drink that you add them to. This property lets them take on the taste of that food, or amplify the flavor of liquids. (Meaning when you cook with them, the food will actually taste better!)
For example, you could sprinkle them onto: breakfast cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, ice cream, juice, milk, pizza, salad dressing, pasta, sandwiches….really, anything that’s moist enough to get the seeds to stick to the surface…and you stay full much longer, from eating much less food!

It seems far fetched, how can little seeds do all that and more?

Get ready for a double shot of weight-loss benefits:
First: Chia Seeds help you feel full longer, and you can actually watch the process work! Diet pills may ask you to believe they work, but MySeeds Chia shows you. If you take 1 tablespoon-full of Chia and add it to 9 tablespoons  of water, stir, and wait 15 minutes, you’ll see that each seed has formed a big bead of gel on the surface and the water is now thick like a gelatin. Notice how much larger this solid form is? This is what happens when you eat the seeds. The gel won’t come off the seed easily, and is made of pure water. This feels like food in the stomach, but replaces calories with water (which has 0 calories)

Second: Chia is a fiber-rich seed. It has soluble and insoluble fiber. In fact, you can literally SEE the fiber of the Chia Seed in action, if you place it in liquid. (it will form a big bead of gel around the seed) Fiber-rich foods are processed more slowly by the body. This is a great benefit if you’re trying to lose weight without starving! When foods process more slowly, you feel ‘satisfied’ or ‘full’ much faster than normal. This makes it easy to eat less at mealtime.

By packing in fiber, the food you eat is less calorically dense. The fiber fills you up, and performs its important roles in the colon, but ISNT absorbed by the body to turn into extra calories and fat. Insoluble fiber is not digested. It is sometimes called ‘roughage’ and helps to clean the colon.

But what about glucose? Glucose and insulin levels are important for preventing type-2 diabetes. Starchy foods, sugary drinks, and other modern-day diet options that convert quickly into sugars in the body spike insulin levels. You can give your system a break with fiber. Viscous fiber (that which appears like a gelatin) slows down the conversion of carbohydrates into sugars and helps normalize blood glucose levels. That means it’s beneficial to mix Chia Seed in with food you already like to eat.

Blood sugar naturally rises and falls through out the day. It can also be what makes you drowsy in the afternoon. Dips and spikes aren’t good for consistent, healthy energy. The slowing of conversion of carbohydrates into sugar has the ability to create endurance. Carbohydrates are the fuel for energy in the body. Prolonging their conversion into sugar stabilizes metabolic changes, diminishing the surges of highs and lows creating a longer duration in their fueling effects. Protein fuels energy as well, and the protein in chia is complete. Once again, a double benefit for you.

With Chia Seeds you can deal a powerful 1-2 punch against Type-2 Diabetes risk-factors: excess weight and insulin spiking foods. Of course, there are many other benefits to Chia as well, such as healthy omega-3 oils, micro-nutrients, a full range of b-vitamins and more calcium by weight than milk. If you already have Type-2 Diabetes, it’s important to watch your blood-sugar closely and ask your doctor about adding Chia Seeds to your diet. If you don’t have this problem, it’s not too late to stop it from ever hitting you. If you have risk factors, or, if you’re just looking for a way to feel better every day, and improve your health, you need to take action right away. You need Chia Seeds!

Colon cancer or colorectal cancer is a disease characterized by the development of malignant cells in the lining of the first and longest portion of the large intestine. These cells have lost the normal control mechanism for growth. It is also termed as colorectal cancer because in time it can affect the rectum too. The rectum is the continuation of the large intestine into the pelvis that terminates in the anus.

The Causes and Symptoms

Primarily, there are two causes of colon cancer: the sporadic case and the genetic case. Exposure to the carcinogenic agents in the environment constitutes the sporadic case. It can induce mutation, and in time, it can also turn into a cancer. Specific carcinogens for colon cancer are still unidentified, but they can be narrowed down to the dietary factors of the person. Some of the probable causes of colon cancer include:

          1) Diets that are high in fat and alcohol can predispose people to this disease.
          2) Age and smoking habits of the person. A person over the age of 50 is more likely to have the disease than those who are under 50. Smoking individuals have risks too.
          3) Patients who suffer from inflammatory diseases of the colon like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s colitis also have increased risks.
          4) Genetics like familial cases are also factors that help spread the disease.

Symptoms of colon cancer are related to the release of bowel and wastes of the affected person. They may occur alone or in combination. These symptoms are as follows:

          1) Change in the bowel habit of the affected person
          2) Blood in the stool
          3) Bloating or persistent abdominal distention
          4) Constant constipation
          5) Feeling of fullness after just having a bowel movement
          6) Presence of ribbon stools
          7) Persistent and chronic fatigue and anemia
          8) Abdominal discomfort
          9) Unexplained weight loss, resulting from a systemic disease
         10) Nausea and vomiting, which can occur rarely

 The Treatments Available

Treatment of the colon cancer first depends on the stage of the cancer. It can be curable when caught at an early stage, but if detected at later stages, when metastases are present, it is less likely to be curable. Up until now, surgery is still the primary treatment of colon cancer. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy or the combination of both may be recommended on the patient, depending on their cancer’s stage and other medical factors. It can also be a challenge to determine how aggressive the treatment for the patient is because this type of cancer primarily affects the elderly; it is rare for young people to develop this disease. Some elderly people are not recommended for chemotherapy after the surgery because it can have ill effects on their health.

These are among the summarized treatments of colon cancer that are practiced today:

          1) Surgery in the colon area
          2) Chemotherapy
          3) Radiation therapy
          4) Immunotherapy
          5) Vaccine for colon cancer
          6) Treatment of liver metastases that can spread to the colon area
          7) Support therapies

Feans’ Facial Cleanser formula includes three alpha hydroxyl acids; lactic acid from (vegan) milk, malic acid from apples and glycolic acid from sugar cane which help remove dirt and extra oils from the skin . This men’s face wash prepares your skin for the use of a men’s shave cream by making the surface of your skin smooth. It cleanses your skin deeply and removes the dirt as well as dead skin cells so that your shave is less irritating. Since your razor can get closer to your skin the probability of razor burn is much lower. Using a men’s face wash on a regular basis also puts an end to in-grown hairs by opening pores that may have been congested.

The next thing that should be a part of your men’s skin care routine is a men’s shave cream. A good men’s shave cream will have hydrating micro particles that safeguard the skin against razor burn. They get rid of the possibility of ingrown hairs and nourish the skin with the help of Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Some have Aloe Vera and Eucalyptus to give you that close and comfortable shave, a perfect blend that protects you from cuts and nicks. Other shaving creams rob your skin of its natural oils leaving it dry and sore. For best results you should shave with Fean and Co’s Microbeard directly after a warm shower, or simply use warm water on your face. This will help soften stubble, which makes shaving easier.

Besides the men’s shave cream, another men’s skin care product to consider is lip balm SPF 30. Fean and Company offers the highest quality lip balm available. Supplemented with superior quality antioxidants and skin conditioners, this balm is the perfect solution for soothing dry and chapped lips. Unlike waxy sticks, this type of balm is quick to penetrate and give relief instantly. It provides broad spectrum sun protection with an SPF of 30 and guards against extreme temperature. It is dermatologist tested and free from colorants. It also contains natural mint to help freshen the breath.

Fats, The Good…The Bad and Omega 3.

This has become a hot topic lately. There is so much talk of fats, the healthy fats, the bad fats, the trans fats. I have done some research on fats, trying to keep it simple for us. Here is some important information I have come up with. Omega 3 has become a favorite topic of mine. It has such amazing health improvement qualities. Remember, this is for your information only, and not meant as gospel nor is it meant for diagnostic purposes.

Saturated fats
Saturated fat is the main dietary cause of high blood cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends that you limit your saturated fat intake to 7–10 percent of total calories (or less) each day. If you have coronary heart disease or your LDL cholesterol level is 100 mg/dL or greater, your doctor should recommend the Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) Diet. It recommends 25–35 percent of calories from fat, with less than 7 percent coming from saturated fat. Cholesterol is limited to less than 200 milligrams a day.

Saturated fat is found mostly in foods from animals and some plants.
Foods from animals — These include beef, beef fat, veal, lamb, pork, lard, poultry fat, butter, cream, milk, cheeses and other dairy products made from whole milk. These foods also contain dietary cholesterol.
Foods from plants — These include coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil (often called tropical oils), and cocoa butter.

Hydrogenated fats
During food processing, fats may undergo a chemical process called hydrogenation. This is common in margarine and shortening. These fats also raise blood cholesterol. Use hydrogenated fats only if they contain no more than two grams of saturated fat per tablespoon. The saturated fat content of most margarines and spreads is printed on the package or Nutrition Facts label.

Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats — Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are the two unsaturated fats. They’re found primarily in oils from plants.

Polyunsaturated fats — These include safflower, sesame and sunflower seeds, corn and soybeans, many nuts and seeds, and their oils.

Monounsaturated fats — These include canola, olive and peanut oils, and avocados.

Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats may help lower your blood cholesterol level when you use them in place of saturated fats in your diet. But a moderate intake of all types of fat is best. Use polyunsaturated or monounsaturated oils — and margarines and spreads made from them — in limited amounts. This is recommended in place of using fats with a high saturated fat content, such as butter, lard or hydrogenated shortenings.

Since their discovery in the 1970s, the omega-3 essential fatty acids have generated thousands of studies and clinical trials. Essential to life and good health, they protect against disease and can treat illness.
Dr. Barry Sears is a research scientist and creator of the world famous Zone Diet. His most recent book, The OmegaRx Zone – The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil, is the culmination of 20 years of research on the benefits of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil. In fact, Dr. Sears pioneered the development of pharmaceutical-grade fish oil, a highly refined nutritional supplement rich in DHA and EPA. This work continues his life long dedication to using diet to help people maintain their state of wellness.
Yet few people understand what they are, what they do.

When it comes to heart disease, prevention is your best bet. High blood pressure and hypertension put undue stress on the heart, blood vessels and other organs. A person can get excellent heart health through a variety of ways, especially through a good diet.

Certain foods have been shown to be healthy for the heart. Fish has the proven benefits of omega-3 oil. Omega-3 may lower the risk of abnormal heart rhythms and reduce the cohesion of blood cells, which make them less likely to form clots and block arteries. Omega-3 seems to be particularly beneficial to people already at risk for heart disease and those who have experienced a heart attack.

Olive oil is a healthy choice over other fats such as butter, palm and coconut oils because olive oil is a monounsaturated fat that does not increase levels of cholesterol and triglycerides

The following information on trans fatty acids is Information from the Food and Drug Administration

Q: What are trans fatty acids?

A: Trans fatty acids (or “trans fat”) are fats found in foods such as vegetable shortening, some margarines, crackers, candies, baked goods, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, salad dressings, and many processed foods.

*-additional information from me: Fats that are artificially created through a chemical process of the hydrogenation of oils. This solidifies the oil and limits the body’s ability to regulate cholesterol. These fats are considered to be the most harmful to one’s health. The Federal Drug Administration has mandated that the amount of trans fats be labeled on food products by 2005.

Q: Why should We care about trans fat?

A: It’s important to know about trans fat because there is a direct, proven relationship between diets high in trans fat content and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and, therefore, and increased risk of coronary heart disease – a leading cause of death in the US.

Q: Aren’t all fats bad?

A: No. There are “good” fats and “bad” ones, just like there’s good and bad blood cholesterol. Saturated fats and trans fat have bad effects on cholesterol levels. Polyunsaturated fats and monosaturated fats (such as olive oil, canola oil, soybean oil, and corn oil) have good effects.

Q: How much trans fat is too much?

A: There is research currently under way to determine this. However, it is true and accurate to say that the less saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol consumed the better. Trans fat while pervasive in many of the foods we eat is not “essential” to any healthy diet.

Q: How can consumers know if a product contains trans fat if it’s not identified on the nutrition label?

A: Consumers can know if a food contains trans fat by looking at the ingredient list on the food label. If the ingredient list includes the words “shortening,” “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” or “hydrogenated vegetable oil,” the food contains trans fat. Because ingredients are listed in descending order of predominance, smaller amounts are present when the ingredient is close to the end of the list.

Q: Do restaurants have to list the fat content of their foods?

A: No. But it’s a good tip to always ask which fats are being used to prepare the food you order. (I read in the rumour mill that Restaurants in New York are being asked to voluntarily cut down on their trans fat usage* my own comments)

Q: Why is it important to read labels?

A: Labels provide valuable information. An informed consumer is able to make better, healthier choices.
“The American Heart Association recommends healthy people eat omega-3 fatty acids from fish and plant sources to protect their hearts. Have you heard of this miracle?
OmegaRx Fish Oil, quoted as being close to a Medical Miracle in our Century! Omega 3, The Good Fat, Is on your side, they contribute to your good health. They are also a big part of Dr Barry Sears Zone Diet.
Omega-3 (you may sometimes see it written as n-3 or w-3) is the name given to a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The parent omega-3 – alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) – is described as ‘essential’ as, like vitamins, it must be obtained from diet. It is polyunsaturated and has 18 carbon atoms and 3 double bonds (18:3).

There is no doubt that the omega-3 fatty acids are essential to health.

Omega-3 oils — found in fatty fish, like salmon and tuna — help lower blood pressure, fight heart disea
se and even battle depression.

Omega-3 fatty acids work against depression. Recent studies suggested that consuming omega-3 rich foods such as oily fish can help prevent depression. Omega-3 fatty acids have already been found to offer a myriad benefits to human health. Notably, intake of omega-3 fatty acids or use of oily fish reduces the cardiovascular disease. Omega-3 fatty acids are found richly in oily fish such as salmon fish and tuna. Plant sources such as flaxseed oil and canola oil also offer certain amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids or oil can be purchased as nutrient supplements.

There is no doubt that the omega-3 fatty acids are essential to health.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and drug Administration. This article is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure any disease.

It is very definitely to your advantage to study further the wonderful benefits of Omega3.

Usually, surgery can also be done in conjunction with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This is known as the combined modality treatment.

Since the adoption of a cat is a significant commitment – they live for an average of 15 years – it makes sense to learn more about cat breeds before you buy. Two animals bred extremely popular are the Siamese and Persian, although both have characteristics that make them inappropriate choices in May for some people. Fortunately, there are many other breeds to choose from, many of them less well known. Two of these less recognized breeds actually give hope to people with feline allergies to love because they have a weak layer and allergies are generally well tolerated.

Although it is not a popular as before, Siamese cats have many loyal fans, and for good reason. They are very beautiful and smart, even if modern farming practices have introduced an unhealthy leaning towards a triangular head too. Siamese are very vocal, however, can be a problem for some people, as they may be a little more determined to put their point of view. This is not a cat owner who does not have much time to spend with their pet, as Siamese are very pragmatic people. They love attention and they love the interaction with their owners. They follow them from room to room, and are naturally very curious and mischievous when bored.

Unlike the Siamese, Persian cats are even-tempered. They get along well with other dogs and animals, and are well integrated in several cats. They also tolerate the interests of children. The biggest disadvantage – and also their most striking characteristic – their fur is amazing. A Persian coat requires daily brushing. It mattes easily, and cats must be sedated so that their coats trimmed, keeping them so long coat in good shape should be a priority for owners Persian.

The Siberian cat or croshca is another long-haired cat. It requires less grooming than Persian, and should be brushed only two or three times a week instead of daily. Their hair is too different. Surviving in the cold depths of the Russian winter, the croshca has a waterproof, light layer of oil. Siberian Cats are much affectionate and playful. Like the Siamese, they grow much attached to their owners, so it’s something to keep in mind when choosing a breed. Siberia is an opportunity for those who suffer from cat allergies, their coats are considered hypoallergenic.

Devon Rex cats are another option for people allergic to cats. They have a very thin, soft, curly, which throws a little. The cloak itself is also hypoallergenic. Be warned though – Devon Rex are extremely playful and mischievous. They are also very fond of food, and were known to be very active in research itself when the shade. The Devon Rex is extremely affectionate, and another people-oriented cat who will follow you around and “help” the household.

Cat Breeds all have their own distinctive characteristics. It’s one thing to keep in mind that you will learn about cat breeds before you buy. If you have other animals so you need to know. How much time do you spend with a cat, and your work schedule does not permit? Getting two cats together (if you do not already have one) is never a bad idea because it provides companionship for both. But some cats require more of them than other people do, but they are often at least as much back.

Natural health is timeless. It will never date. It will always be relevant, despite what the media tells you about ‘new’, ‘improved’, ‘scientific’ and all the other gimmicky words that are only employed to impress you enough to buy something.

And, happily, natural health is currently enjoying the comeback it deserves.

To enjoy it, there are at least three really important aspects to address.

The first is your diet. There’s a saying that a quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. Three quarters of what you eat keeps your doctor alive. So if you eat a typical western diet of fast foods, canned drinks and sweets or chocolate, you know you’re heading for disaster.

A natural diet consists of lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, preferably raw. Raw isn’t essential, but will take you that extra mile. As long as at least 30% is raw, you’ll do all right. By raw I mean unpasteurised, unheated in any way, un-radiated, unadulterated. Just fresh produce recently harvested.

So fresh produce should be the bulk of your diet. If you can’t see yourself eating a lot of fresh produce, then I suggest you invest in a food dehydrator. That dries fresh food without losing the nutrients in them. Have you ever tried dried strawberries? They are absolutely delicious.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy making your own un-sundried tomatoes, too.

And try foods you haven’t tried before. My neighbour has never tried avocado and yet they could grow in her back yard. Be adventurous!

The next biggest food group is the nuts, seeds, rice, oats and yoghurt

Then come eggs, bread, wheat, cereal, fish, chicken, chocolate.

Then comes the red meat.

Lastly comes artificial sweeteners. My suggestion is to avoid these altogether.

This diet follows the 80/20 principle. Eat 80% alkalising foods (fruit, veggies, whole foods) and only 20% acid food (meat, sugar, processed foods such as white bread, white pasta, white rice, sweets).

If you maintain this diet, it’s amazing what ailments won’t affect you. Make sure 100% of what you eat goes into keeping you healthy, not just alive. And let the doctors starve!

Another really important aspect of natural health is your health care modality. Obviously that’s going to be a natural one. Which you choose is a very personal matter. But I suggest you remain open and honour your feelings. Your feelings will always take you in the right direction. I have long since learnt the folly of following my head over my feelings. It never works!

With evidence now suggesting a link between taking antibiotics and cancer, your choice of a natural health care system will ensure as healthy a body as you can get. All drugs and medication have a knock-on effect with your health. That’s why it becomes a slippery slope – you suddenly find you’re on a myriad of drugs, with one countering another’s side effects.

The last important point of natural health, is keeping your environment healthy. This will almost guarantee you a healthy body. This means your home really is your castle, your sanctuary. Make sure you create a peaceful and happy home. Work on areas that aren’t. Don’t put up with them. It may be your upbringing that makes you a negative person. It may be you are living with people who don’t support you. List those things that aren’t nurturing you and decide what to do about them.

Time spent with animals is invariably calming, as is time spent in nature. Visit the park regularly. Walk on the beach. Watch a thunderstorm. Make sure you have, even if short, time for yourself every day. And use it to recharge your batteries – whether it’s gardening, sun-bathing or walking your dog. Just make sure it benefits you. That without it, you’re more volatile, have less energy or just don’t cope as well.

Many people think they can’t have time out for themselves as they have too much to do. This is not how it works. The more you stress, the less you accomplish. The less you stress, the more you accomplish and in less time.

Natural health is really all about you being in control of you. You create your life. So why not make it as fun, as joyful as possible? You are important. If you’re joyful, it will rub off on others.

Maybe subscribe to a natural health magazine as that will not only help keep you on track, but will also provide you with useful hints and tips.

And lastly, don’t forget that people will readily mock you, with your new found natural health care, because you’ll be showing them up. Don’t let them dissuade you.

Ovarian cancer is a cancerous growth in the ovary. A cancerous growth means that there is mass of malignant substance growing in the affected area… The fallopian tube is considered to be the common area where ovarian cancer occurs. Next to breast cancer, ovarian cancer is the second leading cause of death among women due to gynecologic infections.

The Silent Killer

In most medical journals and publications, ovarian cancer is known as the silent killer because the symptoms its causes are often inconclusive and may vary from case to case, which causes delay in prognosis wherein the disease is discovered only in the later stages. Despite the variation in symptoms, the following are the most common complaints of those who suffer from ovarian cancer:

 1). Abdominal pain
 2). Back pain
 3). Urinary urgency
 4). Constipation
 5). Tiredness
 6). Pelvic pain
 7)  Vaginal bleeding
 8). Weight loss

Despite the long list of the symptoms manifested by those who suffer from ovarian cancer, it does not totally contribute to an early and accurate detection of the disease because the abovementioned symptoms are also commonly encountered by women suffering from other less serious maladies… Women who suffer from ovarian cancer report that the symptoms they feel are persistent wherein the frequency and the number of symptoms represent a key factor in diagnosing the disease.

Causes of Ovarian Cancer

The cause of the disease is relatively unknown, and is still a question that is the center of researches and studies. What is known though is that the disease commonly develops in middle-aged women. The risk of developing the disease is greater when one has a relative in the first and second degrees with the disease. Women who have never been pregnant are also at risk in developing the disease. The use of contraceptives may diminish the risk of developing the disease along with tubal ligation. Ovarian cancer is classified as secondary cancer, resulting from metastasis from a primary cancer in the body. The primary cancer for women is breast cancer..

Stages of Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer has four stages. The first stage describes the infection as starting with either of the two ovaries, later spreading to both ovaries. Stage two refers to pain in the pelvic area, indicating that the disease is spreading slowly.. Stage three involves microscopic peritoneal implants outside of the pelvis. The last stage involves metastases to the liver.

Treatment of Ovarian Cancer

The most preferred treatment for the disease is surgery.. Surgery is first done to obtain a muscle sample to determine the extent of the infection and the type of infection. Once the process is done, doctors can now decide what method of treatment to use. In treating the disease, chemotherapy is frequently used. Chemotherapy is usually administered after surgery to treat any possible remnant of the disease. Another common treatment is radiation therapy, although this is not recommended in the advanced stages of the disease because it involves exposing the body to high amounts of radiation that are harmful to other parts of the body.

The Diabetes is one of the deadliest diseases in world, one in four people in America have this disease. The diabetes diseases touches everybody, kids, young and old. It is important for everyone to learn “What is Diabetes?”. The real cause behind this diseases is when body is unable to utilize or accumulate glucose. The Glucose is a form of Sugar. The level of glucose when goes high in bloodstream, it causes blood glucose to rise in individuals body. The Diabetes diseases can be categorized into three stages. The three stages of diabetes are “Pre Diabetes”, “Type 1 Diabetes” and “Type 2 Diabetes”. The diabetes has touched every one, from kids, adults to old people.

How does Glucose affects body?

It is a disorder in the body that affects the way body utilizes the food for energy. All food contains sugar, the digested food in body is broken into sugar known as Glucose. The glucose is used to produces energy. The individual glucose keeps circulating in blood and enters into body cells, Once inside the cell the glucose is used as fuel to develop energy. The Insulin is a hormone, which body uses to push Glucose into body cells, if this process stops working then the blood sugar level rises in body.

What is Pre-Diabetes?

– This is first stage to being diagnosed as Diabetes, under “Pre-diabetes” category either there is shortage of insulin required for pushing Glucose into body cells or body has become resistant to insulin. The people who get diagnosed with “Pre-Diabetes” are in risk of getting Diabetes and need precautions and changes in life style to ensure they don’t get diagnosed with diseases. Another pointer is your blood sugar numbers, if your blood sugar readings are above normal and not enough to be classified as diabetes.

The “Pre-Diabetes is also known as “Impaired Fasting Glucose” or “Impaired Glucose Tolerance”. The good news is that early sign gives you God sent opportunity to prevent your condition changing from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes. There is no medication required in “Pre-Diabetes” condition, with control over food habits, changes in lifestyle and an active workout will help you to keep out of diabetes danger.

What is Type 1 Diabetes? – Juvenile-Onset or Insulin-Dependent

In Type 1 Diabetes, a persons body can’t produce any insulin. This type of diabetes usually occurs in early age but can happen any time is life period.

The research is still going on diabetes type one, how it happens. As of now the reasons are that body has little or not enough insulin to use Glucose to make energy.

What is Type 2 Diabetes? – Formerly called adult-onset or non insulin-dependent

In Type 2 Diabetes a persons body has become resistant to insulin. This type of diabetes happens after 35-40 years of age. This form of diabetes is 90 percent common in people.

The reasons for “Type 2 Diabetes” can be genetic reasons, or overweight.

It is a duty of every person to keep his or her health in good condition, by keeping health in check not only we help our families, communities but also contribute to nations health.

Presently, there is no known factor that can be said that is the basic cause or causes of cancer. There are some facts that have long been held about cancer that has been discovered to be false, but new facts about this deadly have equally emerged. The lists below are however, some of the facts that are widely believed to be the true facts about cancer.

1) Heredity is among the factors that influence the occurrences of cancer in human life. However, the hereditary lines in an individual cannot be used to diagnose a cancer victim. Rather, this makes it difficult if not impossible to actually say what will become of a cancer patient. There has been striking similarity in the development of breast cancers in the life of people of the same family, especially with identical twins.

2) Cancer is not contagious. There is no proven fact that shows that one can contact cancer by taking care of another cancer patient.

3) There is no scientifically proven influence that diet has on the development of any type of cancer. There are people that believe that some diets has some contributing factors towards the development of cancer, but since there is no scientifically proved evidence presently either in support of it or not, there is no basis also to say that such belief is wrong.

4) A repeated injury or a long term irritation has the potential to cause cancer.

5) Cancer sometimes behaves like infections, and certain animal experiments of malignant tumors seemed to stimulate cancer formation.

6) Certain hormones in the body, like the estrogenic hormones of the ovary stimulate the growth of cancer in the body. The implication of this is a suggestion that the existence of unbalanced hormone formation or growth in the body can lead to the development of cancer.

These are the basic facts one should know about cancer. However, we need to know that everyday, discoveries are coming out and new facts are equally coming out, so one should not take the above as the only things or the only facts that is worthy to note about cancer. There are other important things that we need to take note of about this deadly disease called cancer. Let’s discuss some of them as they will equally make some meanings in the topic of our discussion today.

A) One of the recognized causes of the cancer of the lower lip is smoking, especially pipe smoking. Also, it can be said authoritatively that one of the major causes of lung cancer is inhaled cigarette smoke. So if we can do away with this, we are doing a whole lot of good for our health.

B) Cancer of the tongue is mostly preceded by either jagged teeth, rough filling of the teeth or even syphilis of the tongue.

C) Cancer of the skin is not common except when this part of the body comes under undue or severe burns on the skin.

D) Cancer of the mouth is more common with those that chew often or hold objects long in their mouth thereby putting the mouth to undue pressure.

E) Excessive exposure to sunlight and wind can lead to skin cancer.

Cancer used to be classified as a disease that is more prevalent to the women folk, due largely the high incidence of breast cancer and other types of cancer that has to do with the sex organ, but there is a reversal of the trend today. More men suffer cancer these days than women. This is due largely to the increase of lung cancer among men. Avoiding all the causes mentioned above will guarantee 100% prevention of cancer, but will greatly reduce it. This is because there are other factors not mentioned here that can equally lead to cancer development in the body. So we should always be on the look out for any symptom that suggests that there is a development of cancer, then go me medical check and if it is discovered to be cancer and treated early, there will be better chance of success than when it has actually grown very large.

Would you like to really know what it really means to be Fit ? Well, I will go straight to the point, and I am sure you will be surprised.

Fitness is a lifestyle. It’s about having a certain mindset, a certain attitude towards yourself.

Yes, it’s about having the body and health you want, but it’s first and foremost loving yourself

deeply from the inside. It’s about knowing who you are really. True fitness is about growing mentally, physically and spiritually. So, Fitness is not something that comes quickly. It’s the result of a complete transformation of your inner being and the sum of daily positive and healthy habits.

The 3 main components of fitness are healthy eating, adapted exercise and fine tuned supplementation : Eating several times a day (5 to 6 times idealy), the right portions (use the size of your fist) and the right nutriments are prerequisites(i.e non-processed food, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, not cutting out carbs, drink enough water, add lots of whole cereals, having proteins and complex carbs at each meal, etc). Always eat high quality and fresh food (forget about prepared or packed meals). Remember that nutrition is 50% of your physical shape.

Another thing you might not know, is that your glycemic level has a direct effect on how your body stores fat : the higher the glycemic level, the more fat you will store and the more you will weaken your metabolism. So keep eating low glycemic foods and lean proteins (egg whites, poultry breast, fish). Try to eat 15% essentials faty acids, 35% proteins and 50% carbs. All this will help train your body to use food and not store fat.

Another thing to know, and this is very important, is to know that we are all unique individuals; what this means, is that not all people have to train the same way. You must train according to your body type. And then combine three different types of trainings according to your body type.

Fitness equals working on the internal aspects and external aspects of yourself. Usually, you only think about the external aspects. But you have first to become the person inside that you desire to reflect on the outside. That’s why the work on the “inside” part is the key to success, and why usually diet plans fail.

Personal growth and attitude are essential to succeed in fitness. The “spiritual” part refers a lot to true happiness,I mean the real feeling of peace and love from the inside out.

To help you on your way, I will give you some tips to start from: first, let’s talk about habits : you will not reach fitness in one day and the new lifestyle it requires will not come in one minute either. You have to install new positive habits each day.You have to be mentally prepared and this takes some time and work!Once you are truly committed to fitness, you will experience three phases you must master :

one is the motivation phase, where you will be super charged with energy and happy to undertake what you decided to. This phase is usually the easiest one;

the second phase is the discipline phase, where your motivation starts to fade away. This is the most critical part. Your body hasn’t yet accepted the new habits, so it tries to keep you away from going forward. In this phase, you must be disciplined and not listen to your negative or restraining feelings. You must hold onto your vision, as you not yet see the results you are waiting for. Just control your mind and keep going, whatever your thoughts are;

the third phase, is the rewarding phase : here you start seeing your first results…and your motivation comes back! It’s a sign your body has accepted your new programming. Your feelings are now positive and you enjoy your new state of being.

It’s all about patience and having strong faith in what and why you undertake what you envision. New habits don’t come quickly, but think about the rewards they bring! One key factor to stay motivated and to manifest what you truly desire is to strongly believe in yourself and your potential. You can make it! Practice daily positive affirmations, imagining yourself in the new situation and enjoying this future state (i.e feeling healthy, full of energy, having a beautiful body, etc.). Put all your energy and intention into your fitness and it will come you back!

I hope you enjoyed to learn a little bit more about real fitness, and hope this will serve you to

become really fit, full of energy, vitality and happiness. Now you should have the clues to

live a balanced life grow physically, mentally and spiritually!

Childhood allergies can be swift and frightening. Imagine a child happily snacking on peanuts one minute, then gasping for breath the next. It’s enough to make any parent afraid.

But allergies have been a part of childhood for hundreds of years. Luckily, most of them go away by the time children reach puberty. In the meantime, you can keep childhood allergies from endangering your child with just a few simple steps.

First, know which allergies are the most common.  If your child has allergies, chances are good that their allergens are airborne (pet hair and dust); contact skin irritants (such as wool); or food (wheat, soy, or apples). Each type of allergy can manifest in a number of different ways. Of childhood food allergies, milk is the most common and peanuts are the most dangerous.

Next, learn about childhood allergy symptoms and how to recognize them. Airborne allergens cause sneezing, coughing, itchy or watery eyes, and a runny nose. Allergens can also cause hives, rashes, or asthma-like breathing problems. Food allergies often cause gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. When allergies are severe, sufferers can have an anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis causes swelling of the air passages. Without medical attention, victims can stop breathing and die.

Milk allergies usually show up during the child’s infancy. This type of food allergy is very common, but not as severe as peanut allergies. Children who are allergic to milk might break out in hives or suffer from colic. Lactose-free formulas are one way to avoid this allergy.

Peanut allergies are very serious; always watch your child carefully when feeding them peanut products for the first time. Children who are sensitive to peanuts can suffer from swelling of the mouth and tongue, hives, and difficulty breathing. They also risk life-threatening anaphylaxis. If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, seek emergency medical help immediately.

The next thing you can do to protect your child from allergies is to talk to their pediatrician about testing and treatment. Allergy tests will reveal the allergens that your child is most susceptible to. Once these substances have been identified, it’s time to decide on a course of treatment.

Mild allergies can be managed simply by avoiding or limiting contact with the allergen. The child’s pediatrician may also recommend nasal sprays or antihistamines to control airborne allergies. Food allergies are isolated by removing and reintroducing certain foods. By keeping track of which foods have been consumed on a given day, parents can figure out which foods their children are allergic to.

Some allergies are more serious. These might require allergy shots or breathing treatments. These types of treatments involve low doses of corticosteroids. Steroids reduce inflammation, a common response to allergens.

Natural allergy treatments are increasing in popularity. Children with breathing problems and coughs due to allergies can benefit from the herbal extract, butterbur. Butterbur promotes healing and respiratory health. Glucosamine, a popular anti-inflammatory, can help with bronchitis symptoms. Antioxidant fruit and vegetable pigments known as flavonoids also support the lungs. Because some asthma sufferers have exhibited a manganese deficiency, it’s thought that magnesium supplements can help control breathing problems.

There are also natural substances that promote healing by helping the body replenish its cells more efficiently. Folic acid is one such supplement. A B-vitamin, folic acid stimulates new cell growth. M.S.M is another natural compound that has been studied as a treatment for seasonal allergies. It works by binding amino acids together and promoting strong connective tissues. This carries vital water and nutrients to cells, and helps toxins pass out of them easily. M.S.M has been found safe for short-term use.

Finally, the enzyme lactase can be taken by children with lactose intolerance. Lactase helps children digest lactose, or milk sugar. Those who suffer from milk allergies rather than a simple intolerance will need to find a suitable alternative such as soy milk. Seek a doctor’s advice before making any dietary changes or giving supplements to your child.

These models dressed in wonderful outfits looked appealing to customers. Especially young people watched these elegant people puff leisurely on a cigarette, and it was hard for them to imagine that this habit could be harmful. After all, these people looked better than the average person on the street.

The facts about smoking did not come out until it was too late for many of these people because the nicotine in the cigarettes they bought was highly addictive. They were hooked to an addictive, destructive habit. Smokers paid the cigarette companies thousands of dollars every year because they bought into the idea that smoking was glamorous. The effects of smoking were not immediately apparent, and they did not want to quit smoking because the facts did not matter. Many of these people did not know the awful facts about smoking cigarettes. Some knew that they should quit smoking because the facts were available to them, but the addiction was too strong for them.

Many Quit smoking When the Facts Emerged

Smokers could feel harmful effects as they smoked, but many tried to quit smoking when the facts became available to the public. Investigators found out that the companies tried to hide the facts and strengthen the nicotine in cigarettes for a tighter grip on customers. Smokers tried to quit smoking when these facts were published in newspapers around the world. Medical researchers conducted studies that showed the harmful effects of smoking on the various organs of the body. Other researchers showed that people in the room with a smoker could be damaged by second hand smoke.

Some smokers quit smoking when learning about the effects on their health, but some quit when they found out about the effects on their loved ones. Mothers who learned about the effects of smoking on their babies were compelled by their maternal instincts to stop. They quit smoking when the facts were published about the birth weight of children born to smokers. Others quit smoking when they learned that second hand smoke could harm all of the people in their household

What you believe about diabetes is probably wrong. As more is discovered about this debilitating disease, you need to know the truth, especially if you or someone you know has diabetes. Here are 9 myths that have no basis in fact.

1.Diabetes is inherited. While heredity plays a part in getting diabetes, the major reasons for getting diabetes is primarily due to a poor lifestyle. Typical diets today consist of highly processed foods which are easy to digest but cause major rises in blood sugar. This taxes the pancreas into over-producing the insulin needed to get glucose into the cells where it can be used for energy. In a similar vein, you cannot get diabetes from someone who has it. It is not viral, like the flu.

2.Sugar causes diabetes. Sugar does raise glucose somewhat but it is the simple carbohydrates in food that is quickly converted into glucose that leads to high sugar spikes, obesity and ultimately diabetes. High fiber food consists of complex carbo9hydrates which take more time to be converted into glucose. This leads to a gradual increase in blood sugar which the pancreas can handle. Diabetics can eat sugar, but sugar alone does not cause diabetes.

3.Insulin helps control blood sugar and cures diabetes. Generally type 1 diabetics need to be on insulin as their pancreas do not produce enough insulin to move glucose out of the bloodstream. Many type 2 diabetics are insulin resistant which simply means that their pancreas are producing enough insulin but the glucose is simply not getting into the cells of the body. Insulin injections help but ultimately the resistant cells require more and more insulin for glucose to enter. Both insulin and glucose build up in the bloodstream and can be fatal. What needs to be addressed is what causes the cells to become resistant in the first place and a lot is due to lifestyle factors. Insulin does not cure diabetes.

4.You can tell you have diabetes when the symptoms start to show. This is true in some cases. But the symptoms do not always show up. The pancreas of type 2 diabetics produce insulin and this can lead to mild symptoms that are easy to overlook. Many people are diabetic but don’t know it until the symptoms become evident.

5.Drinking water helps to flush out excess blood sugar. While we should drink at least 8 glasses of water every day and it does help to flush out many toxins in the body, drinking water alone is not a substitute for the lifestyle change that is needed to help control diabetes. Physical activity, a proper diet, your ingrained habits of smoking and drinking and high stress levels play a more important role as to how your body controls your glucose levels.

6.Oral medications are all you need to control diabetes. They help, but they do not address the causes of the disease, which as already explained is due to an unhealthy lifestyle. Medications are a stop gap measure. They tend to help the diabetic gain weight rather than lose it.

7.Eating carbohydrates should be reduced in the diet. You cannot avoid eating carbohydrates. Carbs are a necessary part of life. It’s the type of food you eat on a regular basis that ultimately leads to diabetes. Consuming too much junk food instead of high fiber food is what leads to problems. Fast food seems like a good way to get quick energy in the fast paced lifestyle we live in today, but it leads to problems if it is done too often.

8.Diabetes cannot be controlled. While there is no cure for the disease, you can live a healthy life by controlling your diet, exercise regularly and cut out the bad habits that lead to the disease. Diabetes is controllable.

9. Diabetics eventually go blind and will lose their feet. If diabetes is not addressed, the complications of blindness, and nerve damage to the feet result leading to amputations. While diabetes is generally believed to lead to the complications of blindness and kidney failure, much of this is due to a lack of essential vitamins and minerals. Diabetics are especially vulnerable to complications since their kidneys flush out essential nutrients as they try to rid the body of excess glucose. Replacing these vitamins and minerals are essential to keeping nerves healthy and functioning. You don’t have to be diabetic to experience the complications. Many people do not get enough essential nutrients from their diets. It’s the reason why disease is so rampant. The body simply has little defense against the pathogens, viruses and diseases that regularly invade the body. 10.There are no natural remedies for diabetes. While there is no cure, there are vitamins, minerals and herbs you can take that can help you control blood sugar. Diabetics should supplement with gymnema sylvestre, bitter melon, fenugreek, gingko biloba and alpha lipoic acid. Helpful minerals are: chromium, vanadium, zinc, magnesium and potassium. The diabetic should supplement with vitamins C and E and B vitamin complex. Besides taking supplements a healthy diet and exercise routine can go a long way to controlling blood sugar.

If you have diabetes or are at risk of getting it, the best thing you can do is make a complete change in your lifestyle and cut out the bad habits that you have formed that put you at risk of diabetes. Work with your doctor and dietitian to avoid the deterioration that narrows the quality of life and leads to early death. Whether you have the disease or not, chances are that any changes you make today will help avoid getting diabetes or control it better.

This is because it can turn out to be fatal if neglected. That is why we should learn more about drugs and medications used to treat high cholesterol.

Our body needs some cholesterol to function. However, too much cholesterol will clog our arteries and cause coronary heart disease. This can in turn lead to a heart attack.

Although our body produces the cholesterol it needs, we also accumulate it through our intake of food products which contains it such as: egg yolks, poultry, butter, cheese and whole milk. There are two types of cholesterol which are: the LDL or low-density lipoprotein, which is the bad cholesterol and HDL or high-density cholesterol, which is the good cholesterol. When our bad cholesterol level is high, we must do everything we can to lower it, including the use of drugs and medications.

Choosing The Right Cholesterol Drug

Many cholesterol drugs are now available on the market. Although some of these drugs can be obtained over the counter, you need to consult your doctor before you purchase and start taking any cholesterol medication.

Some cholesterol drugs may have serious side effects which may do you more harm than good. Your doctor is the only person who can advise you which cholesterol drug is best for you since he is the only one who knows your medical history, your state of health and which cholesterol medicine is suitable for you.

One of the types of drugs your doctor prescribe for cholesterol medication could be the statin drug. This drug is known be effective in reducing cholesterol levels. Your doctor may also prescribe an enzyme supplement with the statin drugs because your body will need more of a certain type of enzyme when taking statin drugs.

Another type of drug your doctor may prescribe is a bile acid sequestrate. It will help control bile acids that are secreted in the liver and gall bladder. It will travel through the intestine and softens fatty material in food, helping it become absorbed in a better way through your system.

Taking The Right Cholesterol Medication

If your doctor has confirmed that you suffer from high cholesterol levels after a series of tests, he may prescribe a cholesterol medication to help you lower your cholesterol levels and achieve a normal and healthier cholesterol level. Your doctor may also suggest that you make some lifestyle changes, altering the way you live your life and modifying the food you eat to help you achieve normal cholesterol levels quickly. If you take the right medication and make the right lifestyle changes as your doctor advises you, you should be able to achieve a healthy cholesterol level within a short period of time.

Stop taking any cholesterol medication if you are concerned about a side effect that occurs after taking it. Always consult your doctor should this occur and inform him of the side effects so that he can advise you if you have to discontinue the medication. Also remember that it is important to follow all the instructions on the medication because improperly taking any medication can cause serious problems for you.

Cholesterol is one of the major substances that cause heart attacks, high blood cholesterol levels, and weight problems. Despite its “bad guy image,” this waxy, fat-like substances made in the body by the person’s own liver serves a number of vital functions unknown to many.

Basically, there are two types of cholesterol: the Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and the High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL). The former refers to the bad type of cholesterol that is known to clog the person’s blood vessels, thus, increasing the risk for a heart attack or a heart disease. Studies show that a diet that is high in saturated fat is a main dietary cause of a raised LDL cholesterol level. The latter, on the other hand, is the good type of cholesterol that helps clear LDL cholesterol out of the blood stream, thus, reducing the risk for any heart illness. Researches have shown that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables along with average levels of omega-3 from fish oil greatly helps raise HDL cholesterol levels.

Although diet is the major reason for having high cholesterol levels, experts agree that factors such as genetics, lack of exercise or regular physical activity, obesity, unhealthy lifestyle such as excessive drinking and smoking, hormones, and varying high and low cholesterol levels can trigger the sudden increase of cholesterol levels in the body.

GETTING STARTED

Indeed, cholesterol is a growing problem in the health of many people in the world. Experts say that people over 20 years of age should be more concerned about their cholesterol levels; thus, they should start doing everything they can to lower LDL cholesterol. Although it is quite hard to stick to the needed requirements and regiments to combat the growing problem, experts say that it can be controlled with the proper diet to lower cholesterol.

Studies show that a good diet to lower cholesterol can reduce a person’s risk for heart diseases while getting rid of bad fats because this diet to emphasizes on eating heart-healthy foods. But, aside from using the proper and proven low cholesterol diets available today, the most important thing is that knowing and taking in the right foods and effective cholesterol formulas to assist in lowering cholesterol levels.

Experts say that a diet to lower cholesterol includes good foods like grains-especially whole grain products and cereals-fish rich in omega3 such as salmon and tune, a variety of fruits and leafy vegetables, nuts, juices, and the like. Here are other effective means of lowering cholesterol level through diet:

1. Make sure that you visit your attending physician first before trying out any low cholesterol diets so he/she could administer the proper examinations and access your general health status.

2. You can lower your cholesterol levels by replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat in meat, chicken, and whole milk products.

3. Refrain from eating refined carbohydrates contained by bakery products, pastas, and sugary or sugar-added foods.

4. When eating out, makes sure that you ask the waiter to make serving substitutions like steamed or boiled food preparations. If possible, also pick lean meat, fish, or skinless chicken that is broiled, baked, grilled, steamed, or poached instead of being fried and ask for lots of vegetable side dishes and fresh fruit desserts.

5. Cutting down on eggs, margarine, or butter out of your daily diet.

6. Use natural-based oils such as vegetable, corn, and olive oils when cooking instead of the usual cooking oil.

7. Load up on a lot of garlic when you’re preparing dishes because it contains substances that help lower HDL cholesterol.

8. Take in high quality daily vitamin mineral supplements like Vitamin E to improve blood circulation, and Vitamin C and vitamin B3 to lower your high cholesterol levels.

The only way that you are going to have skin that is both healthy and younger looking is through the use of 100% pure skin care formulas.  Too many of the companies that make up the cosmetics industry ignore the premise behind holistic skin care, which is that you have to take into account all aspects of what caused your skin to develop problems. You then have to treat each known cause.

A 100% pure skin care skin care formula that is developed using the correct ingredients is capable of reversing every one of the causes of skin aging. The majority of the products that are currently being made contain nothing that will be of any help to you in correcting these problems. They are simply not formulated in a way that will do anything for your skin.

The typical skin care formula ignores the rules of holistic skin care by simply trying to treat one part of the problem. These formulas are usually designed with the intention of treating the loss of connective tissue by providing you with collagen, elastin, or hyaluronic acid. Unless all three tissues are affected at once you are not going to receive maximum results.

The fact is that even if all three of these compounds were present as ingredients they still would not do you any good. Your skin is not able to absorb any of the when they are applied topically because of their density. What you need instead of these products are the 100% pure skin care formulas that contain Cynergy TK and Phytessence Wakame for attaining skin that is wrinkle free.

These two components are weapons against aging in a set of holistic skin care formulas that will give you the results that you are after. Cynergy TK will affect your skin by promoting a dramatic increase in the production of your collagen and elastin. Phytessence Wakame treats your low levels of hyaluronic acid by attacking the enzyme that causes this tissue to break down.

In order to cure the other cause of why your skin ages like it does, these 100% pure skin care formulas provide you with all of the antioxidant power that you will need. You will be able to effectively eliminate the free radicals in your skin that have been produced by the UV radiation from the sun. Cynergy TK in fact is the most potent antioxidant being used in any skin care formula.

The introduction of Cynergy TK, and the antioxidant providing plant based oils and waxes that these products contain will allow you to heal the molecular damage that the free radicals have done. This has the effect of reducing lines and wrinkles on your skin, and along with the increase in connective tissue will have you looking years younger. These are holistic skin care formulas at their best.

Give the 100% pure skin care formulas I have described a try, and see what it is like to use an effective formula for the first time.

When should I undergo a cholesterol test? What would the results say about my health? How many tests are there and which will give me the best results?

Unlike any other health tests, cholesterol testing does not diagnose disease. Instead, it reveals the risks of developing heart disease. Cholesterol testing is considered necessary in preventive health care for individuals over 20 years of age. The test should be repeated once every five years for healthy individuals.

Cholesterol testing, along with HDL, LDL and triglyceride testing is called the lipoprotein profile.

Cholesterol testing is done several times a year for individuals who are on a prescribed diet and for those who are taking cholesterol lowering medications.

Usually blood samples are drawn from the arm. Sometimes blood samples are taken from the fingertip. The samples are analyzed by a cholesterol testing device. Cholesterol tests are used to monitor the progress in lowering the cholesterol level.

Test results are grouped in three types:

* Desirable – the cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL below is regarded to be desirable because it has a low risk of heart disease.

* Borderline high – a total cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL to 240 mg/dL is at fair risk of having heart disease. Your doctor may decide to give you have a lipid profile in order to determine which cholesterol level is high.
* High Risk – a 240 mg/dL cholesterol level is considered to be at high risk of heart disease. Expect a lipid profiling if your cholesterol level is this high. It is more likely that you will be given a cholesterol lowering medication along with a low cholesterol diet.

Cholesterol tests are usually given when the individual is healthy because the blood cholesterol level of an individual who has an acute illness, (after a heart attack or after surgery or accident) is likely to be low. Individuals are advised to wait at least six weeks after any illness before taking cholesterol tests. Pregnant women are also advised to wait six weeks before having their cholesterol level measured.

A Brief Explanation of Cholesterol Ratios:

Cholesterol ratios consist of total cholesterol. Total cholesterol includes low level lipoprotein cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol), triglycerides and high density lipoprotein cholesterol level (HDL cholesterol).

Cholesterol is measured by milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood (mg/dL). Usually, only the total cholesterol amount is given when a person is tested for cholesterol. Sometimes you are given the HDL cholesterol and the total cholesterol results.

The desirable total cholesterol level is 200mg/dL and the beneficial amount of HDL is more than 40mg/dL.

There are two important cholesterol ratios. These they are LDL/HDL cholesterol ratios and total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratios.

In the latter cholesterol ratios, your cholesterol result is given by the total cholesterol divided by the HDL cholesterol. According to the American Heart Association, the desirable amount should be below 5:1 with the optimal amount of 3.5:1 or 3.5 to 1.

The LDL/HDL is done by dividing LDL cholesterol by the HDL cholesterol. The desirable amount in this ratio should be 3.5 below. The American Heart Association recommended that physicians must use complete numbers for total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol in determining the appropriate treatment.

A normal cholesterol level as suggested by the National Institute of Health:
* total cholesterol – 200mg/dL
* LDL – 100mg/dL
* HDL (man) – 40mg/dL above
* HDL (woman) – 50mg/dL above
* Triglycerides – 150mg/dL

It is important to remember to fast the night before, prior to taking a lipid profile test (a test that profiles the HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and total cholesterol) the next day.

Weight loss has become an everyday topic across all ages in the American population today. You will agree with me that the population has quickly realized the extent to which obesity has become a serious health problem that needs immediate attention. The sad reality of the situation is the fact that it is not getting any better. More and more children and young adults are becoming over weight at an early age now than it was ten year ago. This scenario is accelerated by the fact that majority of the affected population give up the battle against weight control and give in to obesity.

I get asked almost everyday by different people who are looking for ways to loss weight for an effective weight loss method. I am sure this question sounds familiar to most people in our society today – or at least most of us can relate to it in one way or the other. I wish there was one simple and clear answer to this question, but the reality is there isn’t. This does not mean there are no solutions to over weight problem. To better understand the effectiveness of weight loss method, we need to consider the following facts:

Overweight is long term: It is a fact that weight does not built up over night, it takes months if not years. The rate at which people gain extra weight however varies with individuals based on different factors that include, but not limited to: metabolism, physical activities, calories consumed, genes and lifestyle among others. Among these factors, food is the chief source of extra body weight gain. Considering that an average adult requires an average of 2000 calories daily, majority of the people go beyond. The body only utilizes what it needs for energy production to sustain the body systems and the surplus is converted to fats and stored mainly around the belly area. The only way to get rid of this fat would be through work. Whatever method of weight loss you choose should be one that enables you to burn more calories than you consume. It is also important to remember that a healthy weight loss is a slow process that demands some sacrifices.

The rate of losing weight is relative to individual’s body weight: When all factors are kept constant, the rate at which an individual losses weight depend the individual’s extra body weight. An individual with a larger extra body weight tends to loss more than an individual with a smaller extra weight. For instance, when a group of overweight individuals are put through a similar training program for some weeks, it is possible to witness as high as a 50 pound weight loss from one and as low as 2 pounds from another. This picture often misleads many people especially when the extra or targeted weight is not given. It is therefore more meaningful to calculate the percentage of an individual’s weight loss relative to the overall extra body weight. Losing more weight doesn’t not always imply that an individual is better than the one who loses less.

Achieving a healthy body weight does not always mean losing weight. Most weight loss methods, for example recreational sports, facilitate muscle growth in the place of fat. This means that even though you are burning fat by going to the gym, running or jogging, the scale may still be reading the same weight or in some cases even more. In this situation, physical fitness rather than the scale reading should be used to judge one’s health status. Remember muscle weigh more than fat. Strive for a healthy status rather than a mere drop in pounds.

Sustainable body weight is achieved through gradual healthy weight loss methods: It is only natural for humans to want to loss all the extra weight as quickly as possible and forget about it. There are consequently hundreds if not thousands of weight loss pills readily available everywhere for this quick fix. The troubles with most of them are the site effects. Contrary to quick fix, weight loss must be both achievable and sustainable. Sustainable healthy weight require work and patience, there is no short cut!

Hints: An effective weight loss method must:

Have no negative effects on the body

Become part of one’s lifestyle

Fun and entertaining

Inexpensive and easy to perform

If you can’t think of any healthy weight loss method to use, here are some great options to choose from:

Running, Jogging, Walking, Swimming, Weight lifting, Synchronized exercises, hiking, skiing, biking, rock climbing, beach volley ball, tennis and Kayaking among others.

Be wise, choose what works for you and stick to it, make it part of your lifestyle, embrace it and you won’t have to worry about the scale.

Tea tree oil is extracted from a tree known as Melaleuca. The scientific name for this essential oil is Melaleuca Alternifolia. It is an antifungal agent mostly used for various types of skin disorders. It is also added as an ingredient to beauty products, the most popular of which is face wash.

Tea tree oil acne treatment is most suitable for the cure of moderate acne. It is applied as a topical or rub-on treatment. It is recommended to use tea tree oil only externally. Although it can prove to be effective for a lot of people out there, some people show sensitivity to it.

Tea tree oil acne treatment is used to get rid of many types of bacteria including staphyloccus, eschrichia coli and shigella sonnei. Staphyloccus is responsible for causing furuncles which are very similar to pimples as they are also painful nodules that appear on the surface of skin.

This essential oil is most commonly known as a treatment for various viral and bacterial infections. It is also added to mouthwashes and other products for the treatment of mouth ulcers and other conditions. Similarly, some people use it for the treatment of dandruff, lice, yeast infection, eczema, oil spots and nail infections.

It has been found that tea tree oil acne treatment does not guarantee complete acne cure. However, it does lessen acne breakouts and cure them temporarily as do many other topical acne treatments. It is recommended to use a good quality facial wash that contains tea tree oil as a main ingredient for proper cleansing of skin and to control pimples and prevent other skin disorders.

Some people are allergic to tea tree oil especially if they have sensitive skin. You should immediately discontinue its use if you experience redness of skin, irritation or rash. There are many other acne treatments that can be used instead of tea tree oil if it hasn’t proven to be useful for you.

Like all complicated matters there are certain misunderstandings regarding Diabetes.

Today I want to dispel some myths regarding diabetes.

Here is a list of the questions that I will be discussing:
Can get diabetes from someone else?
Eating too much sugar causes diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is mild diabetes
People with diabetes eventually go blind
It’s not safe to drive if you have diabetes
People with diabetes can’t play sport
People with diabetes are more likely to get colds and other illnesses
People with diabetes can’t eat sweets or chocolate
People with diabetes shouldn’t eat bananas or grapes
People with diabetes should eat special diabetic foods

Now for some serious myth bashing…

Can get diabetes from someone else?
Although we don’t know exactly why some people get diabetes, we know that diabetes is not contagious – You cannot get it from others. There is a chance that a person whose parents or brothers and sisters have diabetes might get diabetes, particularly Type 2 diabetes. But lifestyle factors also play a part.

Eating too much sugar causes diabetes
Eating sugar does not cause diabetes. Diabetes is caused by a combination of inherited and lifestyle factors. However, eating a diet high in fat and sugar can cause you to become overweight. Being overweight increases your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, so if you have a history of diabetes in your family, a healthy diet and regular exercise are recommended to control your weight.

Type 2 diabetes is mild diabetes
There is no such thing as mild or borderline diabetes. All diabetes is equally serious, and if not properly controlled can lead to serious complications.

People with diabetes eventually go blind
Although diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in people of working age, research has proved you can reduce your chances of developing diabetes complications – such as damage to your eyes – if you:
• Control your blood pressure and glucose levels
• Keep active
• Maintain your ideal body weight
• Give up smoking

It’s not safe to drive if you have diabetes
Providing you are responsible and have good control of your diabetes, research shows that people with diabetes are no less safe on the roads than anyone else. Nevertheless, the myth that people with diabetes are not safe persists

People with diabetes can’t play sport
Pakistan’s famous all-rounder Wasim Akram has diabetes; many other people with diabetes take part in active sports. People with diabetes are encouraged to exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Keeping active can help avoid complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease. There may be some considerations to take into account with your diabetes before taking up a new exercise regime – talk to your doctor for more information.

People with diabetes are more likely to get colds and other illnesses
No. You are no more likely to get a cold or another illness if you’ve got diabetes. However, people with diabetes are advised to get flu vaccinations. This is because any infection interferes with your blood glucose control, putting you at risk of high blood glucose levels and, for those with Type 1 diabetes, an increased risk of ketoacidosis.

People with diabetes can’t eat sweets or chocolate
Sweets and chocolate can be eaten by people with diabetes just like the rest of us, if eaten as part of a healthy diet. Remember that confectionery foods tend to be higher in fat and calories too so for this reason they should be limited especially if you’re trying to lose weight.

People with diabetes shouldn’t eat bananas or grapes
All fruit and vegetables are extremely good for you. Eating more can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, some cancers and some gut problems. You should aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. This also helps to improve the overall balance of the diet. Eating a variety of different fruit and vegetables ensure you get the maximum benefit.

People with diabetes should eat special diabetic foods
Diabetic versions of foods offer no special benefit. They still raise blood glucose levels, contain just as much fat and calories, are usually more expensive and can also have a laxative effect. The healthy diet for people with diabetes is the same as that recommended for everyone – low in fat, salt and sugar, with meals including starchy foods like bread and pasta and plenty of fruit and vegetables.

To begin with, throughout the world, cholesterol levels (measured in the blood) vary widely. Generally, people who live in countries where blood cholesterol levels are lower, such as Japan, have lower rates of heart disease.

Countries with very high cholesterol levels, such as Finland, have very high rates of coronary heart disease. However, some populations with similar total cholesterol levels have very different heart disease rates, suggesting that other factors also influence risk for coronary heart disease. High cholesterol is more common in men younger than 55 years and in women older than 55 years. The risk for high cholesterol is known to increases with age.

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat like substance that your body needs to function normally. Cholesterol is naturally present in cell walls or membranes everywhere in the body, including the brain, nerves, muscles, skin, liver, intestines, and heart.

Your body uses cholesterol to produce many hormones, vitamin D, and the bile acids that help to digest fat. It takes only a small amount of cholesterol in the blood to meet these needs. If you have too much cholesterol in your bloodstream, the excess may be deposited in arteries, including the coronary (heart) arteries, where it contributes to the narrowing and blockages that cause the signs and symptoms of heart disease.

Too many Americans have high levels of total cholesterol and LDL (the bad cholesterol). A diet high in saturated fat (a type of fat found mostly in foods that come from animals and certain oils) raises LDL levels more than anything else in your diet. You also eat cholesterol in your diet, although the effect of saturated fat in the diet is greater than the effect of dietary cholesterol.

Trans-fatty acids (seen in processed foods and many “fast foods”) can also increase LDL levels. Dietary cholesterol is found only in foods from animal products. Genetic factors combined with eating too much saturated fat and cholesterol are the main reasons for high levels of cholesterol that lead to heart attacks. Reducing the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol you eat is an important step in reducing your blood cholesterol levels.

The government has reset the standard for LDL levels so that more Americans are included in the risk group. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is caused by cholesterol and fat being deposited in the walls of the arteries that supply nutrients and oxygen to your heart. Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, which are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries.

Fixed narrowing that is often calcified (hardened) usually cause angina (chest pain). Less severe narrowing may contain unstable blockages called atherosclerotic or fatty plaque. Unstable atherosclerotic plaque can rupture, resulting in clot formation, no blood flow, and a heart attack.

If enough oxygen-carrying blood is blocked from reaching your heart, you may experience a type of chest pain called angina. If the blood supply to a portion of the heart is completely cut off by total blockage of a coronary artery, the result is a heart attack. This is usually due to a sudden closure of the artery from a blood clot forming on top of unstable plaque.

A simple blood test checks for high cholesterol. Simply knowing your total cholesterol level is not enough. A complete lipid profile measures your LDL (low-density lipoprotein [the bad cholesterol]), total cholesterol, HDL (high-density lipoprotein [the good cholesterol]), and triglycerides another fatty substance in the blood. Government guidelines say healthy adults should have this analysis every 5 years.

A desirable total cholesterol level is 200 mg/dL or lower. A desirable LDL is 100 mg/dL (130-159 is borderline high; 160 is high; 190 is very high). HDL, the “good cholesterol,” should be around 40 mg/dL or greater. With HDL, the higher the number, the better, and 60 mg/dL is protective against heart disease.

Recent studies have shown that lowering cholesterol in people without heart disease greatly reduces their risk for developing heart disease in the first place. This is true for those with high cholesterol levels and for those with average cholesterol levels.

The Framingham Heart Study established that high blood cholesterol is a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). Results of the Framingham study showed that the higher your cholesterol level, the greater your risk. Several studies have confirmed a direct link between high blood cholesterol and CHD. The Lipid Research Clinics-Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (LRC-CPPT) first showed that lowering total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels significantly reduces coronary heart disease.

A series of more recent trials of cholesterol-lowering using statin drugs have conclusively demonstrated that lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol reduces your chance of having a heart attack, needing bypass surgery or angioplasty, and dying of CHD-related causes.

In 1994, the Scandinavian Simvastatin Survival Study (4S) was the first study to show that people who took the cholesterol-lowering class of drugs called statins (in this case, simvastatin) reduced their risk for major CHD events (such as a heart attack) by 34%, CHD deaths by 42%, and all deaths by 30% in people with known coronary heart disease and high blood cholesterol levels, compared with people who were given a placebo (a dummy pill that looks exactly like the medication being tested).

This has been called “secondary prevention,” or prevention of a second heart attack, because the study involved people with known heart disease, many of whom had already had at least one heart attack.

The Heart Protection Study, published in 2002, examined men and women of all ages at high risk for heart disease irrespective of their cholesterol levels. Simvastatin treatment reduced CHD events by 24%. This study has caused some experts to suggest that everyone at high risk for CHD would benefit from statin therapy, regardless of their blood cholesterol levels.

Finally, The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III), carried out from 1988-1991, discovered that 26% of American adults had high blood cholesterol concentrations, and 49% had desirable values.

Fact #1: Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in cell membranes in the body.

Essentially, cholesterol is like a lipid, which is broadly defined as any fat-soluble, naturally-occurring molecule, such as fats and oils. Cholesterol is naturally made in the body via the liver, however can be created in small amounts through your diet. Cholesterol plays an important role in the body as a building block for cell walls and bile acids and it is needed to produce hormones and vitamin D. A low level of cholesterol in the blood is natural and healthy. Cholesterol only becomes a problem when there is more cholesterol in the blood than the body needs. It can cause the build up of fatty deposits in the arteries, reducing blood flow in arteries and may subsequently become a problem for a heart health.

Fact #2: There are Good and Bad Types of Cholesterol

There are indeed two different types of cholesterol in the blood, which are carried in special transport packages, called: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol), takes cholesterol from the liver to the body tissues. If there is a high level of bad (LDL) cholesterol in the blood it can build up in the walls of the blood vessels and cause them to narrow High-density lipoprotein (HDL cholesterol), takes cholesterol away from the arteries to the liver to be eliminated and a high level of good (HDL) cholesterol is thought to be heart healthy Your total cholesterol is made up from both LDL and HDL cholesterol. Hence, the total cholesterol level recommended for heart health for Australians adult is 5.5 mmol/L or lower. To help keep your heart healthy and lead a healthy lifestyle, it is important to keep your bad (LDL) cholesterol low and your good (HDL) cholesterol high.

Fact #3: Eating Too Much Saturated Fats Causes High Cholesterol Levels

Although there are many factors which may cause your cholesterol levels to exceed the target level of 5.5 mmol/L, the most common dietary cause is eating too much fat and in particular too much saturated fat. High intakes of saturated fat can raise bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and in effect cause heart health risks. Usually, saturated fats can be found in fatty meat and milk products, butter, cheese, chips, and other snacks. We can reduce the intake of saturated fat by consuming fewer foods rich in saturated fat, such as butter, fatty meats and full fat dairy; and by preferring foods low in saturated fats instead such as margarine spreads, oily fish, walnuts and pumpkin seed.

Fact #4: Physical Exercise Will Lower Cholesterol Levels

An increase in body weight usually increases blood cholesterol, blood pressure and generally the risk of negative effects on heart health. The body shape is also important: an “apple” body shape carries a higher risk than a “pear” body shape. Besides keeping the body weight in balance, physical activity can also lower blood pressure and increase overall health and wellbeing. Things you can change to lower cholesterol level:

Your weight and shape (an increase in weight tends to increase cholesterol levels)

Whether you are physically active (it lowers LDL cholesterol)

Whether you are under stress

Whether you eat a healthy diet (especially saturated and trans fats increase cholesterol levels)

How much alcohol you drink (a small consumption increases the good HDL cholesterol, however more than two standard drinks per day will increase your overall cholesterol)

Whether you smoke Things you can’t change:

your gender (men tend to have higher cholesterol levels than women, until menopause when men and women are at equal risk)

your age (cholesterol levels increase with age)

your ethnicity (some ethnic groups have a higher risk than others)

your family history (if your family is affected by cholesterol then you are likely to be affected by it).

Fact #5: Lowering Cholesterol through Healthy Food sources

Your food choices can affect the cholesterol levels, especially if you diet consist predominately of saturated fats. Butter and dairy blends (made from a blend of butter and plant oils) are high in saturated fat, which is the type of fat that negatively influences cholesterol levels. Limiting these foods in your diet will help lower your blood cholesterol levels. A healthier choice in your dietary intake, as well as a healthy, active lifestyle will keep your cholesterol within the recommended levels. A sensible healthy meal should include the following:

Lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs or vegetarian meat alternative such as legumes, beans, lentils or nuts, and

Pasta, rice, noodles, couscous, potato or bread, and

Plenty of vegetables and salad As a general guide, aim for half your dinner plate to be vegetables, a quarter of the plate to be either rice, pasta, noodles, potato or bread and the other quarter of the plate lean meat or vegetarian meat alternative. Have a side salad. Experiment with lower fat cooking methods such as grilling, poaching, steaming or using the microwave.

According to various statistics, each year in the U.S. over 100,000 people opt for weight loss surgery. Obesity surgery (known as bariatric surgery) has been proved to be very effective for people with life-threatening weight-related conditions, but it is regarded as a last resort when all other methods of controlling weight, including prescription drugs, have failed. Here’s a closer look at this method of weight loss.

Obesity surgery is available privately on referral, and only for patients who have been receiving treatment from a doctor in regards to their obesity. To be considered for an operation, patients must have a BMI of 40 or more, or 35 or more if they have medical conditions that would improve with weight loss. They must also be fit enough to have a general anesthetic and be psychologically prepared for the life-changing implications of the operation.

Types of surgical procedure

The following types of surgical procedure are available; they may be carried out as ‘open’ or keyhole surgery. Gastric banding, or lap bands, involve the placement of a constricting band around the top of the stomach to restrict food intake, creating a small pouch and a narrow passage into the remainder of the stomach. An inflatable balloon is usually incorporated, which can be adjusted if necessary after the operation.

Gastroplasty involves partitioning the stomach into two parts, horizontally or vertically, creating a small segment of the stomach that fills rapidly with just a few tablespoons of food and then empties slowly through the digestive system.

Bypass operations involve both restriction of the stomach and bypassing some of the digestive system, so that fewer calories (and nutrients) are absorbed from food. There are two options; gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion, which is more extensive. Obesity surgery patients need special dietary advice before and after the operation and will be monitored for life, to ensure they do not become deficient in nutrients and that there are no complications from the surgery.

Research shows that bariatric surgery can be very effective and a life-saver for people who urgently need to lose significant amounts of weight for their health. But, along with this are many risks that you must consider. Any procedure under general anesthetic will carry risks. And the dramatic changes in diet and lifestyle that are needed after surgery are permanent. This is an option to be considered very carefully and then only with specialist support and advice. It is truly a method of last resort for losing weight.
